Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.

The PC port of SR2 is notoriously bad. -
That sounds rad. Are you an astrophysicist?
-
It's better on replays, because you know how to work around the bad part(s) (which is the mechanics). Be a biotic, play on easy and go nuts. All the things that are bad about it were bad in 2007 too.

I keep coming back to Q3 trickjumping year after year. I don't think there has ever been a game with as many interesting mechanics that are bugs. This is a fairly hard strafe jump lane that I finished last night, the hardest one I've done in a couple of years. It's super satisfying when you finally get it.

I've had it with cords breaking, so now I use a pair of headphones where the cord is detachable on both ends. They were pricey but I figure it'll pay off in the long run. I've tried that and it helps, but they're generally stiff enough that the cord breaks eventually anyway,

Idle Thumbs 196: Ode on a Grecian Hat Sale
eot replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I'm pretty sure you can't turn off Steam achievement notifications without disabling the entire Steam overlay. It really bugs me, I've looked for that option a ton of times. Maybe they've added it since I last checked but I doubt it. -
I played through the first one (Escape Goat) last week and it also had a few levels that seemingly out of nowhere had Meat Boy levels of platforming challenge. It felt out of place.

Ah, that's annyoing. I wonder if it's an oversight or if it's meant to be a secret since there's another way out of there (back through the large lava room). I never used the x-ray scope much myself, it's a bit cumbersome to select and use constantly, so I guess I just tried going through that wall.

I learned the Kanji for potato the other day

Potato mashers always leave small lumps of potato. With a ricer you can be sure that everything's properly mashed. They're also quicker and easier to use I find.
-
Hey now, plain boiled potatoes can be amazing. Depends a lot on the kind though.
-
I started my master's thesis project today, which is equal parts scary and exciting.
-
Boil potatoes, cut them into small cubes and fry on low/med heat for close to an hour and you get a delicious crunchiness. A bit tedious though, because you need to attend to them that whole time.

Yeah, you need the super missiles to destroy that sneaky wall that leads to Kraid. If you miss the Brinstar map room you can easily get stuck there, as there's nothing indicating that particular wall is destroyable other than the revealed map showing an unexplored area beyond it and there's no way for a first time player to backtrack to the map room.
-
The boss fights are what I like the least about Super Metroid. Particularly Kraid, I can never do that fight without getting hit a ton.

I'd have been more surprised if he did know who Jane Austen was.

I catch myself doing the same thing. For a while I also had a semicolon phase; I wanted to get better at using them. Another thing I overuse is "but"; it's hard not to!
-
If you let the game sit on the title screen for a while it goes into a demo mode that shows off a lot of those things.

Haha, I guess Maridia is confusing. If you're in the room I'm thinking of (it's cramped and the water only goes halfway up to the ceiling) you can exit through the quicksand on the floor in the left part of the room. I'll try to explain where you need to go: Grapple across the large room like you did before. Go through the door into the pink area, bomb the floor and jump down. Then continue right through the next door and power bomb the floor. Now you should be in the room above the one you were trapped in. Use the grappling hook (or learn to wall jump ) to reach the upper level, then make your way left and exit through the door in the roof. If you're in the right area you'll see a bunch of trapped metroids. Jump up to the platform on the right, shoot the breakable wall, fall down through the collapsing tiles, shoot out two more walls and drop down to the floor. You'll have another breakable wall on each side, shoot both then go as far left as you can. Run right, activate your speed booster, and smash the tiles that are in your way. How to wall jump (not necessary, but fun): Jump towards a wall (so you spin), and at the apex (or slightly before) of your jump, hold the d-pad in the direction of the wall, then quickly reverse the direction and jump a split second after. You'll need to change direction again to get back to the wall of course.

You're not done with Maridia. See the unfilled (black) square in the middle/left of your map? This one: http://i.imgur.com/flGbz9t.png It's not empty, you need to go there and continue right. You get there from the corridor to the left, on the same horizontal plane, that you've already explored. Also, you're missing out by playing with the sound off!

It doesn't sound like you're done with Maridia. How to know if you've beaten Maridia

There's generally two specific things that people get stuck on, which suit do you have and what areas have you explored? If you have the gravity suit:

I agree that Dwarf Fortress is unmissable in some sense, but most people wouldn't enjoy it. All of my favourite games are unmissable in that same sense. I don't want to just list my favourite games though. Here are the ones I think everyone can and should play: VVVVVV - One of the purest expressions of the fun of games that isn't a single screen game (like Tetris or Pac-Man). The simplicity and forgiving checkpointing makes it a game anyone can play, and the soundtrack is sublime. Yes, it's definitely a game everyone should try. Super Metroid - As someone who came to this game very late I think it has a timeless quality to it. 20 years from now it will still be an amazing game in a way that very few other games will (I think Quake III is another one that has that timeless quality). It holds up in a way that most classic games from that era don't, LttP in particular. Pure design genius. Dark Souls - I'd sound like a broken record talking about it more, but this is a game I'll never stop evangalizing. I wish the thumb's crew had played it.
