  1. It's been a few weeks since I've mentioned that theCatamites is incredibly skilled in choice of subject matter for these games. I'd like to know how it is done. These games are short and cannot develop concepts and rhetorics of length, but there is so much low-hanging fruit when it comes to subject matter and perspective that there is no need to do so. TheCatamites makes it look so easy. Garlo's Gambit brought to mind the survivorship-bias of many wealthy individuals who live in a society fueled by faith in the just-world hypothesis (often cited as "meritocracy"). With rare exception, when a wealthy individual tells their rags-to-riches story (or their grandfather's) it involves a moment of betrayal and exclusion and always a unreplicable bout of luck. Monetary wealth is inherently exclusionary because the imbalance is what motivates the labor paid for. Garlo doesn't drive the trash-truck any more, why would he? He can fly now and has a magic castle. I don't blame Garlo. I would quit my job if I didn't have any needs to fill, regardless of how destitute my former co-workers remain. Maybe George wouldn't be so envious of Garlo if George had pulled up his boot-straps and walked around town rather than going to a bar. Then he would have been able to take the opportunity to grey-market some eggs before they made it illegal. Back then, regulation was light. Nowadays they have GPS installed in the work-trucks watching your every move and sorcerors can't buy eggs without an accompanying invoice from the Forbidden City. That's because Garlo got his break by being inconsiderate, betraying George, stealing from the Forbidden City and from Garlo's employer; it's not replicable and therefore exclusive and shameful. And here Garlo is bragging about his crimes as if they'll legitimize themselves if repeated enough times while smiling and laughing. This video is somewhat related and I enjoy it. It's not super related though so I'll spoiler-tag it.
  2. Did you not hear the part about NFL GameDay Heroes being a COMPLETE family entertainment? Why would ruthkeith play anything else? Family entertainment is now a complete.
  3. Game Jams

I found this humorous. ---- I just updated my #CloneJamJake entry. It's much more true to my vision. http://gamejolt.com/games/adventure/hiplick-compacts/36629/
  4. Nobody expects the Dragon Age Inquisition

Has anyone found any reviews of the xbox 360 version? The one's I've seen are for xbox one and ps4.
  5. Game Jams

Antholojam seems to expect far more commitment than most game-jams.https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1Ffmot4LGF5cdxH79pE-uAsRM40ZYipz-spPgiHOHkCM/viewform CloneJamPorpi is going to be from. November 14th through the 16th. I am hoping to do something for that. I learned a lot from CloneJamJake (still am actually since I'm still adding stuff to it) and I am a Porpentine fan. http://jams.gamejolt.io/clonejam
  6. For the week of November 10th, 2014 we will be playing: Garlo's Gambit by thecatamites You can download the single game from here for free Or you can buy the entire collection of 50 games from here.
  7. Cigar Afficionado immediately reminded me of The September Issue and its main focus, Anna Wintour. The word "exhultant" is used so many times in the game that I think of it as an inside-joke of which I can appreciate, but never really be a part of. I think its use largely has to do with this idea of looking good; not just looking good, but looking better than everyone else. "Busters" are treated as fashion items in the narrative of the game, but are more of a tool or special ability in the game's mechanics. Honestly, this inconsistent treatment of "Busters" dilutes the attractive theme of competitive beauty and glamourous spite. I think the theme would have had more potency if the smoke of "Busters" couldn't knock out guards and was nothing more than a symbol of status. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_-pDpLVVNc --- I really enjoy the theme. The fantasy of two glamorous and powerful women having an intimate ongoing war between them whose main front is the attainment of high-status icons and ensuring scarcity of them, is really fun. Personally, there is something particularly enjoyable about the main actors being women rather than men. I'm used to the stories of arbitrary wagers between wealthy gentlemen such as the one in 80 Days or Trading Places, but I find a rivalry between influential ladies to be somewhat exotic. I have little idea of why the gender of the characters has such an appeal for me. I tend not to enjoy male byronic heroes while I seek out female ones. I find this a bit problematic, but it is true of my current tastes.
  8. The Sailor's Dream

    Thanks for the update.
  9. Amateur Game Making Night

I tried to slow it down, but because I'm using rigidbody.AddForce() I ended up having to tune the masses of all the blocks and stuff like that. I guess I ended up making it faster. I typically play with an analog-stick so I rarely notice it being too fast since I can apply small amounts of force. I'm interested in playing with that some more so that you can do as much with the keys. As far as custom audioclips, that would be awesome. I'm not sure what would be involved, but I'll look into it. Maybe there is an established way for people to put their own audioclips in Unity games. If nothing else, you know the developer so he can just put them in for you. I'd also be fine with sending you the project file if you want to do it yourself. I'm leaving town for the weekend though, so any of that would not happen until next week.
  10. Amateur Game Making Night

I put up new builds of the game formerly known as "I can't do anything right". It's called Musical Stacks now. http://clyde.itch.io/musical-stacks
  11. The Sailor's Dream

