  1. The benefit that Titanfall had, and the benefit of the cloud in general, is that a server was spun up on demand when there was a match to play. This makes the server infrastructure expandable and, more importantly over the life of the game, contactable. So older games don't cost as much to maintain the server infrastructure for the few people left playing.
  2. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

You can run from them in every non-advanced mission they show up in, except one, which they make pretty clear in the mission text.
  3. I Had A Random Thought...

I can't imagine how difficult it would be to teach children math.
  4. HOWL O'WEEN (Halloween)

Hmm, I like the idea of doing the Exorcist. A screening of that at college was one of the first dates with my wife, so it would be extra special.
  5. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

i started doing regular sideops as OSP, that's kept things fun for a while.
  6. Interesting, they mention cloud computing in their little statement, so I guess they're going to try and put Havok up in the cloud? That could be cool.
  7. I Had A Random Thought...

    They are counting up from 12 to 32 by first moving up to the nearest 5, then counting in 5s and 10s (based on that grouping of 5 thing off of Zeus's daughter's homework) until they get near 32, then counting the last 2. Edit: Extending out to a larger number might make more sense. Taking, Zeus's numbers 2378-1357 1357 + 3 = 1360 1360 + 40 = 1400 1400+ 900 = 2300 2300 + 70 = 2370 2370 + 8 = 2378 2378-1357 = 3 + 40 + 900 + 70 + 8 Then it's regular addition from there. I also might have skipped a few steps in between, but you get the general gist.
  8. HOWL O'WEEN (Halloween)

I think Dead Alive might be a little too much for our crowd. I was also trying to think of the best zombie movie to pair with Shaun of the Dead. The obvious choice (from the title) is Dawn of the Dead, but from what I recall about those movies they aren't really that much the same. The part I enjoyed about the Dracula pairing from last year is seeing how Leslie Nielsen's performance (and much of the script writing as well) was directly copying from the original movie. It made so many odd choices in Dracula: Dead and Loving it (unpopular Mel Brooks film, but one of my favorites) make sense.
  9. I Had A Random Thought...

I guess I just don't really understand because math is my thing, but the old way (taking the more difficult form of your question, 32 - 13, breaks down like this: 32 = 30 + 2 & 13 = 10 + 3 (basic number construction) 32 = 20 + 12 (carry the one) 20 - 10 = 10 (subtract the tens) 12 - 3 = 9 (subtract the ones) Answer = 10 + 9 = 19 So there is an underlying process going on there. It might not be taught very well, but there is a pattern there, and it feels like it extends to larger numbers a lot better. Edit: Not that I'm against teaching the new way. I think that teaching things in as many different ways as possible is a plus. I just don't think we should just throw out the old way.
  10. Shadowrun Returns

Hairbrained Studios BattleTech Kickstarter is up! It's already blown through the goal. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/webeharebrained/battletech
  11. Idle Workouts

The only time I can get myself to exercise for exercise sake is right when I get up in the morning. Unfortunately, that really difficult to do when I'm in a depressive swing, so I've been less than successful.
  12. I Had A Random Thought...

I was lucky enough to have teachers for history that assigned essay questions, so there was at least some critical thinking involved. But the class that had the most memorization of any class I ever took was second year (organic) chemistry. You just have to know how to name all these molecules, and all these standard reactions, and you just have to memorize them all. I scored in the 90% percentile on the ACS test at the end of the year, so I guess I'm good at memorizing things.
  13. HOWL O'WEEN (Halloween)

I think I'm going to finally give up trying to throw a party at my place this year and just go find a bar to invade, then maybe a small film party the weekend after since that was so much fun last year. Anyone have any ideas of a pair of "Older original film contrasted with newer spoof" such as watching Frankenstein and Young Frankenstein, followed by Dracula and Dracula: Dead and Loving it?
  14. Killing Floor 2

I haven't played since it first hit early access. We have one friend in our crew that's Killing Floor nuts, but he's on the path to getting married so he hasn't been on much.
  15. Star Citizen

Wow, that's a heck of a response from Chris. It kinda seems undignified really, but I can understand why he'd be frustrated so I'll give him a pass.
  16. Valkyria Chronicles

I think it was just a feature of that one map, it still being part of the tutorial and all. I literally stood directly in their path and they ran around me, to then turn around and take a shot. It has been much less so in future missions, but man I just finished a desert level where they were constantly spawning snipers every single round across a mostly empty desert area. I finally just had to roll my tank all the way across the level (I hate the tank) and sit right in the base killing the reinforcements every time they spawned.
  17. International Politics

Let's just say that sounds pretty familiar here in the US as well.
  18. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

Are you returning to Mother Base periodically, or just doing side missions one after another?
  19. I Had A Random Thought...

Nice, I might buy the Steam version, just to have another copy since my (work) iPad is getting full.
  20. "Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Skeevy as it was, it worked on my younger mind, I still remember that game and kinda want to try it just to know how bad it is.
  21. Recently completed video games

From their FAQ: So this would require about 50k for the best Bypassers. I guess since you're not on any sort of trace, power of your machine doesn't matter so much. But then I read a lot of complaints of people trying bank hacking and getting caught, so I wonder if it's a bit more complicated than this.
  22. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

I think ithe diamonds and the target practice are in service of trying to get you to explore Mother Base, which actually helps a lot if you plan on getting into the FOB invasion game. To those people who haven't been getting their new missions in the second half of the game, remember that some of them are triggered by cut scenes that you get when returning to Mother Base, so don't forget to return and take a shower between every few missions/side-ops. Edit: Also, replaying old missions counts as spending time as well, so you can always go back and try to get a blueprint, specialist, or secondary goal you missed on an old mission.
  23. I don't care about GOTY, but I love the Giant Bomb awards discussion podcasts they put out. It's less important to me who gets number one and more about hearing people argue for the games they love.
  24. Recently completed video games

There's a lot of depth there, but none of it is communicated directly by the game and, with such a huge price of failure, it doesn't really encourage exploration either. It's like a school teacher encouraging you to sound out a word using phonics, then rapping you on the knuckles with a ruler every time you get it wrong.
  25. Sports

I have friends with season tickets, and I bought the MLS streaming pass, and have been too exactly three games this season, two of which have turned real ugly. Also, it wasn't that long ago that I'd watch every single Seahawks game, and this year I forgot they had started playing. I guess Sports just doesn't do it for me anymore.
