I seriously cannot stop playing this game. I have an exciting/scary feeling that the city map is going to be my Deck 17/Facing Worlds for the next 2 days. Thank god it's not a demo, because I probably wouldn't get the game. BadfingerSA on Origin. http://www.twitch.tv/sadfinger/b/503334652 I streamed about two hours of it on... Friday? Sadly I have to lower some of the video settings to make it playable. I have probably improved markedly since then but it's me playing the map randomizer mode. Not talking much because my PTT key is the same as for the game.

Yes. When you hit "play" it puts you into a private lobby, at which point you can invite people. So.... I've played a lot of this. I'm really enjoying it. Two tips: 1) Playing Attrition mode, killing AI dudes (grunts specifically) actively helps you win the game. You get Attrition Points, which is what's counting up to win the game. It also speeds up your Titanfall timer. Running around and picking off 10-15 grunts right at the beginning can give you a really big leg up. Never stop killing the AI dudes. 2) The way the parkour works is you get a jump, a double jump, and a wall run. However, if you wall run it refreshes your jumps. So you can jump->run->jump->double jump->mantle to get up things you can't just normally (or jump/double/run/jump double/etc). I believe you can also string wallrun combos essentially indefinitely. Not sure I'm going to preorder, but it feels really, really likely I'll be buying this day 1 if the reviews bear out the rest of the game. I'm super interested in what the campaign multiplayer is going to be. Some of the burn cards are REALLY interesting. I got Ogre and Stryder cards, a Spider Sense card where it basically pings every time there's a player, and a Spectre card where it turns your character into a spectre model as a disguise. As I was running around it was clanking as though I was a mini-robit. I also like the risk/reward of the combos.

I'm very excited for Titanfall. I really hope I get into the beta, I'd love to really dig in and play it. My only aversion to Origin is that it splits the community between there and Steam. I am literally at my friends list limit just from communities I play Battlefield and tried to play SimCity with. Read the RPS article, and there wasn't anything worrisome in there basically at all that I saw. It appears Nate is much more interested in modding than I am. None of BF or CoD had modding to any real degree, and this is following right along. It's just not something I expect.

At one point there were 200 people looking at this thread concurrently. That's a lot of eyes on a thread for these forums. Watching it a second time was just as good as the first.

They are about to open the stuff right now. If you can't watch live, it'll be archived to the idlethumbs twitch stream.

I was concerned you guys didn't know where the well was. Nick eating rotten fruit like 200m from a completely free water source was very distressing. DayZ is rarely boring, even when it's slow.

Oh my goodness. Why do I not listen to the episodes the second they are downloaded onto my listening device? Oh my gosh. I wish I could have been a part of the anticipation building. What an awesome thing you all have done.

Do you like your spaceships to be guided by pragmatism or fantasy?
Badfinger replied to Dr Wookie's topic in Video Gaming
I want my capital ships to obey all the known laws of physics and not have spacebrakes, and I want fighters to just be the Red Baron but lasers. -

I really dislike games that do this. Turned me off to Far Cry, it turned me off on the modern Wolfenstein games. I know that's their whole schtick, but I still don't want to deal with femme nazi wizard dominatrixes. It bothered me a bit about the latest Tomb Raider too, although that was way more telegraphed mysticism right from the start. -

You should probably play DayZ. -
Oh right, that was the episode they all claimed it was terrible and ruined for talking about a topic for 90 straight seconds.

What do you get if you cross Star Citizen with No Mans' Sky?
Badfinger replied to Dr Wookie's topic in Video Gaming
Very cool. Might have to follow the dev on this game. Literally never heard of Elite before I clicked on this post and this would've been right up my alley. Reading the wiki page it looks like it was made on platforms supported in the US, but it seems to be a nearly exclusively UK game. No Man's Sky is in the zeitgeist and got major coverage on basically every US (and many UK) game publications. -
I would definitely second OBS as a worthy counterpart to xSplit, hopefully with slightly less derision. It's what I use and even though I'm super basic with overlays and stuff it seems to work well.

Sorry all, I was super sick all weekend and couldn't make it. Sounds like I didn't miss much!

Idle Thumbs 143: This One's Fr4e

While your point is well taken, the difference between a $180 piece of handheld hardware with an established library vs $4-500 pieces of living room hardware with real (artificial or not) scarcity is hardly the most straightforward comparison. Nintendo cut prices on the 3DS MUCH earlier than anyone anticipated, even after it was clear the launch hadn't gone as smoothly as they'd have liked. At that point, they were selling the 3DS at a loss. I don't know if they still are (e: I see you made this point in a later post). They literally apologized for the 3DS and it took 2 years to put games on it. While it's doing well now, for 2011, 2012 and a decent chunk of 2013 the 3DS looked like it was on life support. I believe the 3DS is now a success, but 18-24m for a platform to be profitable is way out of the norm for Nintendo. Do you expect it will continue to be the highest-selling platform of 2014? -

FUCKIN MATHNET .... is what, in my heart, this episode would have been called. Halfway Through The Animorphs would also have been good. I like when you guys ramble, good episode. -
I would love to hit a full server and go to airfields and explore dangerous places with you guys. There are other groups of guys I play with and they're fun, but in prime time we end up with groups of over 10+ and then people want to go to the coast and feed bambis disinfectant, and that's not what I really want out of the game.

People with Mosins who are camping fresh spawns need to learn that bolt action rifles through a scope don't work well for close encounters. Actually, I take that back. I hope they never learn. I'll have free loot from complete jerks forever.
-
Yep, that sounds like DayZ. Now do it all over again! With regards to disconnecting (and frankly everything), I wouldn't count on the game or the server to do something generous for you, ever. If you don't want to deal with the desync my suggestion is either relog or swap servers. Saline and blood bags will restore blood but they won't restore health. You regain health by eating and drinking properly until you get the "healthy" or "healing" status. If you have a million years to kill and want to learn about the DayZ health subsystems this guy has some really good videos. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC9YSGX22B6Z3k9-hJzJcz4w/videos

Idle Explorers (Spelunky, um, thumbs)

I would not/do not have the patience to spend upwards of 10 minutes per level just avoiding the ghost for extra gold. You're probably a better person than I. -

I wonder what I did to make Google think I'm interested in some of these things.
