  1. [RELEASE] Business Guys On Planes

Yeah, I couldn't figure out how to use the keyboard controls. Felt good once I plugged in a controller, but you might want to show the controls in the main menu or when you're on the tarmac. Also I never really got how to reduce the jostlemeter...flying straight didn't seem to consistently lower it. I think I got to around 150 points or so and I really enjoyed watching business guys try to keep their balance.
  2. [RELEASE] Another Chill Hell

The movement and game feel of getting around in such a weird physics environment felt good, which seems like it'd be tough to get right, and the anime permeates and ties it together. It wasn't really clear how to choose what blocks to target to me though? It mostly seemed to work pretty well and do I wanted but I wasn't sure.
  3. [Release] The Sad Story of a Modern Idiot

Great use of DG, and the dissonance of the game box and game itself was funny every time I lost and restarted. And that selfie mechanic system works better than it has any right to in adding some challenge to the game. I did also find it kind of hard to control; it mighta helped to be on a skateboard or somethin that sticks out ahead of you so you can tell where you're pointed. Also obviously the vape juice is cherry flavored right?
  4. [v2 - The Dab Update] The Eyes of Cheatin Hitman

This is looking great so far, that intro video is really impressive
  5. Total Warhammer

Uh so this is maybe a dumb question but...I'm pretty far into a Dwarf campaign, have killed all the orcs and chaos (I believe, there might be another army running around in the fog of war to the north), but I don't know how to win? I can't find any listing of victory conditions anywhere, online or in-game. I own the vast majority of the holds I can capture, and have no more quests to do...what am I missing here? edit: also to make this post current or relevant or whatever....Wood Elves are out? I haven't played them but coworkers have been saying their units are too weak compared to the other races. double edit: ok I think the only piece I was missing was I needed to clear out the Book of Grudges. But I didn't figure that out until I'd completely annihilated every other faction, so this ended up being an extremely exhausting ~15 hour, 400 turn campaign.
  6. Idle Thumbs 293: Warmest Greetings

Whoaaaa Catacombs of Solaris is cool. I will definitely second Chris' recommendation for it. Here's a link to it, probably don't watch the trailer on it before playing: https://ianmaclarty.itch.io/catacombs-of-solaris
  7. The Big VR Thread

If you're talking about the Valve lab thing, I found that I kept bumping the controllers together trying to knock arrows (I did really enjoy it though!). I think the NVidia VR Funhouse thing did a good job with bow/arrows too; their solution was I think you hold arrows by the end, so your hand is naturally a little further back and doesn't collide. Also, I finally got to play some SUPERHOT VR and hoooly shit that's great. edit: I finished superhot while playing a Bach concerto and it was a transcendent experience that I highly recommend. At first I thought needing to wiggle controllers occasionally to advance time was sort of awkward, but you can use it as an opportunity to dance a little bit and the whole thing flows really delightfully. After repeating a section a few times, you've choreographed a little murder ballet and it feels awesome.

Funny thing about Kingspray, they announced they were gonna be Oculus exclusive a while back, so someone made a knockoff called Vivespray (which I bought and thought was OK). Then I checked the store yesterday and it seems like they're on Oculus and Touch, and have a way higher quality app than Vivespray. Whoops!
  9. The Big VR Thread

Oh neat, I hadn't seen quite what Medium put out, so I assumed it was like Tiltbrush, but that looks like it a legitimate sculpt. That...really makes me wanna set the Touch that we have in the office up and throw our artist at it.
  10. The Big VR Thread

I apologize in advance, I'm gonna shill a tiny bit...I don't think a lot of people have the hardware yet, but if anyone has a Google Daydream, the game I've been working on just came out today and you should check it out https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.otherside.underworldoverlord (Also, I might have a couple keys, so if you PM me and I recognize your name from around here / the slack channel, I can probably give you a copy) ALSO I finally played Vanishing Realms (on the Vive) and it was...maybe the best VR action game I've played yet. Really polished, and it makes tons and tons of good decisions related to VR interactions and movement. I was worried about how an action game with teleporting movement would work, but they sort of force you to 'charge' up the teleports so you can't spam them in combat and block you from teleporting through enemies to exploit the instant movement.
  11. WJ4 Asset Sharing

Does anyone have a suggestion for a good way to post assets to share? Dropbox, I guess?
  12. Virtual Reality Development

oh yeah after putting them on my home Vive, I brought in a pack of em to work and put them on all our various headsets. It's a neccesity imo.
  13. Virtual Reality Development

I did a bunch more work on the bird flying arm flapping thing and made it more of a game. Thinking about it now though, I think it'd be way more satisfying to just build as a flight simulator. No explicit goals, just fly, and soak in the feeling of flying. I had been kinda envisioning a very small scale arm-powered Flappy Bird, but after playing it more and getting the feeling better I think anything that gets in between you and the feeling of flight is bad. This was something I kinda felt after playing Space Pirate Trainer...it feels amazing to go wild, cross your arms, dual wield sweet space guns, and it only hurts the experience to have to constantly stop and restart the game. Maybe my feelings on this will change when flying in VR has been around for longer, but for now, it still feels...I wanna say novel, but that kinda brings it down. I've dreamed of flying (like literally, dreams at night) my entire life and now I can do it...why bother trying to get a high score or complete a level, when I just wanna fuckin' SOAR.
  14. Virtual Reality Development

I made some stuff! Probably the biggest challenge I've been having is that the scene view in Unity doesn't at all accurately represent the scene when you pause, which makes debugging and positioning things really annoying. The physics on throwing/arm velocity is also a little strange...I found a couple decent solutions on this Stack Overflow answer, but I feel like I'm still not all the way there.
  15. Rimworld

