  1. Modest Tech: The NX Generation (Nintendo Switch)

I really hope it's not real, I loathe touch screen games. Lack of physical feedback destroys every mobile game for me, unless it's incredibly simple like 3s.
  2. Idle Cook Club - Veggie Feeds-me: My Body Is Ready

My suggestion is Shepard's Pie. Here's a simple recipe for anyone who's not made it before: http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/9644/nofuss-shepherds-pie Good luck with an incredibly British meal!
  3. I guess my fears have mostly been confirmed. It seems like it's a decent game, I just don't really have time or other people to play with. I was interested but I should probably pass. Not having people to play with is the main reason I quit Destiny. I should clarify, that I really want to get the Division, I just don't think I'll get my money's worth from it.
  4. Odd question: is this game good? Or is it 3rd person Destiny?
  5. Automation: Where did all the jobs go?!

We have a vending machine at work with a laser sensor so it never doesn't give you your mars bar. It occasionally poops out double your input if you press return cash without buying something.
  6. What's for Breakfast?

Today I had a large Galaxy chocolate bar, a pack of beef jerky and an energy drink. Wasn't a good day.
  7. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

I never made it past the tutorial when I first tried, mainly because as left hander, using the wiimote was horrible. I've not played a Zelda game in forever, and apparently it's exactly what I wanted to play after hours of roguelikes and souls games. I've only played an hour, but even the boring tutorial has been pretty fun. From what I remember of the original reception, was that the dungeons were actually the only good thing about the game. I'm very excited to finally get to them.
  8. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

So I just bought Twilight Princess. It's now downloading while I'm at work. I'm excited to get home and play! I love Nintendo Directs, they're so endearing, especially as Miyamoto introduces himself simply as a video game developer at Nintendo.
  9. Other podcasts

Annnnnd I'm looking for a new history podcast. The History of Britain got bogged down in names of successive kings and the boring things they did or didn't do. Can only listen to so many episodes talking about Kings with basically the same name before the whole thing just becomes a grey sludge in my memory and I've learned nothing. It started out well though! Any suggestions? I'm pretty sure I prefer ancient history, we don't know enough to get bogged down in too much detail.
  10. Automation: Where did all the jobs go?!

It's not about the interaction though...It's about how I've changed my behaviour in a way that limits the number of people required to work there.
  11. Automation: Where did all the jobs go?!

I feel like you're missing my point. It's not about enjoyable socialising, it's about how I'm already skipping over people to use machines.
  12. Automation: Where did all the jobs go?!

Taxes aren't high enough to warrant that. And I'd also argue that you do indeed see businesses basing their headquarters in countries that have favourable tax rates. I'm not saying that every middle class person would leave, I'm talking about the mega rich (the 1%). The ones who would actually be able to fund this sort of venture.
  13. Automation: Where did all the jobs go?!

I never said we live in such a place, only that my values are as such. You're entirely right. I guess the obvious issue with this sort of thing, is that it pretty much has to be implemented globally, or anyone earning enough to be taxed enough would simply leave the country and move to somewhere that they don't have to pay ludicrous amounts of tax.
  14. Life

Would it be incredibly nosey to ask you where?
  15. Automation: Where did all the jobs go?!

Mincome grosses me out which I know is backwards thinking. It just goes against my core values of a simplistic meritocracy. It doesn't have to though, the key is finding something else to reward people with. The work I do is poorly paid but I'm rewarded in publications and having my opinion valued. That stuff makes me far more enthusiastic to work than an increased pay packet would. So it's not outlandish to assume there could be a separate reward for working. Although let's not beat around the bush, mincome is just communism under another name. Maybe automation is what was missing the first time around. You know what's scary about automation? I already prefer dealing with machines than people. So do many others. I was in the supermarket and found myself walking past empty cashiers to the self serve. So were others. The only time I actually go to a person in the supermarket is if the queue is shorter than the self serve.
  16. Life

