  1. Fallout 4 — Boston Makes Me Feel Good

I have absolutely zero enthusiasm for this despite loving Fallout 3. I don't even think I'm going to buy it... Not sure whether it's open world fatigue or the fact I disliked Skyrim so much. Probably a mixture of the two, but it's really not like me to be so indifferent towards a game where I loved the prequel. Normally I'd be watching trailers and shit, but none of them can even hold my attention.
  2. Baby Got Backstory - A trope creation thread

If Twig's latest example doesn't count, then Quiet shouldn't count either, or the other way around. There is nothing in the MGS lore explaining why she's hot, only explaining why she wears a skimpy outfit. Also, concerning Inara in Firefly, does that really count? Her backstory is that she is a prostitute. It's not really a stretch to assume an upper class escort/companion should be attractive and are selected for training upon that criteria. It's like saying Morena Baccarin is attractive because she's an actress, therefore is part of the BGB trope. To clarify, I think Inara is the inverse of BSB. She's a companion because she's attractive, not attractive because she's a companion.
  3. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate

    G-rank baby!
  4. I Had A Random Thought...

I dislike subscriptions. I love the idea, and there are many things I'd like to subscribe to, or would if there was the option, but I lost track of that stuff so fast. I had to force myself to only ever have one or two at a time. Currently it's Netflix and PS+. I'm not dropping netflix any time soon, and PS+ is fantastic value for me. Any more and I'd get my monthly pay cheque and wonder where it's all gone.
  5. Idle Food - Cooking!

I tend to cut chicken breasts lengthwise or I wrap them up in clingfilm and pound them thin (less often with chicken, but I always do this with pork).
  6. I Had A Random Thought...

I dislike ads. I skip them all. I don't begrudge anyone using ads, but I don't want to listen to them, especially as even if I liked the idea of a service, I wouldn't be able to use them anyway since I live in europe and mainly listen to US casts. You know what I hate more than ads in podcasts? When the first 5-10 minutes are spent talking about where you can find the people from the podcast on social media, where you can support them and how you can contact them. That shit is the worst. I understand why they do it, but it doesn't need to take so long. Just put it in the podcast description and say look there. Put it on the website and say that one address. The two podcasts I listen to that are the most egregious when it comes to that are Bonfireside Chat and Mark Bell's Powercast. I wouldn't pay $1 for a podcast. Mostly out of the perceived lack of convenience, but also because they vary so wildly in quality between each cast.
  7. Super Mario Maker

I made my first level! It's pretty bad, but I'm proud of it! 0EE6-000-00C9-B077
  8. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

It's one of the best games I've ever played. You should play it.
  9. Life

American work culture is horrible (it's not necessarily capitalism it's American Capitalism). Pretty sure I've bitched about it before, mainly because I want to work in the US, but I don't want deal with working for Americans. Listening to how they do it in Sweeden makes me wish everywhere was like that. Hearing the Paradox CEO and COO talk about how "happy employees work harder" and that 6 weeks holiday are just normal in Sweeden. Everyone should listen to the interview Austin Walker from Giant Bomb did with them, it's really good. Also, did you know they're considering moving to a 4 day work week? I want to live in Sweeden. Actually, I want the US to be more like Sweeden.
  10. Black Lives Matter

That's really gross. Getting police involved with students seems so counter productive unless of course there's a real crime being committed. Being disruptive in class is a thing every kid does at one point or another.
  11. Black Lives Matter

I guess what gets to me the most is why there was a police officer called in for what seems to be a pretty minor display of teenage rebellion. It's not like she was running around the class. Is that common in US schools? The only time police were ever at my school was when someone was caught with a shit load of drugs.
  12. Idle Workouts

That seems like a good idea. Just turn up to a meet and ask about. Pretty sure there's one relatively soon. There's a lot of internet training going on now, not sure if I'd be suited to that. All I really need is someone to tell me what to do and have someone else to answer to other than myself. Oh, and I injured my back. The worst part is, it wasn't from lifting. I had to carry a really heavy backpack for a whole day travelling, and it completely screwed up my middle back. Not being able to exercise is horrible, I can't do anything, I can't lift, I can't run...I can swim but I'm not really willing to pay an extra £5 over my gym membership to go to a pool. It's crazy stressing me out! Exercise is the only thing that really de-stresses me. I like the idea of a home gym, but there's something about going to a building thats not my home for exercise. It puts me in the mindset, while at home I tend to slack off.
  13. Black Lives Matter

