Great comments in response to this Riendeau opinion piece. I'm addicted to watching crowds of individuals becoming aware that other people exist. It's like watching a plant grow or something.

I imagine the charity-simulator would reveal the inherent scope and dehumanization of optimization to the player. I need to state that I am deeply motivated by optimization when I play games. One of the reasons I'm interested in Pedercini's talk is that I have a hard time figuring out what motivates me besides optimization when I play games. I also have a hard time imagining an argument against using currency or resources in the most efficient manner when doing large-scale charitable works. I think there is one, I just don't know what it is. Maybe the charity-simulator game could take place on two scales. There would be the grand scale where resources are collected and distributed with general policy, and then there would be the human scale where you appear as a player character in the environment where the charity is targeted. I'm fascinated by the question "Does efficiency free us or enslave us?" When people do things inefficiently, it seems like a waste; but I would be completely demotivated if I had to do everything the most efficient way all the time.

3 questions for those of you who work in the Industry
clyde replied to CrosswalkNorway's topic in Video Gaming
If you never had to pay for anything, what would you do with your time? -
I had a conversation with my dad about global warming. I was surprised how far we got by just discussing some basic stuff about the carbon-cycle and chemistry.

Super League Football is surreal and wonderful. It's a rather high-skill table, that should be noted. So here's how it works: There is an upper playfield with a goal keeper. As you shoot ramps and lanes, a combo meter fills at the bottom left. Each yellow block (and then later each red strip) represents a player on the opposition that is in your way. If you get the ball into the upper playfield early on, a bunch of targets will block your shot. But if you fill that combo meter up, players disappear from that upper playfield (making your shot for the goal easier). But the combo meter lowers over time if you don't make ramp and lane shots. If it empties completely, you lose possession of the ball. If the ball drains during this hurry-up or id you don't make 3 flashing lane shots, the opponents score a point. Every time I score a goal, I feel it. It's a great table.

Well I look forward to playing games made by the inadequate and ashamed. Sounds kinda interesting. FIGHTING!! (is what they yell to each other in romantic-comedy Korean dramas)

This could be a game in itself. I think it would be really fun to bet on the races. Maybe I can use my winnings to bribe competitors, sabotage cars, and take the risk of placing illegal modifications on them.

It was a hard choice; voting between "hand" and "shades". I went shades.

I'm just going to say it here: I want to say thank y'all constantly for the advice and answers, but it would be half the posts in the thread so I don't. Know that your input is appreciated.

If you put either of these in an Update method, would it initialize the i variable (or the counter variable) back to zero everytime it updated?
-
It is rather intimidating, but it also makes it look possible.

I'm speaking of displaying a 2d sprite in Unity specifically. I'm guessing that I have to make a quad-object and then use a .png for its texture, but I don't know. Unrelated question: Is there any reason I would use a for-loop instead of a while-loop? For-loops seem way more confusing; I would like to avoid them.

Variable Scope I had missed this. Variables are only accessible within the blocks where they are created. So if I want to use the variable "speed" in the Update method, I have to either create the variable in the class block (not within one of the method blocks) or in the Update method block. Creating the variable in the Start method block and then trying to call it in the Update method block will result in an error.

I look forward to making free-to-play games. It'll be nice to have your perspective available.

Progress Report for week #2 What was my goal? Did I accomplish my goal? -no What challenges did I face? - I played 11 hours of the limited-time Titanfall Beta. I also started doing a tutorial in addition to the videos that sent me in a wildly different tangent. Videos 2-5 were fun, but five minutes into 6, I was like "I don't want to learn about what I can do with cameras right now, I just sat through 2 hours of terrain-building and flora and I want to learn more about the programming part." I started the space-shooter tutorial and got tripped up by the scripting portion. After getting advice from this thread and the IRC party, I started looking into C# and began to watch the scripting videos. Made a lot of progress actually. No regrets. What is my long-term goal? -Make the dancing game. What is my goal for week #3? - I ended up getting a book on Unity development and I'd like to make some progress in it. I'd like to read through and experiment with what I learn the following: -the two chapters on scripting -the chapter on prefabs -the chapter on GUI -I'd like to actually make a very short twine-like in Unity with what I learn from this chapter. -the chapter on character controllers What challenges am I likely to face and what steps can I take to prepare for them? -Amnesia Fortnight is actually this week, not last. So I'll take my advice from last week and limit my twitch watching to lesser than or equal to my time spent learning how to make a game. -I might get side-tracked again, but that might be a good thing. I still don't know what all I need to know. In moments that I find out, my goals mutate and I think that's ok at this stage. -It's possible that the GUI and scripting chapters won't cover everything I need to know in order to make a short twine-game in Unity. I need to be prepared for that possibility so that it won't be demotivating. I'll be ready to accept that I need to find some additional resources for that learning-project. -I still don't know how to create a 2d sprite. I really want to know that. I need to figure out how to make a 2d sprite. That is an additional priority. I'll search a bit and then start asking y'all.

Idle Thumbs 145: Rich Uncle, Cool Uncle
clyde replied to Chris's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I'm finding myself feeling the way Chris seems to think about Threes!, about the Titanfall Beta . When I play it I'm having fun and the expiration-date encourages me to play it more, but after a few matches I'm like "I'd rather have washed dishes or played Papers Please." I think I have fully integrated the game-hipster mentality. I think this is the first time that a game being super fun isn't enough for me to want to play it. I don't know what Titanfall is missing, but the game isn't lacking in fun. Edited for an additional metaphor: This feels similar to realizing that a beat and a melody is not enough to make a song that I will add to a playlist. Edited again for more precise simile: This feels like realizing that just because I enjoy dancing to it, I don't want to put it on my digital audio player of choice. -
I don't understand what you are saying. Is part of your premise that there was more gender equality in the 1940's than there is today?

I can't wait to see how my advice pans out; I never manage to be foolish enough to take it

I'd like my burn card slots to fill automatically but be replacable by going into the menus. I forget that they need to be replaced between matches and find it tedious.
-
I'm sure it will be further developed, but I think it will be a much different experience.

Holy shit. That's awesome.