Eot, that actually happens fairly frequently. Not constantly, but it's not a completely crazy thing to do. Your supervisor will be pissed, mainly because if you had told them you were waiting for another offer, they could have held the place for you, but now they have to start the search all over again. However, I'm sure they'll understand, as I said, it's not like it's never happened before. My only advice in terms of moving institutions is that the reputation of the institution is less important for a PhD than it is for an undergrad, at least within academia. The outputs you generate and the people you work with are much higher up the list. If the lab you would like to move to hasn't got much published work by PhD students, then it may actually be a worse move for your career. If it's in the US, those high ranking institutions are brutal when it comes to authorship. As in, it's based around putting multiple people on a project and letting them compete for first author. Which may be effective for the supervisor, but it's a disgusting work environment. My old supervisors both had brief stints in the US as postdocs, and both of them returned to the UK immediately after citing the horrendous conditions as the reason. I'm not saying don't go for the one you're most interested in, I'm just saying think about everything before deciding. No one really cares if you get your PhD from Pen State but didn't publish. People will be impressed if you publish more than once in a moderately ranked university.
  17. Pretty much better AI, so they use decent tactics, enemies with EVs put in places that make sense so they hit appropriately hard and balanced teams for each trainer. Late game trainers, especially the Elite 4 should have 6 pokémon each. Other than that, I have no idea. I don't need it to be punishingly difficult, just enough to keep me on my toes, as now it's tedious.
  18. Nuclear Throne: Oh! I accidentally ate my gun.

Yup! It's crazy how melee weapons go from being practically useless early game, to being top tier late game with all the junk flying around.
  19. Nuclear Throne: Oh! I accidentally ate my gun.

Ayyyyy, I made it to the throne with Eyes and beat it first time!! That attack it opens with is cheap as shit. Also, melee weapons are the best. I severely under appreciated them, but with long arms they are just godly.
  20. A difficulty setting would allow for it to be accessible for everyone, whilst still providing challenge. I do enjoy the catching, searching and levelling of pokémon, I just hate the battling. If trainers were challenging, I feel like I'd have way more fun. The battles are mindnumpingly easy, which is fine if you want that, but I know I'm not the only one who wants a challenge out of the game. Hence difficulty settings.
  21. Yeah...the breeding isn't fun so fuck online play. I guess my issue is...why not both? Why can't there be a hard mode so the badges and the Elite 4 are actually a challenge? Maybe as a kid it didn't bother me that they were easy, I was winning, I liked winning. Now every battle seems like a chore I have to go through to do the next thing, then I get it done and the reward is generally more battles. I don't want to have to resort to multiplayer for a challenge, I barely play multiplayer games any more, they seem like something for people with time and what I love about portables, is that I can just slam shut that clamshell if my bus arrives, or the food I have in the oven is done. You can't do that with online play. Also I'd have to grind through the boring ass single player before I get to the boring ass breeding, before I can have a challenge. Hard mode would bring me back to Pokémon. I was severely underwhelmed by X&Y.
  22. As a huge pokémon fan, I'm completely apathetic towards this. So tired of how pathetically easy the games have become (or are, I dunno if I was just a dumb kid, but water > fire > grass was never hard to grasp even as an 8 year old). Half of the issue is that the AI is awful. Growl, growl, growl, growl all day long. I'd be so happy if Sun and Moon were a Conquest/Birthright situation as Fire Emblem (seriously, when the fuck are those games coming out in the EU?) Where one game is basically hard mode and the other is waifu mode.
  23. Please tip your postmate

I worked as a waiter in the UK for about 4 years. I was paid cash in hand, and tips went to the owner who would (yes, would) distribute them as an Xmas bonus. The idea was that it stopped staff fighting over the regulars who tip a lot, and made it fair so the people behind the scenes also got some of that money. I made £50 a night. Sometimes that was significantly above minimum wage, sometimes it was below. Tips didn't affect how well I did my job. Being professional, and wanting to keep the job affected how I did my job.
  24. Please tip your postmate

I was going to write about why tipping sucks but I'm sure everyone already knows. Really informative post synth, I'm not entirely sure how it works in the UK. I believe many of these people are on zero hour contracts, which means they get paid minimum wage but have no security. There's been lots of complaints about these sorts of contracts, but most people love them thanks to the flexibility. It's mainly people in your situation - they're students and want money when they can. The problem is when people have them and need to support a family, which is impossible and when government statistics include zero hour contracts in unemployment rates.
