That's a really fascinating article about the coded (in this case literally) ideology of social systems. By the time I finished it I thought 'well, this is all extremely odd and problematic, but I'm sure it would be possible to have a civilised conversation about it and fix it'. But the dev's response...well, I really wish someone had exerted some editorial control over that...

I'd be interested to read a lot more of this kind of journalism and I'm pleased to see RPS running with it. It's probably impossible for a game to model relationships in a way which would be entirely free from gendered political assumptions - but those assumptions are certainly deserving of scrutiny.

And to be honest, I'd be happy to see games displaying a lot more in the way of individual positions on gender politics than they have until this point. I've always found the old approach of 'anyone can get off with anyone' -- adjusting any NPC's sexuality to serve the interests of the player -- kind of an easy get-out clause. At the same time, it's disappointing to see a game which tries to pass off some half-baked assumptions about gender preferences as universal truths about the laws which govern human nature. And it's further disappointing to see someone who, when questioned about those assumptions, can only double down on them.

I guess therein lies the problem: in any systems-driven game like this, there must be 'laws' of some kind. You have to pick your prejudices carefully. But in real life there are no laws; you could spend a lifetime trying to balance the probabilities behind human attraction and never come up with a fully convincing model. Part of me wants to say that the whole business of trying to model the unknowable workings of the human heart in IF and THEN statements is a fool's errand, and that only narrative media can attempt this convincingly. But perhaps it's just that nobody has got it right yet.

Yep, agree on the difficulty of making a realistic relationship system. I think a lot of the problem is he didn't own up for his own failings/bias. Everyone has biases but unpacking your feelings in an honest way, even if honesty leads to ugly realizations, is the only way to move forward.

I did not do my research on Rimworld, if I had known he was a gamergater I probably wouldn't have grabbed it. Its the reason why I never picked up Offworld Trading Company. Normally I am pretty good about seperating artist and art, but GamerGate was too aggressively destructive for me and I would hate to support any part of it.

  2. Yeah, I mean I think that's the logical next step, along with plugging in another gpu into the slot you currently use. That way you can determine if it is an issue with your GPU or with your motherboard, I assume if it was the motherboard it just wouldn't detect any sort of GPU there and fallback on the integrated graphics.

Also you could try a different cable or output on the card, I know of my GTX 970 I have a few different output options there.

This election has been the culmination of multiple long term issues in this country. The mainstream media's obsession with being 'balanced' even when one side is 100% wrong while at the same time pretending that Republican ideas and Democrat ideas are the only kind of ideas that exist, news programs that are more focused on being entertaining and drawing viewers than informing them, the desire for every political race to be super close so more people will watch the news and a very long campaign by right wing media to discredit more centrist media.

Yeah, it's shocking how terrible the 24 hour news cycle is; it seems to hard to fix though.

  4. Man,  that's a lot of kids back to back.  If I were in your shoes and had to do it I'd probably scout out a background at the location  and setup a flash+ softbox and have the kids stand on a matk so you don't have to be worried about exposure after the initial test shots.

Moo, a recent win10 update has done something to my PC. I left the update finishing on Friday and on Saturday when i turned on the PC it booted directly to the ASrock UEFI screen. Anyhow, been trying to get things fixed, tested and figured and i'm in the following situation.

With no GPU the computer boots as normal. Windows install is a clean one on my SSD. All data is stored on a separate drive.

With GPU, the computer boots directly to the ASRock UEFI screen. It asks me to select between my DVD drive, my SSD and Windows boot something. If i select the ssd it just goes to a blank screen with blinking cursor. Selecting the windows one just brings me back to this screen. Note: this is not the same boot screen that you get if you press F2 on startup. I'm just booted directly into this on.

My guesses are that either my GPU is fried, or my PSU is dying and can't power it at the same time as everything else or the mobo.  Is there any way to check at this point exactly which component is gone wrong? I'm a little hesitant to plug a possibly broken GPU into someone elses computer.

    Specs
    Crucial M4 128GB SSD 6
    8GB-Kit G.Skill PC3-10667U CL9
    Antec Truepower New 650W
    ASRock Z68 Pro3 (B3), Sockel 1155, ATX
Intel Core i5-2500K Box, LGA1155 (not overclocked)
    Sapphire HD 6950, 2GB GDDR5 PCI-Express

Wow, that's really odd. Have you tried switching the slot you currently have the GPU plugged into?

    I made mini pot pies!

I used this recipe except I used puff pastry instead of pie dough, replaced the chicken with a pound of the other ingredients, and used veggie broth. Super tasty and one of the best gravies I have ever made.

Man, those look delishious, nice job!

Third time posting a pan pizza here, but the first proper one, I feel. I just wanted to say that this recipe rocks! Thanks for sharing!

Now off to the root vegetable thing...

As someone from Chicago I have eaten my fair share (or more) of pizza, you totally nailed it! I love the serious eats pizza sauce!

Apart from the interesting start, the campaign was meh. Very repetitive I found.

MP is great fun, which is all I care about really. I doubt I will put as much time as BF3 and 4 into it though.

I've yet to dive into the single-player,  I've heard similar complaints though.

Yeah, after playing Gears of War 4 and Titanfall 2 beta, and playing Far Cry 3... I am starting to realise that as much as I respect his opinions, I have very different tastes in video games to Gerstmann.

Yep, I love Jeff and I do enjoy listening him talk about games he is excited about, but  we rarely agree on games.

I am so close to being done with night shift at least for the next few months when this starts all over again.  Then again each time I said this in the last two weeks a new problem cropped up that forced this blasted outage to keep going.

As someone who did night shift for 6 years, I feel your pain.

*sigh* Health care costs are doubling here at work, siting the affordable care act. That may or may not be true, all I know is that every year I've worked at this job, I've been paid less.

That stinks. I'm sorry ot hear that! Health care is so crazy expensive, it's nuts.

A friend of my sister has asked if I could do some photography for a children's play she's organising. That's probably a good opportunity, but my prevailing reaction is anxiety. A lot of my pictures are still dreck, and the prospect of anyone depending on them in any respect at all makes me very nervous. Also, taking pictures in front of people I don't know well makes me feel very uncomfortable, and I haven't got a clue how to make people feel comfortable for portraits. I guess there's no way to learn without giving it a go, but I tend to go with the "then don't learn" option.

Anyway, to counter my shitty pessimism, here's a nice picture I took of the aforementioned sister:

My nephew's out of focus, but it was pretty dark in there, so I was shooting wide open at f/1.4. I guess I could stopped it down and accepted a higher ISO, but I like it anyway.

Good luck! Totally get the anxiety, it feels scarier when you HAVE to perform because someone is relying on you.

Okay I figured out what was up with medals: you have to do each of the things in order. I thought most of them were resetting but in fact they weren't counting up. That makes not a lot of sense but at least now I understand why it didn't seem like I was making any progress.

Ah, okay, that makes more sense. I wish they had a better explanation in game about some of this stuff!

  13. I think I probably need to spend some more time with it,  the match I played had us as the defenders being hammered over and over again by the attackers and their big mental train.

Man, just played about 2 hours with Clyde and a few buddies and man,  that was awesome. This game really shines when your squad is working together.

From what I've played Operations, it feels like a long game of Rush with capture points instead of things you arm and disarm. In addition to that, there are the over-powered vehicles that seem to always help the attackers. I like it because it focuses on a few points of the maps and I prefer flag-filling over arming and disarming. The multiple-level aspect doesn't add much for me accept longer matches which is fine.

Man, just played a bit of that and yeah, that is a weird mode.
