  1. Philosophy & Economics

Dude makes a tautology between belief in an existent meritocracy and just-world hypothesis. Solid.
  2. Zeusthecat started playing through the Lucas Arts games. https://www.idlethumbs.net/forums/topic/8703-the-big-lucasarts-playthrough/ For a while we had a good group playing the Spelunky daily-challenge together, but it probably needs a batch of people new to Spelunky to freshen up. https://www.idlethumbs.net/forums/topic/8909-idle-explorers-spelunky-um-thumbs/ There may be others, and I suppose you could consider game-specific threads as a kind of game-club, but I don't know of any others that are trying to maintain a regular schedule of progression.
  3. As I'm trying to distill what I like about these games, I'm reading through Tolkein's essay on faerie-stories. http://brainstorm-services.com/wcu-2004/fairystories-tolkien.pdf I really like this line on page 8.
  4. Miffy: I only get a right channel too. When my inlaws visited us on Kauai, we went on a zip-line thing. Our guide had a heavy Hawaiian accent. My wife and I didn't think anything of it, but in later discussion with my mother-in-law and father-in-law, we discovered that they had thought the entire persona was for show. They had just never heard that accent in anything that wasn't a performance I guess. My wife and I were working with people who had far heavier accents at the time. Also I lived in New Orleans, working as a server for a while and then later when I moved farther north (Georgia) I was a a server at another restaurant. I was serving a wealthy looking, business-dressed black couple in the georgian restaurant and as was habit at the time respnded with "sho" when they asked me to go get some ketchup or something. They were immediately very offended and didn't speak to me or make eye-contact for the rest of their dinner. They obviously thought I was talking to them differently because they were black. I can understand that. It's hard to convince people that "sho" for an affirmative and "alright" in greeting are the speech patterns of white guy when not in NOLA.
  5. Did he give the old belt to someone? Are you going to make a video Cine? Here is the thread link for convenience. I do miss the voice of N'Gai Croal. He said some insightful stuff.
  6. This is the first time I've heard of this glitch-pokemon. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/MissingNo. I'm going to check out the fan art for this thing.
  7. This is largely what I appreciate about it. I enjoyed being able to get a taste of playing through the latter half of Georges Melies "A Trip To the Moon" with such a minimal investment of time or effort.
  8. Upon further investigation, I think they are all on Glorious Trainwrecks for free. I'd like to do them in the order presented in the 50-game package. What I'll do is post what game is next for people who haven't bought it and put a link to the individual download. If I can't find the individual download, we'll figure out what to do then.
  9. Awesome. Looks like we have enough to tango. I'll make a thread for it in a bit.
  10. Would anyone else be interested in having a thread where we play through 50 Short Games by thecatamites, one a week? http://thecatamites.itch.io/50-short-games The games only take 5 seconds to 5 minutes each and I'm pretty sure that the can all be downloaded for free if you want to do that instead of getting the convenient launcher and the documentation for 4 pounds. Edit: I might be wrong about that, I only see a few on this page http://harmonyzone.org/MiscGames.html I'm playing through these games and I'm enjoying them in a much different way than I typically enjoy games. I think a casual club like this would be très enjoyable.

I'm not sure how much of the assets you want to design yourself, but I've seen multiple city-kits in the Unity asset store that give you building pieces that you can mix and match. You might even be able to use the models in UE4. Here is one of them: https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/18618
  12. Titanfall

Generation 3 for Life! I loved using the 40-cal when I was a titan-killer. I switched to the chain-gun to farm more minions. Last night though, I saw an enemy pilot try to jump onto one of our titans from a rooftop. The titan had a 40-cal and shot the pilot out of the air right in front of me; giblets everywhere. One of the functions of the cloud is that it obscures visibility while you are getting away to recharge your shield. The vortex is fun just because you can judo missles back at the enemy that fired it. I like how active you have to be with it, but the particle-shield lets me unload as the titan on the other side bobs and weaves in a panic. I'm glad capture-the-flag is back. It's the only game type that feels like a team-effort. I played some good games of it last night. Running the flag, returning it, escorting, and defending are all really enjoyable for me. I played a great low-scoring game on Bones last night.
  13. Titanfall

