The newest generations of projectors are MUCH brighter than older projectors. Ours is totally usable/fine with a reading lamp going in the evening. We do have heavy curtains for the windows during the day though, that's pretty much required. Light control is the biggest issue in thinking about the room though. You have to take some measurements of your room as well if you start looking at particular projectors. Most projectors have some zoom capability, but the size of screen they can put out from any particular distance will be limited. So from 10 foot from the screen, a projector might be able to put out a 70-100 inch image. The zoom range on projectors varies a ton, so if you only have a limited number of options on where you could possibly have a projector, you'll want to make sure you can get one that will actually throw the size of screen you want from that distance.

  3. This is without a doubt the best gaming forum/community I've ever been around. The only thing that was close has been the Joystiq Podcast Appreciation Group on Facebook back when it was still active.
  4. That was a great 'cast! The pain in Nick's voice as he describes his excitement and desire is just incredible. I fucking torture myself before treating myself with any new toy that is primarily for me, so I sympathize. I have no problems splurging on my wife or kid, but I am wracked by guilt treating myself. Not to beat a dead horse dog, but apparently airport security = great show topic while Dirk Gently = Off the table. Grumblegrumblegrumble. Speaking of dogs, I am right with Chris on this. Fuck dogs in video games. They are almost never fun or interesting to fight, just annoying as piss. I've been playing Transistor the last few days, and the robot dogs are the most annoying enemies so far. They are the only enemy you can't outrun or dodge while waiting on your turn cooldown. They have an obnoxious amount of hitpoints for their size. Now they can cloak and you can't attack them while they are cloaked. Each enemy type feels like it really fulfills a particular role in that game, and the dog's role is Annoying Asshole. This show really felt like it was full of a delightful level of immaturity. Sonic slash fiction. Danielle's casual, "I have a short wiener...story." I feel a bit like a broken record, but seriously, Danielle is awesome and I'm glad she's officially a host. I'm not sure I remembered to congratulate her last week. So congrats!

I've become a proponent of just buying a projector (I put one in last year), but it's not a perfect fit for every home/room. If you usually have your room dark while gaming and watching stuff, it's great though. And the prices and quality have both improved a bunch in the last few years, to the point where a quality entry level 80"-100" projector and screen is comparable to a good 40"-50" TV. If you think you're interested, I can give some pointers.
  6. Chris: "We don't have to talk about Dirk Gently." Me: NOOOOOOOOOO! Seriously, I would have loved to hear you all talk about Dirk Gently.

Florida is the Florida of Florida. Edited to add: Florida is kind of a weird word to say a bunch of times in a row out load.
  8. Idle Digging - Shovel Knight

Well that kind of bums me out that so many are known already.
  9. Idle Digging - Shovel Knight

That's awesome that there are a few hundred players out there that will have one secret that only they know, and they'll have to decide whether they want to share it or not. Like, that's maybe the best Kickstarter reward I've seen.

I made an account to check it out. I dig the world and writing. It's got a very similar vibe to it that the board game Arkham Horror has, with a mix of noir and the strange. Not sure I can handle the action point system though. I get that it's a good monetization model for a world like this, but I really just want to be able to click around for an hour or so if I want to. It will definitely get me to check out their new game when it's finished though.

  12. I shouldn't be , but I kind of am. Hopefully it's painfully obvious you don't want to click those at work, unless you have brony coworkers.
  13. Just sell them in the market. You don't have to interact with anyone and you'll get $0.07 to $0.30 per card depending on what game it is from.
  14. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

We're about halfway through Radman, and it continues to be really good. One thing about it is the difficulty can swing pretty wildly, which I think overall is a good thing. Someone skilled at platformers can still feel like they are getting a good challenge, while someone less skilled can still contribute in meaningful ways. I'd suggest not doing they time trials in co-op (they start unlocking sometime after you've cleared the first world and are entirely optional). I actually think co-op makes quite a few of them more difficult, as they require a perfect run to complete in the best time and other people will just end up making the entire thing frustrating for everyone. At least that's my experience.

Yeah, their reaction on Twitter has been rolling around in the back of my head. I'm hesitant to really give them any credit for it, because it is literally the least amount of work they could do to show that they are decent human beings. It's like giving credit to men for not raping women. Oh good, you took 5 seconds to tweet about people being shitty. Here's your golf clap. Yes, it's good that they did it, but that doesn't mean that it has real value as an action. I'd be a lot more impressed if they actually talked about this openly (which they might yet do, the criticism is really recent). I'm catching up on the last few weeks of On The Media, and just hit a segment where they are discussing the cancellation of Tell Me More, the "blackest show on NPR" (their words, not mine). They bring on one of the vocal critics of the decision, an NPR executive, and then spend awhile talking about what this means for minority voices at NPR, the reasons behind the decision, and what is going to happen going forward. I'm always impressed when a media outlet is willing to cover their own controversy by giving a voice and space to their critics to come on and speak on their platform about what has been happening. I don't honestly listen/read GB enough to know if this is a likely outcome, but it's certainly one that I would like to see.
  16. Gods Will Be Watching

Holy shit that's brutal for a pixel art game. It looks like they've extended the model of the game jam experiment to a whole bunch of different scenarios?
  17. Feminism

That piece is both hilarious and horrifying, as it's a bit close to reality at times.
  18. Transistor

Do powers/options you skip over show back up as an option later (either at a later level up, or through some other mechanism)? Or are they gone for that playthrough?

I had never heard of Fallen London until checking out Sunless See when I saw the banner for it on Steam. Sounds freaking fascinating. How long does going through FL take? How badly grindy is it?

That's a great story Jay, hope it all keeps working out now that things are looking up!
  21. Areal (aka S.T.A.L.K.E.R. / Metro 3.0)

I think their Risks and Challenges section really tells you all you need to know about the likelihood of this succeeding.
  22. Movie/TV recommendations

I've watched a few, I find the "bad" movies are still much more enjoyable with RT than "good" movies. Reign of Fire is probably my favorite I've watched.
  23. Transistor

Started playing this tonight. It's just fucking brilliant, like so many good ideas and good execution in every facet of the game. I'm particularly impressed by how you need to use different combinations of functions in order to unlock all the background story/lore. It naturally nudges players towards experimentation, which is something games with interesting systems often fail to do. Got a bit past the first boss before I quit. Can't wait to get deeper into it.
  24. General Video Game Deals Thread

I used to do that, but my main "gaming" machine also doubles as my wife's desktop, and she's a little compulsive about arranging the desktop, so I'm not allowed to that. My machine has a bunch of business, database and server stuff on it, so it's not really appropriate for regular gaming (though I will use it for some co-op games). On deal news, it's Canada Day! Buy Canadian games! That list is actually pretty impressive though, a lot of good stuff has come out of our friends in the North.
