Half of what I love about games like Journey, Gone Home, and Attack of the Friday Monsters is that it's so much more rewarding to me to experience a complete narrative in one sitting than to have to partition it out over several weeks.

Idle Thumbs 152: Piercing the Fourth Dimension
tegan replied to Chris's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
So I've been thinking about what terms would go on the Idle Thumbs banned phrases list. "bespoke" "solid two count" "gross" -
And Futurama and Dark Cloud 2 and Avatar etc etc etc. I just picked four that I felt best covered the full spectrum of nerdery.

This one's always been my favourite:

Holy shit, this episode of Steven Universe. gotta go fast

You know, we're all missing the obvious answer here.

I don't hear nearly as much buzz around him as other nerd icons like Joss Whedon or Kevin Conroy or what have you.

Aw, poop! I totally remember hearing that part and just never clued in. By the way, you guys have mentioned Italian Spiderman multiple times. If you haven't seen it before, you should totally watch some of the Japanese Spider-Man TV series from the seventies, which is a big part of what Italian Spiderman is meant to be parodying. It's exactly as ridiculous as Italian Spiderman, but entirely self-serious. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jPX-FX0KStE Marvel actually still owns the rights to this version of the character and recently mentioned that they intend to use him in an upcoming Spider-Man comic, which is the best thing.

It's really sort of amazing that Hamill's not some sort of nerd deity; considering that he's been in Star Wars, Batman, Adventure Time, and multiple Studio Ghibli films.

By the way, where did the episode title come from? I've listened to the episode four times now and I must be tuning out around that time or something. I thought it might have something to do with the Spelunky violators that Chris mentioned wanting to make with Olly during one of his daily streams.

Any given Metroid game is 99% Samus just murdering local wildlife and then blowing up a planet afterward. Everyone saves the Etecoons and the Dachora in Super Metroid, but that's four animals from a planet of billions.

I went to the comic shop for Free Comic Book Day! I got some manga I've been meaning to read for 40% off, plus got the free Bongo Comics issue and the one about the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund. I wanted to get the Boom Studios one too, but it was all gone. The lineup went all the way up to the second floor (and apparently looped back down to the ground floor earlier this morning), so I was in line for a good long while. Me and the guy next to me chatted it up about Ghost Rider, Lumberjanes, and how Captain Marvel sucks now that he's called Shazam and has lightning powers.

I don't have anything to contribute at the moment, but Geriatrix: A Cyberpunk Novel for Old People is among my favourite pieces of fiction on the internet.

Guh, so beautiful.

A whole boatload of stuff's on for five bucks a pop in another PSN flash sale this weekend.

Hilarious word choice aside, this game is so damn pretty on the Vita's nice big OLED screen.

The Summer Wars and FMA dubs were pretty good. I think the biggest frustration I ever had concerning a language barrier in games was in the original Wii version of Muramasa. All of the spoken Japanese was translated into dialogue boxes, but rather than a proper translation, it was always just the general gist of whatever the character was saying. Spoken dialogue could continue for a minute or more while the translation showed only a single sentence, and it infuriated me that I was very obviously missing most of what was being said. The Vita version has a new translation, but I don't know if it's actually more accurate to the original script or not.

There's a book by Ian Bogost about Atari development called Racing the Beam that the Thumbs would probably enjoy a lot. It really puts a lot of terrible Atari games into perspective when you realize that the machine was only ever designed to render Pong and that virtually everything released for the system was based on clever hacks and loopholes.

I got the Adventure Time 2014 Annual today. It's about baby versions of Fionna and Cake, and it's super adorbs.

All-New Ghost Rider continues to be surprisingly, suspiciously good.

You guys gotta' stream some of that Pikmin 3 experience. Use the opportunity to try some of the asymmetrical multiplayer stuff in Nintendo Land, too.
