  1. After seeing a couple of "My cat is interested in the Witness" tweets and hearing the discussion about how there's no player body/hands in the game, this vision immediately appeared in my brain.
  2. wrong thread

my new DK OC WC: Wrongkey Wrong
  3. wrong thread

Otherwise this will soon be a mega wrong thread!
  4. One week before the shortest day of the year, the Wizard sneaks into a hidden underground temple in search of arcane wisdom and cosmic visions... I'm making a 2D exploration platformer, there's going to be somekind of action happening too so it's overall pretty Metroidy. Here's a wip of the game world (this is 25% of the actual size): The world is a single continuous space (one room in gamemaker), here's a gif (featuring the Wizard from the last jam) showing how the view movement changes in different sized areas. It would be nicer if the view would slide smoothly into the next position but this is good enough for now. For the platforming movement/collisions I'm using code by Zack Bell so the game feel is really nice but I hope I don't accidentally break anything as his code is way beyond my very basic programming skills.
  5. That is really nice to hear, I spent most of the time drawing and designing the world so all the action/progression stuff ended up being really half-baked (or maybe some weird dough with ingredients missing). I uploaded a new version of the game with some small tweaks and fixes: http://atteo.itch.io/dws And here's the full final/current map:
  6. Someone made a great picture of Jeff Gerstmann in a Rez suit in The Matrix: Here's the Polygon Frog Fractions 2 article ...and for more ARGy goodness, check out the Binding of Isaac Afterbirth's wild secret hunt. I love to put links behind text!
  7. Here it is http://atteo.itch.io/dws , like my last Wizard Jam project: too big idea for a jam, no sound and full of rushed design - buut you can play through it and I had fun making it. You can fully play it only with a controller for now (X/square - shoot magic, R1 - Leave hat/Teleport) so I'm going to fix the keyboard controls at least and then think about if I'd like to continue developing it.
  8. Thanks thanks! I've done a lot of rethinking and redesigning (which means mainly playing Ducktales on emulator...) in this project but I'm sure I'll get something ready for the end of the jam. Here's some areas with final(ish) graphics.
  9. I'll write about the gameplay, design decisions and general inspirations sometime later (writing is hard!) but here's a summary of the story for now: The underground temple is a place where various beings go to sleep and have mystical visions. The Wizard is for some reason not invited so he secretly accesses the place and wanders around gathering glimpses of the visions floating in those dusty ancient halls.
  10. I hope Spaff's friend made music for Amiga cracktros because those were (at least sometimes) pretty cool.
  11. You can join the jam and eventually submit your game here: http://itch.io/jam/winter-wizard-jam edit: dibs is too fast
  12. Walking in a WINTER WIZARD JAM

All aboard the Hype Polar Express!
  13. I Had A Random Thought...

I had a random thought: What would the wizard chant sound like slowed down 20 times with Paul's Extreme Sound Stretch:
  14. Also quick googling reminded me of: Those are all licensed music, but really good and fitting.
  15. I really like that Kero Blaster, despite being a very traditional oldschool 2D platformer, has a strong personality of its own and is not just another Mario/Castlevania/Metroid homage.
  16. Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

I usually prize the mystery and confusion in BoI, but watching experienced players is an excellent way to get better and learn new stuff. Northernlion doesn't have the Cobalt skills (then again who does?) but he commentates his runs very well and actively and has a huuuge archive of runs on his Youtube channel.
  17. No Man's Sky

It is Rutger Hauer though, and sounds like it was recorded for the trailer. And hey, the new trailer shows a pack of Big Dogs so everything is great so far.
  18. Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

So much new stuff, yay! I won't be looking at streams or wikis for some time so I was worried I wouldn't find the new secret mega boss, but it was pretty straightforward. Afterbirth seems to also have some changes to old stuff : I noticed Book of Belial doesn't give you Devil rooms anymore but it is really nice that the Devil/Angel room after 'It Lives' is now a real Deal room (and not just a passage to next level)!
  19. Besides the frantic arcade action feel, Nuclear Throne and Downwell actually share the same sound designer Joonas Turner. Downwell's palette collecting saga has a huge twist ending as the final palette -
  20. Hard sure is hard, but it's nice how it changes things up. There's more pressure from the top so upgrades that causes bullets to fly up feel much more important on hard.
  21. Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

Afterbirth is out today! I've played Isaac since the original came out, and still loving it. I even stubbornly grinded out the real platinum god this summer (#humblebrag). It's funny that when a lot of the criticism about BoI I see is "It's too obscure/doesn't explain things", I am now super excited to once again get totally baffled by the new stuff.
  22. Here's the combo rewards: 8 - 100 gems 15 - 100 gems, 1 charge 25 - 100 gems, 1 charge, 1 health Also the wall jumping is a nice semi secret thing - jump or bounce toward a wall (you do a spinning jump, shooting cancels it) and then press away from the wall and jump at the same time.
  23. Yeah, some kind of info screen about the kill combos, extra health meter and gem high would have been nice. Douglas Wilson wrote on Polygon what makes Downwell so special, and I agree with him how the power-up/weapon change combination is an interesting addition to the game: "I love these kinds of moments, when a game forces you to choose the "least bad" option in a dire situation. The choice adds a dose of humor to the proceedings, as if the game itself is giving you the middle finger." Those pauses in the music are just part of Eirik Suhrke's quirky style.
