  1. Downwell! Gun Boots! Treasure Collecting! Falling!

After playing for ages on Levitate style I just tried switching back to Usual. How do people combo with this? I feel like I'm wearing lead boots. (Wait I probably am.)
  2. Insurgency

Mostly yeah, I occasionally play with friends but I've been playing with randoms while podcasting or catching up on Giant Bomb lately. I muted in-game voice so I don't really know if they expect it? But I barely ever see the voice notifications pop up, so I doubt it. It's not the most the tactical thing in the world, honestly.
  3. Social Justice

I don't see what's bizarre about it. Suicide is often a cry for help or attention which stems from existing unresolved issues - the internet is just another avenue for that. I don't think that necessarily makes her less sane, it just means her judgment is impaired, which... if you're at the point where you're attempting suicide, that's kind of a given.
  4. Insurgency

This game just got a pretty big update, most notably adding a great new cooperative mode (I basically only play it coop now), and tweaking the AI to be a lot less braindead. The new coop mode is great because it doesn't funnel you from point to point like the old ones, you're free to capture any point from the start and the AI crop up everywhere. It feels like a more frantic version of the old Rainbow Six terrorist hunts. I'm having a lot of fun with it.
  5. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

New Cloudkicker y'all! This one's goooood, sounds so smooth. http://cloudkickermusic.com/
  6. Best Robinsonade games?

LOL, I saw Boundless and thought it was a straight rip-off of Oort. Looks great, though! I've been keeping my eye on that because the graphical style is so freaking cool, and the idea of linking Minecraft-y worlds through portals is really neat. Having that many portals in one place must really make your processor work overtime though, right?
  7. Downwell! Gun Boots! Treasure Collecting! Falling!

How the hell do you walljump consistently? I'm using the dpad on my 360 controller (it's a limited edition doohickey with an improved dpad, not the piece of shit the normal ones come with), is it easier on keyboard? The timing on switching directions against the wall and hitting jump seems really precise.
  8. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

I just had a thought about this earlier. I started a game of Dragon Age: Inquisition and it occurred to me that, since voice acting has become almost ubiquitous in RPGs (even MMOs, what the hey???), naming your character is a completely pointless act. It's kind of sad that no other character will ever utter your character's name, even if they become friendly or intimate with you. You're always just a title or a pre-defined surname to them, which just seems formal and kind of distant... I also had another thought, which is: why do Bioware characters still look so fucking awkward.
  9. Downwell! Gun Boots! Treasure Collecting! Falling!

This game is pretty swell! I got to world 3 just before and it took my eyes a good minute to register that they'd added another colour to the palette (I wasn't imagining that, right?). Then a thing ate me. +1 for shotgun being the best.
  10. Video Game Recommendations

First thing that comes to mind is this browser game - http://adarkroom.doublespeakgames.com/ Should be playable on anything and it suits your purposes since the entire mechanic of it is that it slowly introduces you to its mechanics. The game itself grows and gains features over time, starting dead simple and slowly increasing in complexity (I guess it's a bit like that clicker game everyone went crazy over but I never played that).
  11. Downwell! Gun Boots! Treasure Collecting! Falling!

Damn, this looks really cool. Wish I'd managed to hang onto $3 this week.
  12. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate

Just gonna throw this out there, might help forming parties if anyone else wants to follow suit - if you see me online in Slack (see thread for info), feel free to @ me if you want an extra for hunting since that'll send me a notification. Better that way than checking this thread hours too late when I could've helped.
  13. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

I saw some tooltip that having two troublemakers in a squad makes them focus on eachother and basically cancels them out? Not really sure how this works in practice. Anyway I stopped caring about them since all my troublemakers are now high rank, and my medical team is good enough to get crew back out of the sickbay pretty quickly. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
  14. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

The extra soldiers you get from GZ are a nice early boost, but they kind of suck later on. I had to give the Eye and the Finger the Boot pretty early on. I agree that having more helicopter-based stuff was a huge missed opportunity. Actually I'm surprised they didn't just straight up let you order the chopper around while you're in it. Get it to circle around a base while you mow everything down with the minigun, yeeeeeeeee. Has anyone actually killed a single thing with the minigun? Only things I've ever managed to hit are sheep (sorry sheep).
  15. Let's discuss what a video game is

I thought the point of the Mountain being released as a "game" was significant because it challenges people's notion of what a game is. In that sense, isn't there value to it being labelled a game whether it actually is or not? (Also, how do you define "actually" oh no help I'm falling into an endless void of subjectivity aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa Edit: I never post in this thread because I never finish games, which is often a result of the fact that I primarily play games which have no linearly defined end point. Where's my discussion about what comprises "complete" and how traditional definitions aren't broad enough to fit modern video games, huh? Huh?? (Alright now I'm just being contrarian for funs)
  16. anime

