  1. Idle Explorers (Spelunky, um, thumbs)

For the first time, EVER, I made it to the city of gold. And I made it through the city of gold. And I got Olmec right to where I wanted him. And then I went back to fetch my shotgun, and in those extra 5 seconds... And then I tabbed out to type this, and the game crashed.
  2. I don't think i actually posted in this! Hello. http://steamcommunity.com/id/badfinger
  3. Aw man, I wish I'd had the presence of mind to screenshot the house of the guy honeypot trapping people in Elektro. It was an absolute murderbarn. It sucked to lose gear, it always sucks. But when you're not getting KoS within 2 minutes of spawn it's way more interesting on the coast.
  4. DayZ really isn't as incomprehensible as it's sometimes suggested. Yes there's some basic orienteering, but once you begin to learn the map that just becomes traversal. Hell in the standalone the inventory system is drag and drop! You can assign items to hotkeys! The depth is way more like an old-school RPG where you find out what things interact with other things as you go. There is a really cool learning curve though. The first challenge is the game itself, because you have to learn how to do things. Then it's the terrain, then it's the zombies, then the zombies stop being an issue, and it's people, and then it's how to deal with/exploit/avoid/help people. Actually the RPG thing is pretty apt. It's not abuse, I promise. If you get in a situation where people are genuinely interacting with you, you've already won. It might be tense, or stressful, but it's FUN. It's way more boring and annoying to just get shot. Don't even say hello, just unload? The worst, WORST way to play the game. It's way more interesting to get held up, ambushed, robbed, whatever. Sadly that's not happened to me very much. http://www.pcgamer.com/2014/01/06/the-best-dayz-videos-so-far-the-gentleman-bandit-heroic-high-fives-and-more/ These are half a dozen clips PC gamer found and they're cool stuff that can happen. I recommend checking them out, the longest one is only like 5-6 minutes. With that said, no of course it's not for everyone. I'm only writing it up because if you are interested but you think the game is a non-stop abuse simulator then I can promise that's not true. You can always avoid handcuffs, you can try and run away, or you can just log out. It's just way more interesting (to me) to see what happens. Sean - in the mod, a Hero skin totally did exist. You got it from having a really high Humanity score, which you can get from blood bagging other survivors, and maybe other things. Killing non-bandit survivors lowers your Humanity. http://dayz.gamepedia.com/Hero_skin Jake - I'm so upset with you for retracting your Customer statement, because the first one is 100% accurate. Too many years of customer service have borne that out time and time again. I remember years ago I applied for a job with Enterprise Rent-A-Car and the hiring manager asked me what I thought about the phrase. I did my best to explain that I believed that was absolutely not true, but the customer is always important. When they're not right, you need to do your best to explain, educate, apologize, whatever to help get them to the same frame of mind. I did not get the job.
  5. Oh my goodness Dotato Day is back! Sad about the Breckon, happy to have more Muir in my life. Sean - I think you're being somewhat unfair in your criticism of already established non-dota lomas. For you (and me), when we got into lomas there were already established retail games in the space. But before DOTA 2, LOL and HON were trying to do what you're talking about what you're now seeing in the patch notes - attach professional game development and make a retail product out of a mod. Those games were conceived and production begun back in 2007/2008, only a couple of years after DOTA became popular. They weren't trying to carve out a weird niche in the most popular game genre in the world, they were trying to be the first/best retail product to market and BE the genre. Also it's funny that DOTA 2 is literally recreating DOTA pixel for pixel to compete with THEM, when what I heard in your voice was something bordering on disgust for that (I could be wrong). I do agree that the next wave, Dawngate, Smite, HOTS, etc are trying to do a different thing from the original 3 and streamline/carve out their niche.
  6. I live on East Coast US, but I'm mostly available. To the last two posts, just hit me up on Steam and I'll probably say yes let's do it. e: and also if anyone wants to futz around in DayZ Mod or any of the other maps I'd do that too. They have a lot more variety and also explosions sometimes.
  7. Just to completely bombard this page with my posts, if anyone wants to play DayZ NOT on a Saturday I'm up for it. If people need basic gear or want to make weapon runs or just go get shot a bunch. Name's the same in the steam group.
  8. Map trick: if you are playing with a single monitor, shift tab in steam, open your browser and go to dayzdb.com. Open that map in the browser and you'll be ready to go without needing to alt tab.
  9. FYI if you get shot, stuff in your gear can get ruined. This has basically no impact on non-gun items aside from the aesthetic look of clothing, but it can ruin pistols, magnums, bullets, magazines, and attachments (if they are for sidearms or not on your gun). Because none of the guns have any description or status, be really careful if you're retrieving gear that your stuff actually works before you get caught in a firefight. They don't show a durability but they can be busted. I lost a magnum and a pistol with a rds after getting picked off by a hacker a couple of days ago. If bullets say they are "ruined", split them out. It's usually only one bullet that's ruined, and you can split them down until all but one are pristine and then recombine. You can't fire ruined ammunition. You also can't load ruined magazines by dragging and dropping, BUT if you leave your weapon unloaded, put it in your hands, and use the mousewheel command it will load and fire. I expect that won't last forever but for people who don't like finding new stuff after getting shot it'll get you around it.
  10. I knew I would eventually get the game, but I've finally broken down and did it. I had forgotten how satisfying the build of "I found a shirt. I found a shovel. I found a soda. I found a water bottle. I found a backpack! I found AN AXE." can be. Even just the discovery of the new interface stuff was cool. You don't have to middle mouse your way around the world quite so much. So I'm relatively kitted out, short of weapons, and just north of Berezino if anyone wants to meet up and hang out. I'm already in the Steam group. (Even as I write this, I realize I will probably be dead before anyone responds, if not reads) What sort of computer specs and game settings are people using? I know it's an Alpha and it's unoptimized, but right now even with almost every setting on low besides native monitor resolution it looks and runs like GARBAGE. I don't have the world's best computer, I5, 560 Ti and 8 gigs of ram, but I can run BF4 on normal/high settings without too much trouble and this chokes and wheezes. e: I think my issue was not setting the config files to read only, and every time I loaded back up DayZ kept trying to render literally a million objects. Also making sure ambient occlusion was off. So much better.
  11. Idle Explorers (Spelunky, um, thumbs)

