  1. Idle Streaming Community: Twitchy, Tasty

For Twitch panels, I used this website: https://nerdordie.com/free-resources/customizable-twitch-panels/ . It let's you do some basic customization of the colors and size and spits out some really nice, consistent and professional looking panel images. This is a pretty popular resource that a lot of streamers seemingly use and it's much quicker and easier than trying to make your own. For information like follower count, subs, donations, popup alerts, etc. StreamLabs (formerly Twitch Alerts) seems to be the standard: https://streamlabs.com/. It spits out a bunch of .txt files in a location you specify that are constantly being updated with the latest data. You can then set up text with various effects in your streaming software that is linked to these files. In OBS, it is as simple as adding a new text source and linking it to the desired file rather than putting static text in. Then through filters you can add scroll effects and such. I'm not sure I'm the best person to give advice on pre/post/away stream screens since mine is just a dorky looping video of my cats having a boxing match, but I handle it by setting up a few extra scenes in OBS, linking the video file (with the video source volume muted), and layering some images and scrolling text on top. When I need to toggle to one of those scenes I just click the appropriate scene in OBS and it switches from my game feed to one of the alternate scenes with a simple fade effect. I've been constantly tweaking this presentation stuff and trying to make improvements little by little so I'm definitely also curious to hear what others around here recommend.
  2. Modest Tech: The NX Generation (Nintendo Switch)

Oh man, I just Google image searched 'joy con' and scrolled down just a bit to find... Ronald. Fucking. Reagan.
  3. To be fair, people do call Nintendo out on their shit, but everyone seems to be so weirdly enamored by them that they ultimately get a pass where other companies would get eviscerated for some of the shit they do. In addition to the things you mentioned, there was the Tomodachi Life controversy, the initial outcry that this Zelda would be yet another entry featuring a straight white male, and plenty of other things along those lines. I mean, it is interesting to see some of the same people criticizing Giant Bomb for their lack of focus on political issues in here gushing over how amazing all this Nintendo shit is when you could argue that Nintendo has a long track record of being just as problematic in those regards, and maybe even more so.
  4. Modest Tech: The NX Generation (Nintendo Switch)

So looks like Virtual Console won't be available at launch and all they are saying about it is that they will share more details "in the future". And there is already a game that is larger than the 32 GB available on the Switch which, to be fair, is only going to be an issue if you aren't buying physical carts (and aren't downloading much DLC). Nintendo is fucking weird man. There are so many things about the Switch on a fundamental level that are just being handled in the strangest way. I'll still probably get one at some point down the road but I think I'll be happy getting my Nintendo fix from my WiiU for quite awhile still.
  5. Movie/TV recommendations

I finally saw Trolls with my kids. It was dumb, enjoyable, and extremely predictable. On paper, it should be the worst movie but I found it oddly charming. I normally don't like musicals but this one worked for me because the musical numbers were generally decent and there was a fair amount of winking and nodding at how ridiculous all of the singing was. And it definitely helped that the art style was utterly gorgeous. I think my daughter nailed it when she said "This movie looks like Yoshi's Wooly World".
  6. Meow.

Ooh, vocal cats are the best! Our other cat Pima is a fat cat and she just constantly lets out these little irresistible fat cat grunts. Even when a cat lets out an angry growl where they are clearly saying "don't pick me up", it's hard to interpret it as anything other than pure cuteness.
  7. I Had A Random Thought...

I totally respect that position and it has a lot of merit. Most frozen burritos are bullshit and they either maintain a frozen core or end up exploded and burn the fuck out of your mouth. But the two specific types of El Monterey burritos I mentioned transcend all other frozen burritos. Not only do they have the best goddamn flavor I've ever tasted in a frozen burrito, the instructions tell you to just open one end of the package and throw it in the microwave with the plastic and everything so it ends up cooking perfectly. If you ever decide you can't resist a frozen burrito any longer, those are the ones to get.
  8. I Had A Random Thought...

