I'll say that the person I've encountered who loves Guacamelee the most is Mexican. That's just anecdotal, of course, but I think there's something to be said about seeing your culture represented in games when it doesn't show up that often otherwise. In this respect, I don't think Guacamelee's any worse than Grim Fandango or something similar.

I'm with you, Zeus. I loved that game. Made in my hometown, too!

This is a really good piece about race in games. I think it brings in a really valuable non-North American perspective.

Man, kind of sad to see some people I really like, like Andrew Vestal, on that list. I'm with you, here, Bjorn. I'm totally down with criticizing somebody's work. Bombarding them on Twitter with a bunch of lame jokes seems pretty petty, though.

That took me a second too. It's Destructoid and Giant Bomb, both game news websites.

I actually really enjoyed the combat in Guacamelee. I also enjoyed the platforming, but it took me a while to get used to it, because I suck at platforming. The reference humour wasn't my favourite, but it didn't bother me and some of it was cute. I preferred the stuff in the backgrounds to the stuff in the dialogue.

I think I agree with you there, Gorm. I found myself wondering at points why she was so into Max. Something to help establish that would have been nice.

Don't give up, Jake. Keep trying to inject it in the fuck yeah! It will work out one day.

Those conversations are the main thing I hope Dishonored 2 pulls from Deus Ex. Also, I think Deus Ex was more generous with non-lethal takedown options.

My family are the most important people in the world to me and I honestly have no idea what I'd do without them. Even though they drive me crazy a lot of the time, I feel incredibly lucky every day to have them in my life. Nothing scares me more than the thought of losing them (seriously, I have nightmares about it). That said, I totally understand that sometimes those are links you need to sever, or they get severed for you, and you need to find that connection elsewhere. I absolutely have people I consider family who aren't related to me. Your family are the people who accept you no matter who you are. Sometimes those are the people you grew up with; sometimes you have to work harder to find them

Congrats Danielle on a full year as an official Thumb! You've even accomplished the crowning achievement of a true Thumb: leaving for another city, breaking everyone's hearts!

Also true, although that section is probably my least favourite part of that book. Not that it's bad, I just like the earlier stuff more.

I am pumped for this game. All hail the triumphant return of full-motion video.

MBMBAM is the kind of show that I like to come back to every once in a while, but I find it tough to keep up with weekly or to binge on. Which is fine. I should check out the Adventure Zone, though. I hear that's really good.

I'll add Race Rebels to that list.

Oh yeah, I think that's supposed to read creepy. This show is not afraid to get into weird emotional territory.

Official Giant Bomb Thread Mostly for Complaining About Dan
tberton replied to tegan's topic in Idle Banter
I think there were definitely times when both those podcasts entered that territory and it was when the hosts were most self-consciously playing a character. This was more prevalent on 1UP Yours, but showed up on GFW as well, usually with Shawn. But the moments when they were just honestly being themselves were usually pretty good. Man, 1UP had a pretty great stable of podcasts back in the day.- 1367 replies

How much have you watched?

This last week of Steven Universe episodes has been so good. I'd say "unbelievably good" but given the rest of the show up to this point, I totally believe. This is a whole cast and crew working at the top of their game and it's great.

Idle Thumbs 215: Flirtation & Procreation
tberton replied to Chris's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I pretty sure I always heard 3 different voices, but it took me a while to remember who's name belonged to which voice. -
You should watch Steven Universe.

Oh, I wasn't trying to imply that it would be a rip-off. How to Train Your Dragon (which I also love) is basically The Iron Giant, anyway.

Idle Thumbs 215: Flirtation & Procreation
tberton replied to Chris's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
How could you guys have forgotten Episode 151: A Fascinating Experience? Also, Chris, you'll be interested to know that XCOM 2 will most likely not be launching with controller support. It will probably get it later, but Firaxis has said they're not prioritizing it right now. -
Along those lines, my prediction for the setup of this game is that the Birddog's species is hated and feared by the local populace. The manage to wipe them all out, except this one infant, born right after the attack, its mother dying in childbirth (or maybe it comes from an egg? unclear). It imprints on your character, thinking you're its mother. So basically How to Train Your Dragon.

That music makes me really hope that this game has a Firefly flavour. I want a space smuggler RPG.
