Idle Thumbs 202: Poopwater, New Mexico
Zeusthecat replied to Chris's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I think we would know by now if it caused severe medical issues and keeping it illegal just in case we discover one day that it is super harmful is kind of strange to me. What's even stranger about what you're saying is that since weed became illegal in the 1930s, we have discovered that it is actually much less harmful than what we were originally told which gives it the opposite trajectory of alcohol and tobacco. Some more studies are always useful but there is a hell of a lot of evidence that weed is far less harmful than a good number of things that are perfectly legal. And even if it is harmful, is that really a good reason for why it should be illegal? Eating a lot of high calorie processed food probably puts you at a higher risk for heart disease but I doubt anyone would support making the distribution and consumption of Doritos illegal. If the best reason you can come up with for why something should be illegal is that we might find out it is harmful eventually, then it should probably be legal. -

Honestly, coffee fucks me up more than weed. Calling weed a drug is silly. -
One of my coworkers randomly gave me 5 PS3 games that he didn't want anymore: all 3 Uncharted games, Heavy Rain, and God of War 3. Luckily they are all games I want to play but damn I have been working hard to avoid obtaining any more games. So I guess that's +5 on my backlog.

Speaking of exploration games, Minecraft is a pretty great weed game. Especially when paired with Tiesto. Nothing like venturing out to explore new areas with some nice beats going and then having it all come crashing down when a creeper murders you. -

I really appreciate that it was brought up because it's just nice to hear someone flat out admit it rather than beat around the bush. I often find myself listening to a podcast and hearing stories that I'm almost certain came about because of some kind of illicit substance use but I'm always left wondering because that's just a thing you're not supposed to talk about publicly for various reasons. When that suspicion is confirmed it's kind of awesome because it adds a whole new slant to the story. -
That 1000 island dressing one is pretty damn creative. If you want the grossest possible ingredient to add to anything, try a splash of feta cheese water.

For a second, I thought you were going to describe this as a Shirley Temple with green olive juice in it. Thank god dirty just means "with vodka" in this case because my mind created a really fucking gross trash juice concoction there.

I finished Secret of Monkey Island SE and moved on to Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge SE last night. The Special Edition-ness of this one is quite an improvement over the first. The character models actually look decent this time! And I'm also liking the re-done music quite a bit as well. I wasn't sure how well that part would translate but I was happy to see that Woodtick still felt really Woodticky.

I've started ramping up on this a bit more lately and should be on semi-regularly. I'm playing on PS4 (PSN: xXZeusthecatXx) and will usually be on after 9 or 10PM Arizona time. I'm only level 23 right now though.

I finally got my Twitch stream running smoothly last night without any dropped frames and got through the last part of act 1, all of act 2, and the first half of act 3. I think I've seen enough now to definitively say that I don't like this version of the game nearly as much as the original. It is still decent but having all of the characters voiced has had an overall negative impact on how funny a lot of the dialog is to me. The storekeeper is still pretty solid at least. As far as the graphics go, some of the backgrounds are really gorgeous (especially the sword master's house area) but I am not too fond of how the characters turned out. I'll finish it up with the updated visuals and voice acting but if I ever end up going through it again, I'm definitely sticking with the classic graphics. As far as the puzzles go, I surprisingly got stuck for a few minutes on some of them because I had forgotten some of the specific details. Luckily those have only been minor speed bumps though and I'm managing to make it through at a pretty decent pace. Also, I finally got around to updating the first post in this thread with links to the start of each game that was played.

I'm gonna stream some Secret of Monkey Island for the next hour or two if anyone's interested. My channel's in my signature.

Speaking of that, I once played Super Mario Bros 3 while on mushrooms. It was a very appropriate game for that kind of experience and the bright and cheery colors gave me vast amounts of happiness. I think I ended up playing through all of World 1-4 just staring at the bottom of the screen scrolling by and only using my peripheral vision to navigate Mario through the level. -
Do we have a thread dedicated to making posts about the first post on a new page? I realize this describes practically every thread but I want one where each post at the top of a new page is followed by 19 posts commenting on that post. I wonder how far up its own ass a thread like that could get?

That is awesome! I played Minecraft on PC a bit with my daughter when she was 3-4 and she loved watching it, but wasn't really capable of playing herself. She's turning 6 in a couple weeks though and has had quite a bit more exposure to various games so I should jump back on that. And hopefully your son always thinks you are the coolest. But cherish these moments regardless.

The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS

Yeah, I meant for this to go in the random thought thread but I picked the wrong thread with a parenthetical in the title. Thanks for the response though, sounds like I'd like it. -

So is Dragonball Xenoverse any good? I keep seeing articles pop up about the character customization and how great it is but can't seem to find any decent reviews that actually talk about whether the rest of the game is any good. I've always secretly been hoping for a good Dragonball Z game and haven't really played anything since the first Budokai game since I hadn't heard anything favorable about anything that came out after that. -
I have been very intentional about not purchasing any new games or downloading any of the free PS+ games until my backlog is cleared. The only game I've bought in the last 7-8 months is Destiny. As far as games that don't end or that don't have a clear end, my aim is to put in about 5-10 hours of playtime.