Yes. Well, I microwaved them and everything. In case that was a trick question.
  9. I Had A Random Thought...

My diet has consisted of 66.7% burritos over the last 5 days or so. El Monterey egg, cheese and jalapeno burritos for breakfast. Random shit from Sprouts for lunch. And 1-2 El Monterey bean, 3-cheese and jalapeno burritos for dinner. So actually more than 66.7% on some nights. But tonight I mixed it up for dinner and am having a Lilly B's organic bean, rice and cheese burrito. I really like burritos.
  10. Movie/TV recommendations

Anna is a fucking trip. I am having a really hard time figuring this show out and it is in large part because everything she does seems so random and she just doesn't give a fuck about anything. Even when she blacks out she just wakes up and is like "Oh, I blacked out again and I'm all bruised and bloody, eh fuck it, I'm gonna just wander around town now and make everyone as suspicious as possible, and maybe crush a dying deer's skull with a rock". And I actually really like that aspect of it and think she's a fantastic character. It's just slightly annoying that she and everyone else seems to know something more about the shit that is going on than what the show is revealing to me, if that makes any sense. I'm guessing there is some kind of big cover up with key residents of Kettering where people are being sacrificed to a government organization in exchange for economic security and those people get flung into some trans-dimensional bullshit and are trying to communicate with time traveling moths... or something that is not at all what I just said. And the owner of the mill is the creepiest looking dude I have ever seen.
  11. Movie/TV recommendations

My wife is making me watch The Kettering Incident. I'm 3 episodes in and I think I like it? But it also kind of feels like they are purposefully withholding way too much information from the viewer and there is so much random shit happening that makes it all a bit hard to follow.
  12. Meow.

Such a shame that this thread has been neglected for so long! Here is a good video I recently recorded of our newest kitty purring her freaking head off. Her name is Winter and if you so much as touch her, she immediately starts the most violent purring I've ever heard. (you might need to turn the sound up a bit to hear it)
  13. I just finished listening to the E3 2016 episodes and I mostly stand by what I said previously about these convention episodes. It's hard to put my finger on exactly what rubs me the wrong way about them but I get this weird sense that a lot of these game developers think they are celebrities or something and just have a way of being overly boisterous in a desperate attempt to sound cool on a podcast. Maybe I'm being a bit harsh but this whole "we're a bunch of cool dudes hanging out and partying and everyone listening is probably so entertained by our antics" thing just annoys me way more than it probably should. Two notable exceptions though. A McElroy or two or three were on one of the episodes and those guys are legitimately entertaining. They just seemed like honestly funny and entertaining people and that whole segment was a joy to listen to. I think I need to check out some of their other podcast stuff. And Cara Ellison is absolutely wonderful. I had heard her on a podcast before and really enjoyed her perspective but kind of forgot about her until I heard her again on one of the E3 episodes. But glad to be reminded of her once again because she is very entertaining and her sense of humor is right up my alley.
  14. IdleMC Epoch 7.5 Final Prologue GOTY Edition

Getting Vivecraft to work in single player or in a multiplayer server is super easy. Just download it, install it, and start playing. If you don't have Optifine you will need that too but they walk you through everything you need to do on the Vivecraft site. The mod is even completely up to date and I've recently used it with Minecraft 1.11.2 in both single and multiplayer. I highly recommend it!
  15. I Had A Random Thought...

Something looks very very wrong with those horses.
  16. I Had A Random Thought...