Oh noes. I was coming into the thread to make sure I should get it, not to find out it doesn't work sometimes.
  12. Titanfall

  13. Titanfall

Sure. I'll be out of town this weekend though. Don't let that stop you if you can find others.
  14. Titanfall

I've had the DLC maps pop in when I play the default Attrition mode. I bought the season-pass and I would be fine with everyone getting them for free. I imagine that there would be a lot of grumbling from others though. I'd just enjoy playing them more frequently. When I played Capture the Flag last night there were 50 people playing. I'm sure that the mode won't be available during the afternoon. The game certainly has population problems for everything that isn't default Attrition. Luckily that's my favorite mode.
  15. Titanfall

I love that I can see how many people are playing which modes. I just saw that there were a bunch of people playing Capture the Flag and jumped in for some really fun matches. The numbers being there saves me a lot of frustration.
  16. Intoxicated:

I decided to go wild early this afternoon and now I can't post anywhere but this thread. All day at work I was sketching ideas for how to expand my CloneJamJake game. I'll probably open Unity within the hour. I saw that the new Call of Duty was release so I watched the twitch stream for two rounds. For some reason I can't stop comparing Call of Duty to Titanfall, and watching the player's inability to attach to a wall I'm like "why bother?" I know that is unfair but....whatever. I haven't bought a game in two or three months anyway because I spend all my gaming-time either making them or playing the ones that people I communicate with make. Dragon Age comes out right after CloneJamPorpi ends, and I'm super psyched about that though. I hope the recognize that I took care of the Anders problem in a reasonable way. It'll be weird playing a 60-hour game after playing 900 fifteen-minute ones. I haven't even gotten through the first mission of my free copy of Dishonored. It's so fucking long. Also there was a guy checking for photo I.D.s at the voting booth and I don't think he was in an official capacity. That was kinda unnerving. I think he was trying to destroy the Democrat-vote, but I also don't see how the actual officials would know that I'm me when I vote without my I.D. so I felt indignant without a definitive reason.
  17. For the week of November 3rd, 2014 we will be playing: Cigar Afficionado by thecatamites You can download the single game from here for free Or you can buy the entire collection of 50 games from here.
  18. This is a good example of how bundling all these games together gives us benefits that playing some of them in an asunder fashion would not. I really get a lot out of 50 Short Games being put together as a whole. I think that a lot of small, short games could benefit from this template. That Stephen Murphy article in Arcade Review #3 was so interesting. I really enjoyed finding out that there was a subculture loading hobbyist JRPGs into an editor and just playing the interesting bits.
  19. Post Your Game for Playtesting and Feedback!

Here is the Camera Zoom Script in case anyone wants to try it out.
  20. Post Your Game for Playtesting and Feedback!

@SpennyDubz Thanks! @Dinosaursssssss I like the camera zoom, but I used a lot of guess-work in making it and now I'm not sure how to slow it down when I fly past horizontally really fast.... Oh I just got a cool idea. Maybe I should slow down the time-scale if position.x changes too rapidly while camera is in full zoom. I'll post the camera-zoom script when I get home today. @ihavefivehat The way I develop the cube games is really slow. I put in some mechanic and then fiddle with it for a day or two. Trainwrecks are made quickly and I have to depend on iconic imagery and melodrama. I also enjoy the dualism of it though. I've started to refer to the messy games as "trainwrecks" and the others as "works in progress". I played the clown game a couple of times yesterday.
  21. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Changing the motive to cash or amnesty can really gnarl justice. Here's a pretty good article about it. It's a more extreme circumstance, but this is the basic pattern that concerns me. Give me $1000 and I can find you someone who makes a death-threat (that wouldn't have done so otherwise).http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/how-fbi-entrapment-is-inventing-terrorists-and-letting-bad-guys-off-the-hook-20120515 The This American Life story cited in that article is worth listening to. Also, Frontline just recently has a documentary about this case: http://m.huffpost.com/us/entry/3333205 It highlights how the incentivization of finding criminals does more damage to those who are lonely or cognitively challenged.
  22. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

I wonder if anyone is going to make a death-threat so that an accomplice can cash in. While that may seem like a pretty obvious mistake to many of us, GG has shown a tendency to attract people who lack much ability to extrapolate consequences beyond short-term goals and game-plans. I worry that GG will throw one of their weaker members under the bus for a possible cash-grab and a chance to get an example of the lack of compassion and hypocrisy of social-justice warriors they are always raving about. I have a hard time imagining a scenario where paying informants is wise or ethical.
  23. I'm looking through HTML5 demos and I ended up spending some time playing Blob Volley2 against the computer.
  24. Unity Questions Thread

The new UI system is so much better. I don't know when 4.6 will be released, but the only problem I've seen is the watermark on the webplayer builds. There is no watermark on the PC builds. I suppose another option would be using NGUI or some other current solution.
