http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2016/03/confirmed-elite-dangerous-will-have-official-native-oculus-rift-support/ (Edit: From the article:) In a Skype interview with Ars Technica, Frontier Developments founder and CEO David Braben was finally able to make the formal announcement he’s been waiting to make. "We’re going to be on the Oculus store," he confirmed. "We’re supporting [the Oculus Rift runtime] one point naught and the consumer release at launch, which is March 28." ...HTC Vive fans shouldn’t feel left out, either: Elite already natively supports SteamVR and the Vive, and it will continue to do so. (Anecdotally, I can confirm that the game indeed works effortlessly with the Vive Pre.) It’s inevitable that consumers will side with a favorite VR headset—perhaps some folks prefer how one feels on their head versus the other or are swayed by one VR headset’s exclusive content—but Elite will work very well on both. And that led to the first of two questions that Braben wouldn’t answer: which VR headset does he prefer for use in Elite? When we asked, he paused for several seconds. "Both parties have treated us very well," he said with a Cheshire Cat smile. (We expect we’ll form our own opinion on Elite in the Rift versus Elite in the Vive in the next few weeks, once we have final hardware in hand for both headsets. Stay tuned.) The second question, of course, was whether or not console players can join PC players in VR—we asked, specifically, if Elite might be coming to the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation VR. The only answer Braben would offer on that was a quick, cryptic "no comment." (Edit: Personal comment - Considering the dominance of the PS4 in Europe where a lot of the original Elite fanbase resides, it would be foolish not to adapt it for the PS4 if possible.)

Atlas's horizontal to vertical crouch explosive thrust could be very easily re purposed for shattering human sternums. Just saying.

http://massivelyop.com/2016/03/03/elite-dangerous-delays-full-horizons-engineers-launch-to-push-the-quality-up/ Frontier boss David Braben showed up in person on Reddit to assuage player fears. “What it means is that 2.1 is pushed out by around 6 weeks,” he says. “This is to push the quality up, which is a good thing for the game. It’s ready when it’s ready. It does mean you’ll have to wait a bit longer, but it will be worth the wait.” Fine with me. I just got my Python and am slowly improving it.

Complexmath, agreeed. Raft structures are only going to be made on endless playthroughs where you have enough time to get the raft fully upgraded, or through careful loading of your dog's inventory to pass on materials in order to jumpstart a new campaign. I know I'm loading a bunch of high end pelts, raft materials, jerky and bandages on Aesop (the dog).

I think I made it to area 4 at the end of last weekend. I remember seeing that there is an "end" to the story in the campaign mode.

Stellaris Dev Diary Archive: https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/index.php?threads/stellaris-developer-diary-archive.882950/ After watching this I can tell I'm going to get this game. At least I have a giant backlog to keep me busy until it comes out. -

I just got reminded of this game and the 4x fever hit. I heard it was going to be released sometime around now? Or did it get delayed? -

This has been sitting on my steam queue since early access because I've got the usual backlog. Congratulations to Forrest and the team for shipping and I'm looking forward to checking it out this weekend.

Helped one of my friends start Elite over the weekend. Turns out Search and Rescue missions can really get you started (Sidewinder > Hauler > Cobra MkIII in short order). Favorite quote: "Oh, I forgot gravity existed." 2.1 comments from the Newsletter preview https://community.elitedangerous.com/node/388 : 1) I love being able to scan the USS sites; I never really went to any of those because it felt like it took so much time to hunt USS after USS (and I didn't want to lose my ship if it turned out to be a trap). I also love that there's a proper use for Nav Beacons now, and it eliminates needing a system scanner if you want to min/max your ship for other functions. 2) More mission types, increased granularity on how it affects your reputation, being able to accept alternate missions without dropping out of supercruise - yes please. They really needed to smooth out the progression path here and this is a good stepping stone. 3) The mission generation overhaul (system emergency missions first, then the economy of the starport, then missions that make sense for the system government) will also aid progression naturally. Looking forward to the finished product.

Idle Weekend February 6, 2016: Playing at World's End
DocRandal replied to Chris's topic in Idle Weekend Episodes
Rob's "The mythology of the superhero" struck me as the best summary of why so many long-term comics fans dislike Snyder's portrayal of Superman. Snyder is taking Superman and giving him Batman's moral stance and mythology. Asher Elbein has a great piece on the Atlantic summarizing DC's confusion about Superman as well, and neatly states Superman's ethos: "He’s an immigrant driven not by tragedy but by an unshakable sense of right and wrong and a desire to fix the world for the less fortunate—a battle that can never end." Which, incidentally, was not what we saw in Snyder's Superman, and not where it's going as Snyder is drawing heavily on The Dark Knight Returns for the next movie. Source: http://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2016/02/the-trouble-with-superman/435408/ Getting back on episode topic, I'm loving the CW's Flash. Corny parts, yes, and suffering from superpower amnesia like all comic book shows, but there are great moments in there. -