Well fuck everything. This is pretty great though!
  17. I'll attempt to clarify since you are obviously referring to me here. I was really put off by her initial appearance on the show. I thought she was very rude and belligerent and it definitely gave me a more negative impression of her than of most other guests they've had on the show. I don't think that is an unreasonable reaction to have and I assumed that this 'lasting legacy' you keep referring to is just other people having the same opinion I did based on that appearance. I would think any guest who comes on a show and acts kind of shitty like that would have a similar 'lasting legacy', like David Jaffe, who was even worse (especially considering he was sober and still came across as a massive prick) I don't really know much of anything about Leigh Alexander beyond her two appearances on Giant Bomb. She apologized on her second appearance and that was cool. But I can understand people having a negative impression of her if they don't know who she is and all they are going off of is that one appearance. And sure, a whole bunch of those people who have a negative opinion of her probably do because she is a PoC. I'm not disputing that. But saying that that is 100% the motivation for everyone lumps me into that group by default and that is, quite frankly, bullshit.
  18. I'm just talking about my personal reaction to the episode she appeared in. I'm not at all plugged in to how the community at large reacted to any of this versus how they reacted to dumb shit other people did and I even made it clear that I was giving her the benefit of the doubt. Thanks for the unnecessarily hostile response though. That was real cool!
  19. Eh, it was pretty bad though. But she was really wasted and did come back on a later episode and apologize so she at least seems like a decent person with some level of self awareness who just acted kind of dumb. David Jaffe on the other hand... there are very few people in the world that have managed to irritate me as much as that guy.
  20. I've come to despise the Giant Bomb E3 and trade show podcasts. There is something incredibly off-putting about hearing a bunch of game developers being interviewed at the end of the day when they are all half drunk and slurring their words. And especially when they interview super annoying people like David Jaffe and Palmer Luckey (and to a lesser extent, Leigh Alexander, but I'll give her a little bit of the benefit of the doubt since she was obviously incredibly drunk in both of her appearances). I think hearing intoxicated people talk on a podcast can totally be an entertaining thing but it's pretty damn cringeworthy on these trade show episodes.
  21. I Had A Random Thought...

So there's a weird thing we started doing in the Zeus household. At some point awhile back, I randomly started saying certain adjectives twice instead of once. I thought it was hilarious because I'm a big dumb idiot like that (and because children are easily amused) so I kept doing it and before long it became a common quirk that my wife and kids all eventually picked up. If you have kids, I recommend giving it a shot! Call your wife an old old woman or call your husband a gross gross man. Adults may roll their eyes at you but I promise your kids will love it.
  22. GTA V

I finally got around to logging in to GTA Online on PC and did my character transfer. So now I have a level 104 character with all the properties and cars and whatnot that I had amassed on the PS3 version. Really cool that they supported those character transfers and knowing that I wouldn't have to start over makes it much more likely that I will get back into this. But I was quickly flooded with popups about heists and VIP shit and all this other stuff I can do and I got scared and logged out. There's so much to do now and it's terrifying and I have no idea where to begin. Also, this is fucking nuts: http://www.polygon.com/2017/2/7/14541254/gta-5-sales-75-million
  23. Idle Streaming Community: Twitchy, Tasty

I think I've got my following and auto-hosting up to date with everyone up through elvaq. If anyone doesn't see me following them let me know and I'll make sure to add. I managed to check out a few of Badfinger's streams as well as Billthecat, Feeona, eRonin, and kickinthehead. I've enjoyed everything I've seen so far and you all are doing a great job. And I hope to see more floating cats in Badfinger's Crusader Kings 2 streams because floating felines are fucking fantastic. I would love to put my schedule on that calendar but unfortunately, I think it would be tough to adhere to a schedule with a specified start time. I'm almost getting to the point where I feel like I can commit to consistently streaming every Friday and Saturday evening (with some Sundays thrown in as well) but start times for me will vary from 8PM to 11PM depending on what's going on with the wife and kids. Dad problems...
  24. Recently completed video games

For me, I think there is also an appeal to games that go super far in the other direction, like Kerbal Space Program for example. If you really boil it down, each planetary body in that game is insanely huge and sparse, which you would think would make it a prime example of an open world game that is "too big". But because of the way that game is designed and what it tasks you with doing, that massive scale makes for a much more engaging experience. It might not be the strongest example since calling KSP an "open world game" is a bit of a stretch but there are times for me where "too big" actually feels like a positive rather than a negative.