Yes, although lately I've had a lot of difficulty with it. In today's run (pretty sure it was the daily) an exploding frog blew up immediately somewhere off screen and everyone came after me before I had even started setting up. Very sad.
  12. Assassin's Creed: Buccaneer

I loved this game. Amazing. I did almost all of the side content before being about halfway through the story. It was sort of funny to have the story show more and more things you can do when I'd been doing them for hours already, but I liked all the activities in any event. It was very cool to see historical pirate characters come together without really beating you over the head with it. I'd forgotten how cool that was. Did anyone actually win any of the legendary ship encounters? I have almost everything unlocked except the treasure chest ship upgrades (very irritating) and I don't even feel like I'm close. I still want to go back and do it, though.
  13. I saw this pop up in the group, but couldn't make it. I would love (love) to play with other dudes. I'll be looking out for other announcements. I should get back in to following the thread.
  14. Idle Thumbs 128: Dear Mom

It's the Zombie Mode for Blops 2.
  15. Tone Control is a Podcast!

As an exclusively car/headphones at work listener, I think mono is probably the best option for casting pods? There are a lot of variables with outside noise, potential level issues, shitty speakers etc that it's likely the SAFEST route. Re: A game for a non-gamer, would anyone say Minecraft? That appears to be a quintessential children's gateway game of our time, but I don't know if it's the same for adults. Would someone have said Minecraft previously, but not now? If not, reasons? Since I did not develop either of them so I'm not constrained by the restrictions, I think Gone Home and The Walking Dead would both be excellent introductory game experiences. Think of how many men or ladies would want to touch your peepee after experiencing the emotionally stirring story of Sam and Lonnie.
  16. Idle Thumbs 128: Dear Mom

I am listening to Episode 80: Happy Dishonored Halloween RIGHT NOW, and it's all your fault.
  17. Return of the Steam Box!

I thought I was the only one!
  18. Return of the Steam Box!

We are already at the point where just about the only games that are not ported to PC are 1st-party exclusive games (think Halo and Uncharted). Some of the games are now time window exclusive, lowering that limited availability even more.
  19. Why is Mario a cat? I cannot get past this.
  20. Return of the Steam Box!

    Me too!
  21. Artisanal is a word I hear exponentially more on Idle Thumbs than any other place combined. It's quaint. That 3D World trailer is really good except for the part where MARIO IS A CAT.
  22. Well now I'm barfing forever thanks.
  23. Whoa. WHOA! Ratchet & Clank are NOT kid's games. Especially since half or more of their titles are double entendres. They were also pretty awesome. I do understand what was trying to be described but I think the mark was missed.
  24. Return of the Steam Box!

Yeah I realized that. Still, anything that makes use of the middle screen heavily is going to either be an issue, or you'll be using the controller with different hand placement. The caveat is that if you are say, playing Crusader Kings in 60" glory, as long as the pause option is keyed on to one of the buttons then snap reactions are not going to be needed. Frankly, with Crusader Kings if the thumb pads served as reasonable mousing analogues you'd need about 2 buttons.
  25. Return of the Steam Box!

How big is it? That screen is right where the giant XBOX button is on a 360 controller, and perhaps it's just my tiny hands, but that button is very far away and awkward to press for me. In the scale drawing, the thumb pads are 1 1/8" across, and the pad width is almost identical. Educated guess, 2" width for a real thing seems reasonable. With my thumb on the 1" mark of a ruler, I can comfortably get to about 2 3/4" before I have to shift my hand. So I can theoretically get to about the mid of the pad. tl;dr it seems like button mapping is going to be astronomically important to controller usage. People maybe gots to use both thumbs now. After consideration, am I misinterpreting what you're saying? You can use quadrants of the touchpad themselves as button inputs If anyone has used an Android phone, most of them have haptic feedback on their keypads. It's just a nice little bump that you're actually in contact with the screen. vvvvv Twig I hope so too! Just trying to give a context for what haptic feedback actually is. It's a tactile response to a digital input, and is pretty cool and correct implementation can make a weird thing suddenly natural.