What are the options that police are trained for (or not as the case may be) to deal with those who resist arrest? I know nothing about police or how they work, but from a lay perspective, all they can do is tell someone to do something, and if they don't, use force to make them. Obviously there are different levels of force available - you don't need to shoot someone or throw someone across a room to get them to comply.
  14. The Great Co-op Thread

Well, when I say it's ugly, it's ugly compared to Destiny (which is really a fantastic looking game). I really enjoyed it while I played, but I hit that point where I had to repeat similar missions over and over, while progression felt like it was miles away. I'm sure playing with someone else would mitigate that (as it would with Destiny too). It was really pushing me to pay, but I didn't want to. It's a fun game though. I have a couple of good memories of 4 people severely under geared wiping out a room of enemies, only just staying alive for each wave.
  15. The Great Co-op Thread

I played quite a bit of it on PS4 (Warframe) but after a while I got bored. It's super good for a free game, but it's like Destiny, with worse mechanics, uglier graphics, zero story and much slower progression. So basically everything everyone hates about Destiny turned up to the max.
  16. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate

Congrats! I should figure out this slack thingy.
  17. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

I don't think you need to. I'm not meaning to dispute it's more complex, just my point is that it's streamlined in such a way I find it easier to play than the older titles.
  18. Black Lives Matter

Ok, I am not really in the know about the topic, I've only really heard it in response to the recent shootings. If the movement under that name has incorporated more then that's definitely a good thing.
  19. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

Well yes...but 3 alert statues to 4 hardly seems like a huge step up to require the exaggeration.
  20. Life

It's the beginning of the semester here in Manchester, and I've been tasked with looking after an undergrad. When will my boss learn? I can't teach. I can show them where stuff is, but I can't explain things to people in more than one way. Either they understand my first attempt to explain, or I can't help, I don't have different ways to understand things stored in my head. I have my way, because that's all I've ever needed. I also have no patience at all, especially when it's so easy for me to forget that undergrads don't know the basics of the thing I've been immersed in for 3 years. I find it much easier to explain to lay people what I do, than to someone who I feel should know the basics. Although I did see something quite amusing. After telling her about "n" numbers and "n=7" her report has "we used end is 7." It took me a few minutes to figure out what she was trying to say. Do they not teach undergrads about experimental repeats any more?!
  21. Black Lives Matter

So I saw a poster for a meeting on "Black Lives Matter" here in the UK. While racism is still a problem here, I don't see how a load of recent shootings in the US have anything to do with racism here. Is it just undergrads being undergrads and assuming the whole world revolves around twitter, or is it a valid point in the UK too?
  22. No Man's Sky

They seem to have gone from "there's multiplayer, but you'll never encounter anyone" to "there's no multiplayer" back to "there's multiplayer but you'll never encounter anyone" again.
  23. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

I don't think it's anything to do with Nintendo not knowing how to introduce people to new games, it's more that people expect all games to be the same. It's a problem with much of AAA gaming becoming relatively homogenous, all offering the same things in pretty much the same way. Once someone does something, everyone else has to do it too. That, plus Nintendo does as Nintendo wants. They don't seem to care about copying other people, they just do what they think makes enjoyable games. Is you friend enjoy any indie games? If she does, I don't see why she would have a problem with Zelda. I'd guess she only plays the big stuff, because indies and Nintendo have a lot in common at the moment.
  24. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

You're probably right there, but I disagree about there being 20 different alert levels. There's what, 4? Unaware, on guard, shooting at you, searching for you.
  25. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

Funny you say simplistic. I found them incredibly complicated. I played the whole of MGS1 and 2 without really knowing how to do anything. 3 I got the hang of, although the CQC stuff was still pretty complex. Don't remember 4. V seems to be pretty basic in terms of actual game play, it's just done perfectly. I dunno, who cares? It's crazy fun. I've not enjoyed an open world game so much in a long time.
