  1. I won't go into all the pros and cons but the one big thing for me is that I've opened up other people's pre-built PC's and found that the parts weren't what they thought they'd be. This could just be that they were confused about what they thought they were getting or the companies pulling a fast one (it's certainly not enough instances to make a call). Either way with the less glamour components often being non-brand too I'd rather avoid it. Also I already have a perfectly good case, power supply, etc, there's usually something that can be passed on to the next incarnation.
  2. Unity Tutorials

Thanks clyde, I realised afterwards that there are more suitable threads for sharing games so next time I'll do it there so as to not sidetrack this one.
  3. Unity Tutorials

I'd got it the wrong way around, I was trying to reset the camera when there was no input so it was 'input != 0' when it should have been 'input == 0'. I think I was confusing the input variables with the ones measuring current properties, so it the current rotation (or whatever) is anything other than 0 then do something. It was one of those things that's totally obvious but for some reason you look at it at the time and think "No that's fine, I wonder what's wrong"
  4. Unity Tutorials

This is what I've spent the last day and half or so on: http://www.bretteveleigh.co.uk/other/Glider_Prototype.rar It's stand alone because I tried a webgl build and it was pretty janky and normal web player is too much of a pain these days. I was playing Gone Home and really liked just gliding around the environment so I figured that'd be a good exercise to try. It's a lot rougher than I'd like, the biggest problem is limiting rotation in a way that doesn't feel harsh.
  5. Unity Tutorials

Edit, nevermind, I figured it out 5 seconds after posting...
  6. Listening to the E3 live shows, makes me think that Jeff hosting a late night style show with game industry people would be pretty rad. He's pretty good at getting interesting and silly conversations out of people in a notoriously tight lipped and PR controlled industry. Maybe I'm wrong though and it'd lose the magic if it was done every week.
  7. Unity Tutorials

    Cool, much appreciated
  8. Screenshots. Shots of your screen.

Sonic Ether mod? I love the juxtaposition of the super high fidelity water shader and the tiny pixelly textures Weeee!
  9. Unity Tutorials

The space shooter tutorial was fun, mostly after I'd finished it and decided to add some things. I tried the survival shooter one but it seemed a bit rushed and was skipping over a lot of what the code does, so I quit that one. I also tried a cooking with unity one but I didn't really get on with it, again I enjoyed modifying it though. I think I might just start making something and see how it goes, it's probably way too early but we'll see.
  10. The Dancing Thumb (aka: music recommendations)

That is some sweet metal. I afraid I'm too lazy to check bad through previous pages to see if these have been posted, pretty bloody rude I know. These are some of my current favourites:
  11. Life

I had to get a US tax number a few years back, there was a form I had to fill out and send to the embassy with my passport (or a copy, I have a feeling I sent the real thing) and that was it, I had to wait a while and they refused to give me any information about it, they just told me to wait. One day it eventually it turned up. In my case it was to make use of a treaty preventing double taxation but I could still have just said "ok tax me twice". Hopefully they accept some other form of ID because I don't see a solution unless you can persuade patreon to be flexible. Failing that maybe you know someone that could lend you the money to get through this process then pay them back when you receive the money?
  12. Mirrors Edge at E3

She doesn't kill is a bit of a technicality unless all of those goons have parachutes because she definitely knocked a dude out a window in the video
  13. Unity Tutorials

Thanks that is actually quite useful. One issue so far is versions, some of the tutorials are made for older versions of Unity and some things are different. With the space shooter for instance the way you access rigidbody components has changed but luckily unity has converted the 'done' versions so when I get compatibility issues I can just see what it did to update them. Of course I could just get the right version but I'd rather learn the newest methods if I can.
  14. Unity Tutorials

Thanks guys I'm starting to go through the roll a ball one and I'll move on to the space shooter afterwards. I do like it so far, it seems to be the perfect level of complexity for me, I just have to stop myself from typing while it's playing as I miss things that way
  15. Unity Tutorials

