Speaking of protection, does anyone here have experience with tempered glass whatchamacallit protector screens? I'm thinking it might be a good idea to gt one for my Switch, since it'll invariable bump up against something. If it isn't the dock's innards, then something else. I'm already noticing that I hesitate to 'switch' to handheld mode since I don't want to risk damaging the screen and that can't be right.

I have some on order, but not sure when they'll be here. I've never really done the whole screen protecter thing before so should be an interesting experiement.

    **EDIT**

i just checked the shipping notiec and it looks like my tempered glass screen protector will be here tonight.

World anyone provide their case recommendations? Gonna get the case and screen protector combo going before I take the baby out of the house.

So I bought the official one with Mario icons on it, and it was OK, the fit was decent but it did not fit the joycon straps in a secure way.

I bought this one and like it way more for my daily use. I put the Joycons and straps in the pockets, will hold a few games and the screen is protected. It's way smaller than the official one, and nicer to just throw in my bag.

This brought to mind Grow Home / Grow Up. If you haven't already played either, I'd recommend them. They share some similarities with BoTW, like hand-crafted worlds full of cute touches and a focus on collection, though the Grow games are much smaller scale and have no combat.

Good call! I also picked up Abzu as she really loved Journey when we played it together.

    Has anyone seen

    Spoiler

The giant dragon? or Giant in the woods? I stumbled upon the Giant last night and was surprised to run into boss fights in the wild. I saw the dragon this morning while on the train flying north of the map.

I'm totally with your wife on this one. Combat in games, specifically combat that occurs in real time - even in its most benign forms, like Mario jumpin' on Goomba heads, makes me super anxious and I tend to not play those games

Yeah, I also think this game makes it even more stressful with the weapon degradation - it's a tough game even for people who don't mind the combat.

I think I'm going to try to find bright and colorful games that focus on exploration and collection, I almost want to see if she'd enjoy 'No Man's Sky'. I do think she enjoys the "cuteness" of the world in Zelda though, those Great Fairies are awesome.

. I love that in the prologue area, you can keep asking the first guy you meet for more help with the thing he wants you to do, and he'll just tell you to get lost and figure it out by yourself. And he really means it!

I think that was a neat touch!

Alas, my wife hit a wall with the combat, it just makes her too anxious. We were at the exact same point in-game, so we've decided to continue playing one file (and that I would mark shrines I found on my commute so we can play them when both of us are at home).

She played for 4 hours yeseterday, which again, totally un-characteristic of her. Hopefully playing together will let her continue enjoying the game!

Makes sense if you think about it.

You know, one thing I'm missing from the Switch is the 3DS app that let you see which games you had played and for how long. It's a silly thing, but both me and my partner are playing Zelda and the savegames only show the date. We have super different playing styles (I'm noodling away my time stealthing butterflies and gleefully distracted by every goddamn heron I see, she's playing with more focus on the story), so I am curious how that'll translate into our playing time.

The Switch really has a sparse suite of tools. Not that that's bad per se - there's definitely no deluge of questionable software to whisk away into folders - but some things are sorely missed. Some more interactivity with friends would also be welcome, even if it's just a rudimentary messaging system or something to collect. I kind of expect Nintendo to release stuff like this in the coming months.

Yeah, I think the OS side of things feels a bit underbaked - there is a lot fo basic functionality missing. The UI seems snappy for now at least which is nice. Nintendo 64 was really the *last Nintendo console I engaged in, so I'm not sure if this is SoP or if the Switch just came in a little hot.

*i did buy a Wii, but just used it as a drunken Wii Sports machine

The game has very unforgiving combat but also gives you the tools you need to avoid combat when necessary, which is great because the hard combat could definitely turn people away from it, kinda like Dark Souls does for some people.

Yeah, the combat is the only thing I'm worried about - this is one of her first dual analog stick games as well so I'm sure getting used to movement and camera control is hard for someone who didn't grow up playing games!

  8. Surprisingly my wife woke up this morning, turned on the switch and sunk 3 hours into the game and absolutely lived it.

My wife actively dislikes video games.

I tried prying into why this had caught her attention and she said it was relaxing, it was pretty and she liked exploring the nook and crannies as there seems to be stuff hidden around every corner.

She still hasn't mastered the controls, she is constantly going into a crouch when she panics but it's really cool seeing a person find video games for the first time.

They took forever to comment on gamergate.

Yeah, that was dumb, but your ascribing a scope to the Giant Bombcast that it was never meant to adhere to; you are putting it on a pedal to justify tearing it down.

It's like saying "Idle Thumbs never really addressed the lack of representation for People of Color in gaming" which would be absurd because the politics and leanings of the hosts are pretty apparent and the show was mainly following a fairly simple scope: what they were playing and what off-beat popculture they found interesting.

  10. I think that is a weird thing to lay at the feet of a podcast that got it start reviewing energy drinks and talking about games they are playing.

I would also argue they have also made their positions pretty obvious with posts on the site and also their personal tumblrs, maybe not bashing casual listeners over the head with it but I can think of several examples in recent years.

The Tea Party showed pretty demonstrably that you can completely reshape a party without it losing its name.

Ah, I thought you had meant outside of the Democratic party - I agree with you!

The Democratic party doesn't actually serve any general constituency. They keep seeing the public make loud, clear requests and they keep saying no. It's time for a new party, please.

I agree with you, but It's hard to do that without guranteeing Republicans control for the forseeable future.

almost two years after first posting in this thread i've painted my first miniature

only thing i wanna do is paint the base a color to represent that it's a "walker" in zombicide, but i haven't decided on a color scheme yet so i'll get back to it some other time

anyway so now that's that life goal achieved, time to toss it in the garbage

Nice clean job, even with the eyes!

  14. So my sister volunteered me as a portrait photographer for my nieces bday party - does anyone use Yonguno flashes/wireless recievers?

I currently have a YN560-II that I used with the RF603-II receievers shooting through an umbrella, but my umbrella broke so I bought myself a slightly nicer softbox. A little less versatile but the light seems a little bit nicer. The problem is the flash gets put in the softbox so I can't putz around with power settings 9manual flash only) so I bought myself a wireless receiever controller combo (YN560-TX) but did not realize I couldn't control the power/zoom using the RF603-II reciever so I had to purchase a YN560-IV that has a built in wireless trasmitter.

It's something I've been meaning to do for a bit, but just annoyed with a lack of documentation on Yonguno's side hah. On the plus side I'll have a main flash + a hairlight which will be handy.

This is a recent shot using my last setup