Darkest Dungeon: Fear is a mind killer, and so is Eldritch Pull
DocRandal replied to Dr Wookie's topic in Video Gaming
I hear it gets more challenging when you hit Veteran level dungeons. I've only played a couple of hours of ver 1.0 but I could see people not wanting to play the early stuff. I'm enjoying it so far having only played about 6 hours of the first early access release otherwise. Also, there's the "complete within 92 weeks or you lose" mode. -
Dewar, there's a followup from Braben saying "No, of course we're supporting the Oculus. We said that we were waiting until the final version of Oculus was ready because then we wouldn't have to devote resources to each new prototype." So they're supporting it. Idle Thumbs 246: Mesmerized, Process, and Anxiety
DocRandal replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Jake is mesmerized in portal world. He hears GlaDOS mock the size of Sonic's hand in his drawing. Wall panels drop away to reveal a sign: JUST VIVE. -
General question about scavenging planetary materials Wookie - Is the inventory for those things tied to your ship or do you carry that stuff with you from ship to ship to ship if you switch out? I assume it's the latter because it doesn't make as much sense to farm the alloys for modifications if you don't keep them when switching ships? Also is there any limit on how many alloys you can carry?

Hey, someone's cribbing Dwarf Fortress again - John Smedley's Hero's Son
DocRandal posted a topic in Video Gaming
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/herossong/heros-song?ref=users Summary: A 2D pixel art iteration on Dwarf Fortress Adventure Mode! The main reason I say it iterates on Dwarf Fortress is the fact that for each game the world history is procedurally generated in a way that sounds exactly like Tarn Adam's labor of love, Dwarf Fortress. You then adventure in that generated world, just like Dwarf Fortress Adventure mode. (Please, someone just give Tarn Adams and his brother a sinecure so they can work on DF forever. Thanks.) By Pixelmage Games, headed up by John Smedley. Patrick Rothfuss is helping with the writing. Looks interesting, and although I am now suffering from Kickstarter exhaustion, hoping this gets fully funded. Thoughts anyone?- 3 replies

Darkest Dungeon: Fear is a mind killer, and so is Eldritch Pull
DocRandal replied to Dr Wookie's topic in Video Gaming
Darkest Dungeon 1.0 is now officially out! From the Kickstarter update: Darkest Dungeon began as a thought exercise. What would it really be like to battle the horrors so commonly dispatched in the games of our childhood? What would facing down unholy abominations day in and day out do to someone? What good is a glowing Sword of Unholy Slaying +5 in the hands of a blubbering coward? After a year of discussion over scotches and poker games, we began development full time, and Darkest Dungeon started to take shape. As we worked, we got to know the game - its personality. What it would permit, and what it wouldn't, where it left the beaten path, and where it tended to stay close to its roots. Darkest Dungeon grew up in that second year. It was not friendly, or welcoming; it did not owe you a victory, or suffer fools. It wasn’t fair, like the horror movies and war stories that formed its foundation. It broke game ‘rules’; took control away, kicked you when you were down. It smoked behind the gym with its friends and skipped class. Underneath all that badassery, though, it challenged you to think differently about heroism, and about the cost of adventuring. It taught you that preparedness was important, but thinking on your feet when the shit hits the fan was the true test. And, of course, it reminded you that overconfidence is a slow and insidious killer. For all its unyielding focus on what can go wrong in an adventure, it showed why heroism is the only antidote for failed hope. Prior to our launch in 2015, we talked about Early Access as an experience - a journey that the game and its players would take through the rise and fall of certain strategies, buffs, nerfs, changes, and improvements. What we didn’t expect is to be part of that journey ourselves. There have been exhilarating highs, and terrifying lows, not just for the hundreds of thousands of heroes, but for us on the dev team as well. We’ve often likened the experience of developing Darkest Dungeon to being inside the game, contending with our own stresses, bad bounces and heroic rallies. This game’s development has even seen the full cycle of humanity amongst our own team: births, deaths, and friendships and relationships tested. It’s never been easy It has been indeed a Long Champion boss run, but here we are - intact, (relatively) sane, proud of what we’ve made, and profoundly grateful to all of you for your support. We've been truly humbled by the excitement and enthusiasm we've seen from our community. Whether you supported us on Kickstarter, Humble, or on Steam Early Access, you have helped make this game what it is. Your feedback, suggestions, and critiques have been a part of our discussions and development since February, 2015. Not only that, your fanart, streams, YouTube videos, cosplays, theorycrafting, fanfiction, guides, and modding - have inspired and honored us, and we thank you very sincerely for sharing your creations. The best part? There's more to come! After some much needed rest, the team will get to work on our first (free) expansion featuring Town Events, a new Hero Class, and even more goodies. Beyond that, you can look forward to even more additions, modes, and content throughout the year, as well as our official support of the modding community and their efforts to extend the Darkest Dungeon experience even further. We love our game, and we can’t wait to grow and improve it with you! Alright, that’s it from us. Go to Hell, people. -The Darkest Dungeon Team
