Thanks for the info! I always found Vash's and Knives' backstories to be really interesting. Also, one other thing wasn't clear to me: -
I definitely didn't mind the runners and I feel like the moments where you are outrunning them and trying to lose them were much more exhilirating than the equivalent sequences where you are being chased by bullets.

I really liked your discussion on Trigun. I haven't seen Badlands Rumble but I've watched the series proper about a half dozen times and it is one of my favorites. I think I fall a little bit more on Twig's side that the first half of the anime was better than the second half. I really felt like Vash's goofy antics were part of that show's identity and that evaporated entirely in the second half. I still really like the whole thing but the mix of goofy shit with really badass human feats just hit all the right notes for me. Just in case, I guess I should spoiler this other stuff: -

Wait, Cell is? That sounds kind of dumb and uninspired. Given how Dragon Ball Z got super heavy into absorptions and fusions later on in the series, I imagine Super will be little more than everybody fusing into everybody else and bad guys absorbing other bad guys and then transforming and absorbing some more and ChiChi will fuse with Goku to make GoChi and Ox King will fuse with Chiaotzu to make OxChiao. By the end, all of the good guys will have fused into some terrifying mutant blob and all of the bad guys will have absorbed each other to the point where they are just one giant cake monster that turns everyone into frosting. This may sound ridiculous but watch the Buu saga. It's the logical next step from there. -
Hearthstone: Because what Magic really needed was F2P mechanics
Zeusthecat replied to Problem Machine's topic in Video Gaming
I've put a decent amount of time into this (somewhere around 5-10 hours) and it's just not doing it for me. The basic concept and mechanics are fun enough for a little while but I think I reached a point where it's going to stay pretty stale unless I start to fork out money to buy a bunch of better cards which I have no desire to do. I think I might just have a fundamental problem with the concept of digital collectible card games and how they work. If it were a game that people could just drop 20 bucks on and then all of the cool stuff gets unlocked through normal play, I think I would be much more into it. But I've reached a point now where I finished the small amount of basic single player content and all of the other single player stuff will only unlock if I spend money or play a shitload more of this game to earn gold. But playing a shitload more of this game would either mean just doing the same single player matches I've already done or playing against real people who have probably spent money on the game and have all kinds of good shit. If these were physical cards that I was purchasing though and I could collect them and hold them in my hands I would probably be way more into it. Something about it being digital is just deflating. Like I would literally just be purchasing attack and defense numbers. -
The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS
Zeusthecat replied to Henroid's topic in Video Gaming
Too bad there's not some easy way for them to base their return window on a percentage of the game's total estimated time to complete. I'm not sure how that kind of thing would be estimated but it seems like it would be a better approach than just a standard 2 hour playtime window for all games. -
I want zero guns. Having the other runner guys chasing after you was great and I don't mind more of that but honestly, anything that involved shooting, being shot at, or disarming guys was just never fun for me. I always found myself just wanting to get through those sections so I could get back to my parkour shit and regain my lost momentum. I think we all at least agree that needing to actually shoot a gun should be axed. But did any of you honestly get to a segment where there were guys trying to shoot at you and think "Geez this is fun!"? I personally thought it was fucking annoying as hell and handled kind of stupidly. The only purpose it served as far as I could tell was to make you hide behind a thing for a bit so you could peek around and see what path you needed to take, at which point you would just book it as fast as you can and hope bullets don't hit you (assuming it wasn't an area where you had to take the guys out to proceed). If you happened to slow down and bullets did hit you, all it did was slow down your momentum, and just like any other game, all you had to do was go hide behind something for your health to regenerate. There was nothing fun or interesting about that at all and seemed very out of place in the game. The only way I would want guns is if 1) they didn't allow you to pick them up or fire them, 2) you could disarm guys on the run without interrupting your momentum, 3) bullets were actually lethal and 4) there were some actual mechanic to dodging bullets as you run instead of the whole "just run really fast and try not to slow down" approach that had to be taken a lot in the first game. But I don't see that happening so I'll gladly take a sequel with no guns instead.

