Westboro Baptist Church founder Fred Phelps finally fucking dies

So as mentioned elsewhere, I'm building a MAME cabinet this summer. It's a project that I've been thinking about for several years now, and I think it's finally about time I did it. Right now I'm mostly focused on just getting it together, but sooner or later I'm gonna' have to start thinking about what to put on it, so I thought I'd use the opportunity to get an arcade game recommendation and discussion started. Also, I'm by myself 99% of the time and don't have many friends who are good at games. Right now I just want to build a one-player cabinet, but are there any really crazy two-player things I might miss out on if I do? PS: I've been saving that thread title for like a year.

I'm still having a problem with lists. If you preview or edit a post with a list, it'll get weird spaces or even double the number of bullets.

Glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. Also, best:

Is there anything more satisfying than cleaning something that hasn't been clean in months? Today I cleaned and put away all my dishes, did all my white and coloured laundry (doin' black tomorrow), and took out my garbage, which is stuff usually impeded by my depression.

I just realized that my original post in this thread had a typo that ruins the joke. Here it is again, fixed: So a baby seal walks into a club.

So for those who missed it today, some big anouncements: Pixar confirms they're working on Cars 3 (ugh) and The Incredibles 2 (woooo). I really hope they get Brad Bird on board. It just wouldn't be the same without him. Also revealed today: I'm a little wary (I've never been much of a Blue Sky fan), but they absolutely nailed the look of the comics and they're going so far as to use archival recordings of the late Bill Melendez rather than trying to find someone to fill the unfillable roles of Snoopy and Woodstock.

Assuming Google gave me the right Euro-CAD conversion rate, that GBC is a steal. I can see maybe finding a cheaper one at a garage sale or something, but they usually go for way more on eBay or in specialty shops, at least around here.

I can just plug in a USB controller if I really want to do two players, you know. Or even better, buy or make a USB fight stick later on. Here's a sample of things I'm considering putting on it, either through MAME, other emulators, or just installed directly: The Simpsons, X-Men, Donkey Kong (though I think this might require a 4-way stick) Mr Driller, Space Invaders 95, Sexy Parodius, Dig Dug, Neo Mr Do, Metal Slug, Butasan, ChuChu Rocket, Spelunky Classic, Pac-Man CE DX+, Super Hexagon. Maybe even put some DOS games on there too if I can get them to run properly in that environment... If this works out, then someday I might make a second one with a racing wheel so that I can play some sick 90s arcade racers.

I might build a cheap mini PC, but in any case I don't want to have to buy a good graphics card for just one game (that I already own on PS3, Vita, and PC).

8-way. From what I gather 4-way's only really useful in a few cases. The fog that the ghost and restless dead levels summon used to cause slowdown in my desktop with my old graphics card. I'm thinking of using the guts from my old laptop, which is even older than my desktop.

I want to keep it simple, but I've actually been thinking of adding some low-spec modern arcade-style games like Pac-Man CE DX+ and Super Hexagon. Spelunky HD wouldn't run, but maybe original Spelunky would.

Charmander can't learn Flash! ...Though Bulbasaur can for some reason.

The Pokémon anime has been consistently airing a new episode every single week for the last seventeen years. You are entering a dark place, my friend.

Please. It's a UNIX system.

So around this time every year I entertain the notion of building a MAME cabinet. It always happens, but this time I've found cabinet plans that I like, I've worked out the logistics of modifying it to suit my needs; I've bookmarked places where I can buy cheap sheets of acrylic 'cause I'm too classy for plywood, I'm watching Youtube tutorials on how to cut and bend sheets of the stuff, I'm mentally figuring out how much of my old laptop I can salvage for parts and I'm staking out the local makerspace and I know what a dustwasher is and I'm asking a friend if he owns a tablesaw and GOD DAMN. WE ARE DOING THIS. WE ARE MAKING THIS HAPPEN. ...The plan I have in mind is a modified one of these, incidentally. It's meant to be cut from a single sheet of plywood, but I'm gonna' do it from larger pieces of acrylic so that I can have the arms holding the controls actually be part of the sides instead of being awkwardly bolted on.

Monsters Inc is a film about a little wiry guy and a big hairy guy who share an apartment* together in a gentrified neighbourhood. They spend all day every day coming out of closets and have to eventually have to go through a ton of shit in order to get a baby girl into their custody, which everyone else in their world thinks will destroy civilization as they know it. *with seemingly only a single queen-sized bed, I might add

I liked Monsters U a lot when I first saw it, but the longer I let it sit the less I remember enjoying it. Kind of the opposite of Drive, which I hated in the moment but retroactively enjoyed. I agree on the cabin moment, though. That was the highlight of the film for me. The librarian was pretty great too. Really, Monsters Inc. was kind of middling for Pixar and only really stands out to me for being the gayest of Pixar movies.
