  1. That's good 'cos I don't like my steam name. Obscure references to Peter Kay sitcoms always seem like such a good idea at the time...
  2. My lovely, lovely girlfriend gifted this to me on Steam today, so I'll be diving into it later...and completely ignoring her. Either she's shot herself in the foot or she's having an affair. Would very much be up for some co-op if anyone is interested - my Steam ID is lesalanos
  3. Idle Explorers (Spelunky, um, thumbs)

Cheers to hammerpants, elmuerte and spork armada for providing me with some quality daily entertainment
  4. Idle Explorers (Spelunky, um, thumbs)

I beat Hell for the first time today, and on the daily too! FUCKING YASSSSSSSS 102 hours and 501 attempts. So happy right now, my heart is beating like mad. Think I'll shoot for the speedrun achievement next.
  5. Idle Explorers (Spelunky, um, thumbs)

Today's seed, eh? Fucking hell, edge of my seat. Succumbed in the temple with no bombs, no ropes, no spike shoes, and no shotgun. More near misses than I could count. Wish I'd recorded it!
  6. Dark Souls(Demon's Souls successor)

I still thought it was infinite. Might as well be infinite, though: 7 cycles is too many when they are no fun at all.
  7. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

Listened to this yesterday for the first time in beards, and it's still great. Just really daft, cheesy and fun.
  8. Dark Souls(Demon's Souls successor)

I love Blighttown, always having to watch your step and watch your back. Can get a bit annoying if you're being repeatedly toxified and running out of blooming moss, though it tends to force an element of haste in an area that calls for care. Devious level design. Those mosquitos down in the swamp, though, grrrr.
  9. Waaah! That all sounds awful. Your joke was so-bad-it's-good, though, which takes the edge off that bad news.
  10. Dark Souls(Demon's Souls successor)

Standard longsword is a really versatile weapon. Couple it with a shield that blocks a high percentage of physical damage and you'll be good for most of the game, providing you remember to upgrade. Good luck!
  11. So, how's the inventory management in DaS2? I thought it was pretty shit in DaS. I want more options for sorting items automatically, and (ideally) a way to see what an item is before picking it up. Any of that in there?
  12. Spelunky!

I've been reading Dune and now I understand why you only find the Crysknife inside the Worm
  13. Idle Explorers (Spelunky, um, thumbs)

Fucked up today in the black market, but defo feeling what SecretAsianMan is saying about the ranking being based solely on cash held when you die/win. I think it's very impressive the way hammerpants ghosts most of the early levels and ekes out every bit of gold he can, but I don't have the patience to play that way
  14. Idle Explorers (Spelunky, um, thumbs)

I missed the eye too; didn't get a sniff of the key or the chest all the way through the level. Still, I eventually stumbled across the entrance to the black market by chance (I didn't think it showed up at all if you didn't have the eye), and went all the way to the temple with the hedjet. Eventually panicked with the scepter and managed to vaporise my brains. A very disappointing end to a promising run.
  15. Spelunky!

That's dead impressive for a four year old. I always think of Spelunky as a game that requires serious dexterity, but I'm probably just a bit crap at it
  16. Idle Explorers (Spelunky, um, thumbs)

Pretty tough seed today, I thought. Went into the black market with only two bombs to my name, so I quickly nabbed a shotgun and shot my way through. Very few bombs to be had there, so by the time I'd reached the end of the ice-caves I was all out (although doing quite well for money). Anubis proved tricky in the temple, but i eventually baited a sliding block into crushing him, which also crushed my chances at getting into the city of gold. Still, I persevered, dodging traps like my life depended on it, 'cos it did, and reached Olmec. Finally the game started paying out some bombs and made victory over him a cakewalk. Wish I'd recorded it!
  17. Idle Explorers (Spelunky, um, thumbs)

I finished Olmec off the slow way, but I did have three spare bombs to make it a little easier. Went into hell with 4 bombs, no shotgun (Olmec squished) and cack in my pants. However, the first level was pretty easy and the shopkeeper was already dead. Ultimately made it to the level before Yama, the furthest I've ever been in Spelunky. Gutted that I was so close when I died.
  18. The Big LucasArts Playthrough

It's not like you ever have to sprint away from any boulders or anything like that. Just gotta be patient with it. Also, if you struggle with any doors, try walking through them backwards.
  19. Just came on here to gripe about the pre-order weapons (I had assumed they would be exclusive) but if I can get them in-game then that's fine. If people want to use them and make the early game easier for themselves, then okay. It's not something I'd do, but whatever. I just hope they're not so powerful that invading phantoms will abuse them.
  20. Who are Your Favorite Video Game Reviewers/Critics?

Yeah, they were brill. And his Sick Notes column always cracked me up. Didn't he somehow land Half-Life to review, way back when? Edit: Mind, I suppose nobody had any clue how important/great it would turn out to be
  21. Who are Your Favorite Video Game Reviewers/Critics?

Cara Ellison, Leigh Alexander, Adam Smith at RPS (my fave from that team), Richard Cobbett who writes loads about adventure games and is always entertaining, and lastly Stewart Campbell who used to write an awful lot about arcade games and iOS gaming.
  22. Recently completed video games

I didn't finish Dust because I found some areas just dragged way too much because of their size and lack of variation. Also, you've probably heard this elsewhere, but it really is quite mind-numbingly easy on the regular difficulty, so knock it up a notch (bam)
  23. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

Mainly archers giving me grief, because by the time Alistair has closed in they've already zeroed in on me. possibly I'm drawing too much aggro myself by launching powerful spells right off the bat? I'll defo go for AoE spells now, that sounds like a good plan. I might also lower the difficulty just for a bit, until I've got some powerful magics under my belt. I'll probably have my mage, Alistair, Morrigan and a rogue - sound okay?
  24. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

Best boss fight in the game, that one. I reckon with that sweet halbert you'll dispose of them pretty sharpish