The past couple days I have been deeeeep into Rimworld. It's a simulation game very (VERY) similar to Prison Architect, but instead of running a prison you build a space colony. There's a little less micro in terms of what you're building (ie, you don't need to build showers or worry about complicated security setups), and instead you're fighting off raiders in tactical combat and equipping your colonists with weapons/armor. Another cool addition is that events in game (severe weather, bandit raids, etc) are generated by an AI storyteller (the developer compares it to the Left 4 Dead Director) to keep things exciting. This is a screenshot from the first game where my colonists didn't die immediately. Most of the colonists died in a raider attack, and the final one dug a hole into this mysterious room behind where I was building my base. A robot centipede emerged, killed Zippy instantly, and burned down my colony. RIP Zippy It seems to be the work of one person (a former Irrational designer, Tynan Sylvester) and I've been really impressed by it so far. Now that I have a fairly advanced colony and I'm starting to get hit by larger attacks with long range weapons I'm finding some aspects of the combat frustrating, but I feel like I'm learning how to handle different challenges with each playthrough so it's staying interesting. In particular, trying to handle mortars and snipers has been a challenge. I suspect that if I had bought some long range weapons and spent some time training a soldier up by hunting I'd be fine, but my current colony is on the verge of collapse after fighting off first a large group (8ish people with 2 mortars), immediately followed by a centipede and 2 scythers. Too many people have injuries, and we're not really able to harvest food fast enough while maintaining defenses, so I think the next big attack will probably wipe out my colony. Anyone else playing this? I haven't really heard anything about it, I discovered it 'cause I saw Rocket (the DayZ guy) tweet about it and investigated so I'm curious if other folks are digging this game as much as I am. http://rimworldgame.com/
  16. Extra Life

Does anyone else around here take part in Extra Life? This'll be my 4th year and I haven't seen anyone post about it, but I figure there must be a few other folks around who participate. Post your donation link, and talk a bit about what you're gonna be playing on November 7th! As for me, this year I'll be doing something a little different; I'm planning on doing a 24 hour solo game jam, where I'll base my game around whatever idea gets the most money donated towards it. And then attempt to incorporate any other ideas people suggest in their donation comments that'll fit. Here's my page, which has a little more info on my plan and some pictures from my previous years. WHAT IS EXTRA LIFE Extra Life is a charity event run every fall where people do a 24 hour gaming marathon to raise money for children's hospitals. 100% of money raised goes directly to the Children's Miracle Network hospital of the players choice. Some big sites like Giantbomb, Geek and Sundry, and Rooster Teeth are gonna do 24 hour (or longer) streams, and a bunch of game studios participate as well. There are a lot of other gaming-adjacent charities that have popped up over the years that have felt questionable to me, but Extra Life feels it pretty directly goes toward helping folks who need it. I like that they let you choose which hospital you play for, so you can feel like you're making an impact on local kids and helping out your community. It's also just a fun, low impact way of doing something good with my hours of gaming once a year. If that explanation didn't do it for you, check out their FAQ. Anyway, check it out, pitch a few bucks in to someone you know who's participating, or just watch the gianbomb stream on the 7th and hang out with me in slack until I pass out at 6am!
  17. Extra Life

Welp it's that time again, time for a bunch of people to play video games and whatnot to raise money for childrens hospitals. I'm participating again, building VR stuff for 24 hours straight (and taking requests for what to make!). But this year, in addition to raising money for Boston Children's Hospital, I'll be making a donation to Black Girls Code for every donation I receive, so I hope some folks will take a sec and make a donation http://www.extra-life.org/participant/dinosaursssssss/ And if anyone else out there is Extra Lifin', please post your donation link and if you're streaming, a link to that!
  18. Rimworld

I 100% agree that the developers response to this ('all bi men are gay' etc) is gross and indefensible, buuut I also think the reporting on this was extremely dishonest. All the code presented in the article comes from decompiling the game, which would NOT show comments or variable names. The only thing the writer says about this is: So they're presenting some of the code as though it came directly from the developer, including comments with forward slashes, implying that they were actually present in the source, which they are not. Likewise, the writer presents variable names as though they were named as such in code, which wouldn't be readable after decompiling. edit: To be clear, I don't necessarily think this was done maliciously as a hit-piece or whatever the developer suggested, but it is sloppy and should DEFINITELY be noted in the article.
  19. The Big VR Thread

I have heard that Drive Club specifically looks really blurry...my guess is it's because of performance issues. Because everything needs to be rendered twice, and needs to run smoothly to prevent any vr sickness, the resolution has probably been dropped and anti-aliasing is also probably off (or lower than it'd normally be).
  20. The Big VR Thread

Instead of just hijacking this thread I should probably make a thread in the game dev forum and post my learnings / gifs and take requests.

For reference, here're the old diversifiers: Wiz Jam '16 Winter Wiz Jam '15
  23. The Big VR Thread

I ended up taking a shot at building a tiny city and off the bat it seemed to work a lot better; physics was definitely a little weird, but it was still a LOT easier than trying to correctly scale the player and move the camera/hands to the correct places as you grew. I also had a friend play around a bit as well and she got nauseous from standing in place and scaling up, I think probably fixed-size mini cities to stomp around in is the way I'll go. Regardless, the night ended with her crawling around on the floor knocking buildings over and throwing a skyscraper sized hot dog at the town so I think it was a success.
  24. The Big VR Thread

I just took a stab at adding the ability to scale my size up during gameplay and couldn't get the math right, so I kept ended up with giant or tiny hands...Constructing a miniature scene to stomp around woulda been a lot faster I think, I'll probably give that a shot over the weekend.
  25. The Big VR Thread

It seems weird to me that MS announced this vr headset before hololens got fully released, those things have been kicking around for a while now.
