  1. General Video Game Deals Thread

I can get Deadly Premonition for a piffling £2...but, is it even worth that? I've heard a few good opinions but a lot of other negative ones.
  2. Alien Isolation - The nightmare of Milky Joe

I'll give normal a bit more of a shot, as it's early days for me and I haven't seen any enemies yet. However, if I find I'm getting killed a lot, I'll defo switch to easy. Cheers for the tip!
  3. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

Oh, man. I loved the design of EDI. Initially - my kneejerk reaction - was to be dismayed that she was so overtly sexualised, but then I thought it was a neat throwback to the (dated, retro, sexist) idea of "fembots". If her character was more of a femme fatale, I think it would have bothered me, but she's really dorky, earnest and awkward; the analytical computer crammed into a voluptuous female form. Some of the more humorous conversations in the game stemmed from that.
  4. Spelunky!

Haha, love the cover! I've not heard of this series before but I'm really intrigued. Will have to pick up the one about Earthbound, for sure.
  5. Spelunky!

Killed Yama with the Crysknife today! Another self-set goal achieved. Got some decent action shots, too.
  6. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

I can scarcely believe I'm saying this, but I'm quitting Mass Effect 3. It's just too fucking long, and I think that, with the reapers on my doorstep, there's just not much that can be done to surprise me anymore. The combat is good - really good - but it's not enough on its own to sustain the whole experience. I don't really care for the new characters. EDI is good fun, and I used her for most missions, but the others can go hang. Hell, I played for what must've been close to thirty hours and have seen a grand total of three new characters. Garrus is still Garrus, Liara is still boring me to death, and Kaidan? I should've put a bullet in his head when I had the chance (I didn't realise I actually did have the chance, and missed it, until I read about it on the wiki later on) Anyway, the straw that broke the camel's back was trying to paint a target on a reaper, in what was presumably supposed to be a climactic moment (if the rousing music was anything to go by) but which basically meant strafing left and right and trying not to wiggle the mouse about too much. This came just 20 minutes after the incredibly tedious Geth VI section, where the versatile and kinetic combat system is reduced to hunting for static, glowing blocks in a featureless maze of non-glowing blocks, so I just quit in bewilderment at the whole thing. I don't suppose I'll ever get to see what the furore was about the ending, but judging from the rest of what I played, I likely wouldn't have given a toss

You're in for a real treat with Super Castlevania IV. It's tricky, sure, but never too hard imo, and has one of the best soundtracks ever, to boot. A real feast for the senses. I don't know if you like "AVGN" (that handle put me off his videos for ages until I actually watched a few for myself) but he recently did a two parter about it, where he played with a friend. Not spitting fury over it because he loves it, and it's a bit of a nostalgia trip. Worth a look.
  8. Alien Isolation - The nightmare of Milky Joe

Started playing this tonight, and haven't met anything that wanted to kill me yet, thank god. The tension is there, though. In spades! Some early thoughts. *Is there a bit of lag in the menu when using a pad? *The music is great. The sound design, in general, is leaps and bounds above just about anything I've played before. *It's beautiful. It looks just like the film OMGOMGOMG Hugely excited to play more tomorrow night. One problem I think I might have with this game, and which I've had with other horror games in the past, is that getting killed immediately dissolves all of that built up tension. I hope I'm...not shit at avoiding the alien, or I think I'll get frustrated re-doing sections.
  9. Hatred: The Most Despicable Game of All Time?

They fucking ripped off the "Doom" font, those fuckers. I hate them so much.
  10. Original Songs in Games

Can't think of anything, but wow, that Kentucky Route Zero song blew my mind. The Gravity Rush track is awesome - so effervescent and really makes me want to try the game. And I don't think I'll ever tire of the theme for Impact, from Mystical Ninja. Love that game to bits.
  11. Our favourite moments of play