I love the day where I realize that I'm too comfortable with my build and the routes I run and that I should start reinventing myself. I am incredibly effective in Attrition with a smart-pistol after I've picked up a carbine from a dead soldier, my titan equipped with a chaingun, particle shield, and cluster-missles. Today I was playing and I picked up a spitfire LMG off of another soldier and started using it. Since I've been playing a lot of Insurgency the LMG now has some meaning to me. The lack of a bipod drives me crazy, but finding cover at medium or long range and blasting fools is fun as shit. It's a vastly different playstyle than what I am used to. I'm not getting very many points, but I don't really care. I have to remind myself to enjoy games non-optimally sometimes. It gives me a deeper appreciation for them.
  14. Minimalism

Much of this discussion is based on the question "How can apples be compared to oranges?", but it eventually leads to an exploration of what minimalist design in games is, and what it achieves. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=UvuoHXn5Mro
  15. Minimalism

I see what you are saying ihavefivehat. Speaking of cynical optimism (which I now understand has nothing to do with what you were saying earlier), a .gif showed up on Reddit today and reading through the comments is interesting because it's people comparing their observations on an applicable subject. Edit: I guess I'm conflating existentialist struggle with Marx's alienation.
  16. Fan Fiction

Tonight I found out that people make movie-trailers for EXO fanfic. THe world is an amazing place.
  17. Minimalism

On what are you basing these observations of cynicism and insincerity? I haven't played Mountain, but I watched some of his videos. Here is some of David OReilly's video-work. It doesn't strike me as insincere, but I do get a good hint of the cynicism from which existentialist struggle is born. That form of cynicism is incredibly optimistic in my view; you have to be optimistic in order to accept the fact that we are trapped in our own experiences with no objective purpose, but you are going to move onward anyway.
  18. Other podcasts

and I got the recommendation fro Anym. I really like it. I hope they eventually do something like record each other locally and then assemble all the tracks because the audio-quality does need improvement. Pip drops mad knowledge though.
  19. Minimalism

For you, what might a formalist game look like?
  20. Amateur Game Making Night

I just put an asset in my game that is not temporary. After working on it for a few weeks, this feels like the beginning of a new phase. It's relieving to commit to something on the screen; I can now say things like "Maybe for the next game" instead of having to reinvent the process all over again constantly. No regrets though. In the past week, I've realized that the visual style of my games will largely be a reflection of my particular workflow; so refining my workflow is refining my art-style.
  21. Unity Questions Thread

Thank you. I used the applet at the top of the page you linked and it demonstrated that this is the problem.
  22. Unity Questions Thread

The game I'm working on requires that I hold down multiple keys while also using other keys for repeatative input. So for instance, I want to be able to hold down 'r' and 't' while also using pressing down 'left' and 'right' arrow keys in an alternating fashion. Sometimes I run into keys that just don't seem to work in combination. In this case, it's 't'. I can't get 'right' input on the horizontal axis if I'm holding down 't' and any of these other keys at the same time: r,e,w,q. But the 'right ' input on the horizontal axis will work if I hold down 't' with 'y' at the same time or just 't' alone. I looked through the axis in the input-section of the inspector in "project settings" but 't' doesn't seem to be bound with anything that would create this conflict. Anyone one know what is going on or a good search-term for this type of thing?
  23. I Had A Random Thought...

If she had written a forum-post instead, then she could have had her ideas clarified through egalitarian discussion. This is a great example of why I don't want to write articles. The medium demands an amount of certainty that I rarely have. I love being able to come here and discharge ambigious secretions that are eventually molded into interesting ideas through questioning and conflict by a wide variety of perspectives. I often post something that is barely an idea and by the time the thread dies, I've got a unified theory.
  24. Nobody expects the Dragon Age Inquisition

You have to give instructions to your entire party. Tell one of them what to do, pause it, switch to another, tell them what to do, ad infinitum. At first it will feel tedious, but it eventually makes you feel like you, the player, are team-work incarnate (which is a pretty cool feeling if you ask me).
  25. Coming Out Simulator 2014

Here is the scene I was thinking of.
