  1. Movie/TV recommendations

I don't watch Korean cinema, but I watch a lot of cheesy 16-episode Korean romance dramas. I know what you mean about singling out a nation, but the fact is that even though 90% of the Korean romance-dramas are not to my liking, there are certain qualities that I've only been able to find on DramaFever. It's hard finding good cheesy romances.
  2. Life

Maybe, but from what I read, the timing chains in the toyota echo and the Honda fit require no maintenance for the life of the car. This is my first time reading about it so I may be jumping to conclusions too quickly.
  3. Life

Today I learned that timing-chains are better than timing-belts. I'll have to consider that when buying cars.
  4. I Had A Random Thought...

My understanding was that coffee-cake is to be consumed with coffee, not made out of it.
  5. An Education (in video games)

I got my mom to try Journey and it was a complete failure. One thing I take for granted is that I trust that the game will have something to discover. She just looked around and decided that there wasn't necessarily anything beyond the dune. I thought that telling her that the goal of the game was to go to the mountain with the light-beacon would be enough of an objective, but there are moments where you aren't supposed to bee-line towards it, so it actually caused more confusion. The very first challenge of using the magical grate to boost to the first sitting-spot was nearly impossible for her, and she had very little reason to care. During our exit interview, I asked her what she thought and she said "I never knew what to do." By comparison, I showed her Assasin's Creed 2 and gave her the controller after loading my saved game (I didn't want to go through the tutorial and all that). I just said "You want to kill the monk on top of that tower and this button climbs and this button stabs." She spent about an hour navigating to the tower and climbing it. She died a few times, but she was motivated by the game in a way that she was not by Journey. When she killed the monk she was all "Hahaha, I Got Him!" but then when I offered to lend her the Xbox she was like "no thanks." Makes me think that sometimes specific levels might be good introductions rather than games in their entireity. Still, I have yet to see someone who had no interest in games play something and suddenly be like "Why haven't I been playing these all my life?!"
  6. I Had A Random Thought...

I just saw someone almost get pinned between a truck and a large metal container. That reminded me, and hopefully them, of how fortunate we are. Memento mori.
  7. Tone Control is a Podcast!

Great podcast. A thread developed in the conversation involving the limits of word-language. Y'all played at the suggestion of a "tonal bible" for a game and Steve was often asking about principles that guided writing or development. A dissonance occured whenever someone would begin to explain their creative reasoning, and realize how complex the issue was. In the process of attempting to communicate how game narratives are kept cohesive and true to themselves, the question showed the qualities of a koan. All three of you came up with interesting hypothesis that spoke to what design-principles can be and what they cannot be. The dilemma was then demonstrated with the explanation that Lilly's value in The Walking Dead could not be pitched with mere words, implying that the game synergizes content in an indescribable way that is none the less a shared experience. The title for the podcast was well chosen.
  8. Episode 236: Q & A

"Governing, rather than winning." is now my strategy-game motto.
  9. I Had A Random Thought...

Large quantities of refined sugar make me feel like shit. At most, I can eat a glazed donut over the course of 30 minutes. Otherwise I crash, silently mourning and wailing the loss of all my potential.

What do you get out of watching the oeuvre of a single director?

    Edit: double post
  12. Forget Mickey Mouse, let's talk about something that is significant: http://articles.washingtonpost.com/2013-08-27/opinions/41497155_1_fair-use-king-s-speech And consider how charging 50 cents a word could affect how history is written: https://www.techdirt.com/articles/20130118/16193821734/churchills-heirs-seek-to-lose-future-charging-biographer-to-quote-his-words.shtml Awesome episode. Zach's perspective on copyright was really hopeful in neat way that I hadn't considered. Fan-fic is such an interesting concept, though it typically isn't very interesting to read. I love hearing the concept being discussed. Also: Is there any reason that Idle Thumbs shouldn't have one of those patreon accounts?
  13. It's Halloween!

Halloween is pretty much the LEAST interesting night to dress up. Take matters into your own hands. Same goes for giving presents and Christmas.

  16. Journey (thatgamecompany's next thing)

    I enjoyed reading that.
  17. Idle Explorers (Spelunky, um, thumbs)

Yeah, I find myself sitting at the computer at 7:58 pm EST. I sit there rhythmically tapping until I see the steam-overlay pop-up that says "Hammerpants is now playing Spelunky" and that's when I know the new daily challenge is available.
  18. I Had A Random Thought...

I was playing Stacking three days ago and when I was describing the feel it gave me, I brought these up.Edit: oh wait, I clicked the link and the books I read as a kid were square (not rectangular) and the illustrations on the covers were not as "great".
  19. San Francisco Residents!

What's this I hear about a secret Google floating-base of stacked cargo containers with antennaes. That shit sounds like it would be some glamorous local gossip to have available to ya.
  20. GTA V

I was just on a mission during which I saw a pedestrian performing CPR on someone who had collapsed. Being a good citizen, I approached them to see if I could be of some assistance. -MISSION FAILED- This game is broken.
