Ouran Boast Club - Planning an Anime Podcast
tegan replied to Gormongous's topic in Movies & Television
It's really hard to get right and is a pretty important part of western animation, but I imagine it's way easier to flub in Japanese where the language seems to have a much more strict, predictable rhythm. Plus there was a precedent of manga characters doing all of their expression through their eyes with relatively small mouths for years before animation hit Japanese TV. See, this kind of discussion is why I actually would like to be on this thing. As and aside, my anatomy teacher hated anime because it led to year after year of students who didn't know how to draw a damn nose, which is reasoning I can get behind. -

Yeah, I spent the better part of my life trying to break into animation before deciding it wasn't for me, and anime was hugely looked down on by my college professors for reasons that generally boiled down to its cost-cutting techniques, which is funny since American TV animation was techniques for cutting costs until right around the time the Disney Afternoon rolled around. Regardless, though, my animator brain still primarily divides Eastern and Western animation by its lip-sync. -

I suggest Mouth Flaps (or Lip Flaps). Love this thread title though. -

I don't have a microphone and I'm uncomfortable with my voice besides, but I'll at least listen, and I'd be interested in doing a guest spot somewhere in the future if it ever becomes feasible. I'm mostly into vintage manga, which I feel could be a useful knowledge base. -
I haven't seen Death Parade yet, but the original Death Billiards short felt downright Satoshi Kon-esque.

GUYS I JUST HAD THE GREATEST THOUGHT WHAT IF CHRIS PRATT IS HIMSELF A CLONE OF JEFF GOLDBLUM WITH FROG DNA post-credits scene is him turning to the camera and saying "life finds a way. awrehehehaHAHAhaha"

Also keep in mind that Fire Emblem was generally considered the first good game on the 3DS. It came out way back when nobody was buying the damn thing and people were convinced it was the new Virtual Boy. There's a much, much larger audience for this new one.

Idle Thumbs 204: The Reader's Pleasure
tegan replied to Chris's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Confession time: I actually tried to make a functioning Cities Skylines map out of Nick Breckon a while back, but couldn't get it to work properly because all the photos of him out there are very low-res and high-contrast. It would have been called Cape Breckon Island, for what it's worth. -
The Rosalina situation was made especially stupid by that one guy who bought up thousands of them specifically so that no one else could have them. I wonder how Jigglypuff's gonna be handled in Canada, since Target's shutting down here.

I have good news and bad news.

The Fire Emblem split doesn't happen until six chapters into the game and they didn't mention the multiple boxed copies thing at all in the NA video. I expect that the campaign you don't choose will just be DLC in the NA version.

So BoI:R is coming to Xbox One, new 3DS and Wii U, with some amazing deliberate asinine changes to the Nintendo versions that I had to check multiple sources on before I was sure it wasn't just an April Fool's joke. What really interested me about that update, though, was the accompanying crossed-off note on the bottom. I've always been kind of on the fence about Binding of Issac. The gameplay is pretty fun, but it was always pretty ambiguous whether the themes it chose to deal with were picked because there was actual commentary to be made or if they were just trying to be deliberately offensive. Seeing the note and how badly it smacks of "SJWs takin' away our games" leads me to believe it's probably the latter and, if that's the case, very likely not really worth my time.

Idle Thumbs 204: The Reader's Pleasure
tegan replied to Chris's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I love that none of the Thumbs realized that Two Rooms And A Boom is a game that they had already played and talked about mere months ago. Oh, and regarding western religious imagery in Japanese pop culture: I'm sure that there's an interesting discussion to be had regarding western influence on Japan and the growth of Christianity in that region over the past half-century or so etc etc; but it is astonishing how much of that can be directly traced back to the massively influential 1995 anime Neon Genesis Evangelion, which was deliberately given extremely strong religious imagery solely because the director thought it looked cool. It's everywhere in that show and all of it is 100% meaningless. -
So allegedly that Binding of Isaac thing isn't a joke. The game really is coming to Wii U and New 3DS (only New, not the olds ones or the 2DS) with those changes, and coming to Xbox One untouched.

Oh, also, I love that Nintendo is making a zombie invasion shooter in the most Nintendo-ass way possible. Also, I'm sure I'll buy it, but that weird paid version of Streetpass Plaza was very ill-defined.

Additional props for patching Code Name STEAM to fix what is apparently the worst part of it.

It's over! Highlights: SMTxFE still exists and looks amazing I still hate Yoshi, but I want one of those yarn amiibos Smash character voting is going to be a clusterfuck. Goku confirmed DS and N64 games on Wii U! Finally! DK64 is a terrible game, but I'm kind of amazed they managed to get it rereleased an Animal Crossing game with NFC trading cards about interior design is basically everything I want out of life I can't believe they did a trailer for a difficulty level Splatoon looks pretty rad still. Now release it already About damn time we got Fatal Frame. It's perfect for Nintendo right now, since it's one of the only games actually improved by the gamepad and since everyone's into horror games right now.

For what it's worth, I have thus far sank 490 hours into that game and recently got back into playing it every day.