I don't think I've done any of the Unity tutorial from Unity, if I have it's been long enough that I'd have to re-do them I ran through all of the codecedemy tutorials on to JS and did all of the pure JS ones but then it was branching off into areas away from games and I sorta lost interest. This was a couple of years ago though. I've been using Playmaker (a visual scripting plugin) for a few years and that's given me a better understanding of the logic but no understanding of the structure or syntax. Also like others in the thread I'm not fond of video tutorials but I don't think I have a lot of choice. I guess I'll start doing the Unity3d.com ones.
  16. Unity Tutorials

Does anyone know if any of tutorials that are suitable for absolute beginners? Unity probably isn't the best place to start for learning to code but I know my way around it and can easily add non-code elements to projects but of course I'm open no non-unity tutorials, preferable C# though so I can easily transition to Unity.
  17. Game of Thrones (TV show)

Spoilers suck real bad but on the plus side the show is up to date with the books and even beyond on some arcs. It's I guess a tiny bit behind on some but nothing huge so now there's not really anything else that can be spoiled. As long as you watch the episodes as they come out of course, depending on when the next book comes out of course.
  18. Stealing

"Liberty" a curious word to use, it's not matter of rights and freedoms. Like a lot of things the situation like the one you mention comes down to being a decent person. Generally speaking you should respect the privacy of others, it may seem that privacy is instantly sacrificed in the online world but I see no reason why that should be true. You can wander into someone else's home in real life and start taking photos (assuming its not locked*) but you probably don't and that's probably because it's not acceptable. I guess it comes down to the old battle of privacy versus public interest in journalism. These online worlds have not let evolved social boundaries and a lot of people seem to think that because of that there isn't any that it's total free reign. I think that's partly also because when playing a game (and I'm not sure that's a good classification for Second Life) they're used to the boundaries being the 'rules' of the game and anything not covered by those rules is sort of martial law anarchistic zone. It's starting to happen though, although not entirely successfully. I was playing on a Minecraft server for a while and there were social rules which couldn't really be enforced beyond removing access to the server (man I wish people could be banished to the unexplored wilderness) and mostly it worked but it was a small server with a whitelist, most of the players vaguely knew each other from a forum, it would be a totally different situation with a group of randoms (although I'd love to do a study on that). It still wasn't entirely successful though, people had clearly signposted homes but someone still went around stealing other people's diamonds. Mostly nobody touched other people's stuff, because that would be a dick move. Sorry about getting sidetracked there, I find it an interesting area
  19. eReaders - What is everyone's thoughts?

SmZA, I totally understand your reasons, this is why I still have a keyboard Kindle and have almost no desire to upgrade. I haven't gone as far as you to go back to an old phone (because I need them wicked casts when out and about) but I dislike touchscreens for a number of the reasons you mentioned above but mostly because they're just a poor input system in the majority of situations.
  20. DISHONORED 2: MISS HONORED

Excellent work on the thread title.
  21. Sense8

I find it rather annoying, not because it's a crappy sound effect (which it is) but because of the conscious decision to include something that breaks immersion as part of an in-joke that stopped being funny many years ago. Anyway, I've watched a bit more of Sense8 and I'm getting on with it a lot more. The writing is rather clunky at times and the whole premise seems a tad hokey but I think I mostly like it because it's not all white middle class Americans, which is a refreshing change. I'll finish the season after I'm done with the new season of Orange Is The New Black, which is as always excellent.

  23. UK Thumbs

That's quite the list. I've lived in two of those and visited most of the others but I'm struggling to think of things Falmouth isn't far from the Eden Project which is pretty cool. There's loads of nice beaches in the area, Gyllyngvase the one that's sort of in Falmouth, is ok but quite small and naturally gets very busy (also the restaurant on the beach is super overpriced). Great Shakes is awesome, mmm Jaffa Cake milkshake. While you're in Newcastle you should wander down to the Sage, it's a very cool piece of architecture. I can't think of much to do in Newcastle though, I was too poor and working most of the time so didn't do much... If you like curry then Akbar's in York is great. If I think of anything else I'll let you know
  24. Steam Summer Sale Spendapalooza

I update my wishlist fairly regularly so I tend to stick to that for sales. That way I'm not tempted by things just because they're cheap.
  25. Steam Summer Sale Spendapalooza

That's about £6.50 so cheaper than Steam (£7.50) if you're in Britain, unless there's a crappy conversion by the payment handler.