Just watched that first ep on a whim, I like it. I have no clue where it's going but I'm intrigued as hell. The ED is freakin cool, too.
  17. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate

I'll be up for some hunts if I'm around. Haven't played in a while so I need to get back into the swing of things. Struggling to find another set of armor I like in G rank since I made the Bnahabra set. I downloaded Athena's ASS to try and piece together my own sets, even imported all my charms, but most jumbled sets look so bad, I can't bring myself to do it. :/
  18. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

Alright, the explanation for Quiet's outfit was bollocks, but I thought the explanation for...
  19. anime

I was actually holding out hope for one of two alternate endings: 1) There was no seventh, or at least not knowingly. The Demon King tricked a seventh person into thinking they were a brave in order to pit the braves against one another, but none of them actually had knowledge of it. 2) There were two "sevenths." The real sixth was kidnapped prior to the events and held prisoner somewhere so the tattoo wouldn't reveal they were missing. This actually made me suspect that it could've been Maura and Chamot working together for a bit, but like I said that kind of became too obvious. Full disclosure: I have a habit of ruining shows for myself by overthinking them? But I kind of get enjoyment out of deconstructing things (even when I'm bad at it), so meh.
  20. anime

(Spoilers ahead.) I don't disagree exactly, I actually enjoyed the show for the most part, but I think the tension was hurt by a couple of things. Firstly, you're right, most people probably didn't guess the seventh (looking at some reactions, it seems like a lot of people still thought it was Mora up until the end, which is like... come on), but actually I think it was kind of easy to guess if you thought it through enough? Gormongous' point has something to do with this but it's actually not how I knew. All it took was thinking forward to the end and figuring out who the most dramatic reveal would be. Adlet is out because we know he's innocent from his internal monologue, and they go to such lengths to prove Flamey/Fremy's innocence, so it most likely wasn't going to be her unless they pulled a big, dumb 180 (also she has the half-fiend thing, so it would have been too obvious). Nashetania is the only main character left, and conveniently the one with the least amount of suspicion cast her way, so of course it was going to be her. The rest of the cast are all side characters who would make for a really dull reveal. "Oh, it was Hans!" So what? Boooo. Anyway, being able to guess it didn't really ruin the show for me, otherwise I wouldn't have bothered finishing it, I just thought it was a little lazy. The other thing that hurts the tension is how much stuff they invent out of whole cloth in order to either trap or exonerate characters. "The temple stays open once the seal is broken!" Okay, I can accept that. "Only one barrier can be set up in one place at a time!" What? Why? Whatever, I'll take it. "We found an extra set of tablets under the temple!" Okay, are you fucking kidding me? Mind you, this has everything to do with what I value in a good mystery, so if you enjoyed it then more power to you. I just don't find it intriguing at all when the audience isn't given the tools to at least conceive of a possible solution themselves. If you're going to have a bunch of weird fantasy rules and lore, at least lay them out at the outset instead of introducing a bunch of bullshit at the eleventh hour. That's not dramatic, it's just convenient. All that aside, it was a pretty alright show for the most part. Ultimately the thing that made me regret watching was everything that happens in the final episode. I already had Nashetania picked, but I was expecting a more interesting motivation than "I'm a demon and sacrificing a bunch of people is the only way to attain TRUE PEACE muahahahahaha." Like Gorm said, that is literally the most played trope in the history of anime (or at least a close second behind guys accidentally knocking down the wall to the ladies side of a hotspring). It was already played when it was in every single SNES-era JRPG. So... yeah, after a fairly compelling build-up, I was pretty disappointed. Everything that follows that ("whaaaaaaaa, why are there seven of us again???" *sad trombone*) is like a bad sitcom or something. It seriously felt like they were trying to parody themselves.
  21. Meow.

We're fostering kittens! This is what I see when I look over at my bed now, which means I've been more or less incapable of being in a bad mood for the past week.
  22. Idle Thumbs Readers Slack & Discord

Just chiming in to say that Discord is quite excellent. Text and voice chat built into one tidy client, embedded images/links, and it shows what you're playing like Steam (in-game overlay is on their to-do list). All it really needs is more options, or to be more open to modification. For instance, the amount of whitespace between messages is kind of excessive, makes it a pain to catch up with chat when many people are talking. But hey, it's early days and the devs seem onto it. Anyway, I guess I'll go ahead and join this since I always forget to join the IRC channel. Fake edit: lol, this app looks exactly like Discord. Which came first?
  23. anime

Binge watched Rokka no Yuusha. Kind of wish I hadn't.