I've got two, and one of them is a bit blue. I'll start with that one. Remember demo discs? I used to get PC Zone every month, back when I was pretty young (about 10 or 11) and I played all the demos. All games were fascinating to me back then, whereas now I'll glance at a screenshot, "meh, looks like a JRPG" and shrug my shoulders. One such game was Little Big Adventure 2, a quirky, non-threatening adventure game by French developers Adeline. Incidentally, I still play this game almost every year, usually wrapped in a duvet, smeared head to toe in nostalgia. Anyway. In the demo, you could run around the first island and chat to people, but if you went into any interior spaces you were transported to a bastard hard cave full of bats and skeletons. So, I jogged around the island a lot, watching the rabibunny melbas go about their business, and chewing the cud with a friendly cow who introduced herself as Rosa. I also played with the behaviour settings, and noticed that the one of the forward dodge moves looked a lot like Twinsen was salaciously thrusting his hips. My mind took that ball, and ran with it. Hip thrusting at the kid on top of the pharmacy was fun for a bit, but I struck gold when I tried it on the rear end of my friend in the pasture, Rosa. Not only did it look hilariously inappropriate, but I realised I'd hit the bovine bonanza when Rosa started paying off with extra lives! That was a good feeling. My first easter egg, and I'd done a lot for Quetch and cow relations, which would surely help in the trials yet to come. My other fave memory was when I finished an arcade game with a single 20p piece. Me and my family had been on holiday to the same caravan park in Wales for a few successive years, and pretty much every evening I would be given about £2 and pointed in the direction of the arcade. One game there looked like a Disney cartoon, and it was called The Cowboys of Moo-Mesa. (I've looked it up since and it really was a children's cartoon) It played a bit like Streets of Rage, except your cowboy hero (what is it with all the cows?) always had a gun, and could get powerups. Also you could do a dash attack which inflicted heavy damage and sometimes stunned enemies. I played it a lot, and without really realising it I got really good at it. Like, back at the tent I could visualise each stage back to front, and where enemies would come from and when, and the powerups, and everything. There was a difficult bit where you had to track-and-field your way up a waterfall as debris fell down it, threatening to knock you back. Most people who I saw playing would lose all of their lives there, but I could do it easily. One day, my rapid button hammering attracted the attention of some kids, a little younger than myself, who wandered over to watch, presumably being all out of cash themselves. I was so focused that I barely noticed them, and just carried on, cruising through to the last stage, and putting down the final boss without a misstep. When I finally returned to the real world, I noticed how many kids were around me, all beaming up at me and saying "wow that was amazing!". Graciously, I handed over the controls, and stepped back to watch.
  12. I played SM64 to death as a kid, and loved it. It was a challenge in parts, but I seldom felt too frustrated. Even as a kid, though, the camera always used to bother me (much more so than the cam in Banjo, for example), and I say this as someone who likes to control the camera a lot. Lakitu would often swivel as I was running up to a tricky jump, or swoop dramatically to the side when I had taken pains to line it up just so. If you got too close to a wall, it was hell, and I ground my teeth to powder after hearing that incredibly abrasive 'denied' sound when the camera wouldn't move any more. I tried replaying it recently on an emulator but my patience wore thin about half-way through. For the record, and to finish on a positive note, SM64 is wonderful and I have many happy memories
  13. Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

Get back in there and raise some lumps, boy! (I think that's where I quit)
  14. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

Haha! Cutest video ever confirms that duck's can indeed jump, and that's just as well 'cos that kerb was a bit higher than a normal jump
  15. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

You want me to duck jump? But...duck's can't jump ...(can they?!)
  16. Recently completed video games

I really liked Shattered Memories. The chase bits with the monsters were rubbish, though
  17. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

Has anybody played The Vanishing of Ethan Carter yet?
  18. Recently completed video games

    The fucking cat's whiskers, mate
  19. Recently completed video games

Playing ME3 now and the combat, as previously stated, is the dog's bollocks. Story hasn't picked up yet as i'm just a few hours in.
  20. Recently completed video games

Finished Mass Effect t'other day for the 2nd or possibly 3rd time. It's good, don't get me wrong, but it's not as good as ME2, and I can't fathom why just so many people think it's actually better. Playing ME3 now, but only about an hour into that.
  21. Hammerwatch - A thumb whacking good time

Obligatory "Garlic bread?!" Man, that got old fast.
  22. Hammerwatch - A thumb whacking good time

Yeah, that'd be good. Send me a friend request on Steam if you like: lesalanos (It's a weird name...obscure reference to a Peter Kay sitcom)
  23. Non-video games

I played Hero Quest for the first time with friends a few weeks ago. Me and my GF were complete newbies, and weren't really sure what to expect, but we had a blast. Our GM was very forgiving and so we stomped through the dungeon. He was also quite critical of the more proscriptive nature of Hero Quest as opposed to D&D which he said was a lot more flexible. On that note, we're now trying to organise a game of D&D. I've signed up to Roll20, 'cos I'd like to learn a bit more about it. Does anybody here use Roll20 and want to help me get into a campaign? I am a total newbie.
  24. Hammerwatch - A thumb whacking good time

Started playing this today. Dead eager to get into the game so just hammering 'A'...end result is that I'm a paladin. He's fun, though! Got a lil' shield for blocking ranged attacks from the front, and a short range dash which can cut through enemies. I've just beaten the first boss, on normal, and am in pretty good shape, with 10 lives, and having purchased a lot of upgrades. From some preview vids I saw ages ago, I thought it looked a bit slow and boring, a bit tedious. But, it isn't. It's fast paced and the combo meter I can build up encourages me to take a risk and charge into a pack to keep it going and cause lots of damage (also, the fact you don't get XP for killing enemies means you really want to dispatch them efficiently and kill the spawners) My thumb ached a bit from constantly pressing the attack button though. The auto-attack is slow as shit: I reckon I can do 3 times the number of hits if I hammer attack. Some things I don't like: I wish buttons/switches etc stood out a bit more against the backdrop. And, I'd like it if some more of the puzzles were riddles instead of just humping around looking for buttons to push. But, so far, it's great!
  25. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

You can't bind the mousewheel in Quake Live, so, not a great first impression. How long has this game been out? Embarassing.