Oh man, Dragon Ball Z! Movie 8 (the first Broly movie) is the best movie by far. If you must see any of them, watch that one. The rest mostly suck. I always hear people say that the show should have ended at the end of the Frieza saga but in my opinion, the story arc in The Cell Games is the strongest in the series. It's not perfect and the stuff leading up to it is kind of nonsensical and full of holes but damn I enjoy the hell out of it every time I re-watch. -
I kind of felt like the writing was at its best though when they carefully towed the line between humor and drama and for me, that was exemplified by Handsome Jack's character and backstory. There was some really dark humor there and it was infinitely more interesting than most of the other throwaway stories in first person shooters. I'll agree with you though that certain events near the end of the game kind of put a damper on things and resulted in an overall less interesting character than they had built up up to that point. One of my coworkers is running a Mechromancer and also just hit his cap last night. Not sure what tree he went with but that death robot special ability has been a lifesaver for us.
-
I just hit 32 last night. And I'm playing the assassin class as well. Just capped out my sniper skill tree and I'm loving the massive critical damage buffs I have. And totally agree on Ellie's character. She is absolutely fantastic. For me the interesting parts of his character kind of come out gradually through all of the random backstory bits that pop up as you pick up audio logs and as he taunts you and chats with you throughout the game. For some reason, it just made for an interesting story that the most disgusting and terrible guy you could imagine is completely convinced that he's the good guy and how he oscillates between being relatively charming one minute and an absolute psychopath the next. Sometimes he's being the standard bad guy and telling you how mad he is and how much he wants to kill you and other times he's all chipper and friendly and making light sarcastic jabs at you. He even rewards you for completing a certain quest for him (which is one of my favorite quests in the game). For some reason, his character just came together for me and resulted in a much more interesting villain than 95% of other villains out there.

We literally just did that same segment last night. I wasn't sure what to think of Torgue at first but he's turned out to be a pretty fun character and that DLC is pretty solid. Generally speaking though, the writing in this game is kind of all over the place. I really liked BL2 when I originally went through on 360 and I still really like it going through it all again now but I'm finding myself cringing a bit more at some of the dialog. The writing for Tiny Tina is especially bad (at least in the main story, I hear the Tiny Tina DLC is much better). But I do feel like it kind of finds its footing later in the game and finally starts hitting the target as Handsome Jack becomes more of a constant presence. There are definitely some issues with his character but I really think he is one of the best and most interesting villains I've come across in a game.
-
I really love that Torgue in Borderlands 2 is voiced by the same guy who voiced Mister Satan in DBZ. I think that was the best casting choice in the entire game.

No, no it wasn't.

Obligatory Comical YouTube Thread II: The Fall of YouTube

I've got Jim Breuer on the brain right now. -
Side note: Jim Breuer is a fantastic stand up comedian and a great example of what you are talking about. My wife and I went to see him recently and we noticed a stark contrast between him and his opening act. The opening act went for cheap offensive humor that amounted to little more than making fun of Jewish people (he was Jewish himself), Mexicans, and Blacks. He had a few funny lines but just trotting out the same old stereotypes made for some pretty weak comedy. Then Jim Breuer came out and told the most amazingly hilarious personal anecdotes in his unique style and had the whole audience in stitches for over an hour. He never uttered a single profane word and none of his material involved really making fun of anyone other than his dad. He even gave my wife and I a hug after the show, thanked us for coming, and took a selfie with us (I need to get around to posting that). I'm not sure what the point of this post really is. I just really like Jim Breuer and in the context of this discussion, I think he is a great example of how to do excellent comedy without resorting to cheap insults.

Idle Thumbs 213: Build the Nublar
Zeusthecat replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Did Kevin McAllister birth the term "woof" or was that just a thing the cool kids were already saying at the time? Is it supposed to be the ironic opposite of a catcall? Does catcalling ever involve just meowing at people? If it does, I want to see that version of a catcalling video. -
The only use I have found for that thing is to have it display the time so I don't need to alt tab out of a game to see how far past my bedtime it is.
-
Wait, there's another world after Star World?
-
I would recommend watching it again someday. It has aged decently and still has a fantastic soundtrack. It also helps if you were into Saturday Night Live at the time because I really think they did a great job harnessing the stupidity of that recurring skit and turning it into a movie.
-
Wait, so is the level with the weight sensitive moving platforms where you have to use the cannon suit to hit switches as you go the final level in the game? If so, that is what we're on and we are finding it nearly impossible to beat. You pretty much have to get to the checkpoint and then die and restart from the checkpoint if you want to have enough time to even get close to the end. And jumping up the staircase of bullets always eats up a decent amount of time too.

Look, I know this movie is stupid but seriously, how can anyone not have a stupid grin on their face through this whole segment. -
I know this is an extremely unpopular and incorrect opinion but Night at the Roxbury is a great movie.
-
I think that's a good perspective and I'd say that's pretty much where I fall as well. It's gotta be really tough to be 'funny' for a living and I think comedians generally deserve a little bit of leeway if they sometimes cross the line. If their whole schtick is to just be offensive though, then fuck that. That's just boring and unfunny.