The poo jokes are always appreciated by me. I remember when I was 8 and we stopped at a gas station and went inside to get some drinks. My dad got me a root beer and, not knowing that root beer was not a subset of beer, I started talking about how excited I was to get back in the car so I could drink the delicious beer that my father had just purchased for me. Luckily, we were able to rush out of there before anyone approached us but my dad never was able to give me a satisfactory answer for why I couldn't just drop the "root" part of root beer.

Of the 19 games in my Steam backlog that I posted back in November, I've knocked a whopping 3 off of the list: Psychonauts, Dragon Age Origins Ultimate Edition, and Dishonored (with 2 full playthroughs on this one). Of the 16 remaining games, I decided to revisit some of the LucasArts ones next so I can rapidly knock a few more off my list and feel like I'm actually accomplishing something. I started Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition last night and I figure once I finish that (hopefully by the end of the week) I'll immediately jump to Monkey Island 2. Not sure where I'll go from there but I've heard a lot of good things about that Far Cry 2 game. I should probably get on that one soon.

I bought a second PS3 controller for my daughter last week and we started playing LittleBigPlanet over the weekend. She's been having a blast and thanks to all the time we've spent playing Mario, she's been able to pick it up fairly easily. What's nice about this game is even when the levels get more difficult and she dies a lot, there are ample opportunities for her to respawn and since it is same screen co-op, I can easily show her how to do something by doing it first with my character. Add in the level creator and all the community levels you can play and I have found it to be a pretty great co-op game that a young child can pick up pretty easily.

Yeah, when I first played through MI 1 and 2 I played the original versions on ScummVM. I figured I'd give these special editions a whirl since I purchased them after the fact and they've just been sitting in my Steam library gathering digital dust. I really don't get why they didn't go with the CMI look either. Up until starting it last night I assumed that's what the special editions were going to look like since that was a great look. Instead I was greeted with freaky mannequin Guybrush. And I will definitely play the Tales of games... after I finish my backlog. Soon I will see the light at the end of the tunnel.

I've been working through my Steam backlog and started up The Secret of Monkey Island Special Edition last night. I can't believe it's already been almost 2 years since I first played it and damn does this game have some excellent dialog. I have mixed feelings on the special edition version though. On the audio side, the voice acting and musical arrangements are actually pretty solid. I think the humor in the game works better with just the text but I'm finding myself enjoying the voices more than I expected. On the visual side, I really like how pretty and high resolution-y the updated graphics are but the characters and character animations look a little bit strange. I expected it to look a little bit more like CoMI but instead the characters have this kind of weird, lifeless doll look to them. All in all, the original version of the game is the best, hands down. I think a big part of what made this game so great and funny had to do with the timing of the dialog popping up on the screen and the way the characters expressed themselves in their limited sprite forms. Having voices and weird doll looking creatures takes a little bit away from this. Also, I streamed my first session last night but for some reason the stream turned out all choppy. I'm going to mess around with my OBS settings to see if I can get it smoothed out and assuming I do, I'll be streaming the entire rest of the game throughout this week if anyone's interested.

I'm skipping Hardline. At this point, BF4 has become one of my favorite multiplayer shooters of all time and there is more than enough content to keep me interested for a long time. If your issues with 4 had to do with the shitty multiplayer connection issues, then I would recommend giving it another shot as I have had almost no issues over the last 9 months or so. If it's more of an issue with how Battlefield plays though, then I'm not sure Hardline is going to do much for you as their multiplayer modes sound more or less like re-skins or re-imaginings of modes in previous games.

I finally finished Dragon Age Origins and every last piece of DLC. It was pretty good and I liked most of the story and character dialog stuff but wasn't the biggest fan of the combat. My main character was a rogue archer and I had a really difficult time getting through a lot of the fights. I got to the point where I literally just saved my game every 50 steps or so because there were so many goddamn fights that I kept wiping on. The micromanagement and the amount of pausing that I had to do to get through a lot of them just wore me down and by the end of it, I found myself dreading every time an encounter started. And of course, I wrapped everything up with the hardest boss fight of all which was the final boss of the Golems of Amgarrak DLC. I spent well over an hour on that fight and had to look up a strategy for how to beat it before finally taking it down. So yeah, it was a good game and I liked it but I would have liked it a hell of a lot more had the combat not been such a chore. I have a feeling I might be one of those people that will enjoy DA2 because I could really go for some of this stuff being a bit more streamlined.

I finished Kids on the Slope and it was okay. There were parts of it I really liked but a lot of the show just grated on me. A little too much cheesy high school romance and people giving each other the silent treatment left and right because they are mad about something or another. And the ending really sucked hard too. I wanted to like it and thought I would like it and even did like it at times but I just don't think it quite came together for me. And now thanks to you guys arguing about it, I started Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. I'm several episodes in and there have been a few good moments but nothing terribly interesting has happened yet. It's been kind of slow and there has been a whole lot of dialog covering various characters and organizations and whatnot that I am having kind of a hard time following. Also, I'm watching it on Hulu which only has the English dub and I'm not sure if I'm a fan of some of the voice acting. A lot of the people just sound really monotone and bored. And I gotta say, that unitard getup the Major has is pretty damn gaudy. It's not really that big of a deal to me but Jesus that is a terrible outfit.
