Duh, yes. Absolutely. I was thinking conspiracy in the chem trails and drugs in the water sort of way and not in the law system definition way.

^^^^ Before the GJ hearing, people who knew better requested/demanded the prosecutor remove himself from this case due to having some connection with it (maybe being a racist white person in cahoots with the PD, I honestly don't remember) that would conflict with his job, and he refused. I realize this is me fiddling with semantics, but I think there's a genuine difference between corruption, incompetence and cover up, and genuine conspiracy. The Ferguson and StL PD (and possibly most PD around the country) are clearly corrupt. Abuse of power, for example, is corruption. They're also clearly incompetent, and are obviously covering up. I don't think it's a conspiracy. That would be purposefully fabricating a situation to kill a young man under uncertain circumstances to incite race rallies. This is "merely" a corrupt organization acting the way it always has and getting caught with 8x10 color glossy photographs with its hands where they shouldn't be, and stupidly acting like its business as usual because they have the badges.

http://www.dailykos.com/story/2014/11/20/1346374/-BREAKING-VIDEO-Police-Lied-Mike-Brown-was-killed-148-feet-away-from-Darren-Wilson-s-SUV I don't really like the badly written conspiracy theory-style way this is presented, but someone took the simple step of actually measuring the distance between the officer's vehicle and where Mike Brown was ultimately killed, comparing that to the police statement of distance in their reporting, and attempting to corroborate what that means with regards to the official statements and eyewitness reports of how the encounter occurred.

Now that 3.9 has been rolled out (skipping 3.05+ straight through) the game is suddenly working, and fun. I could get to every trade run! I had plenty of time to complete things! I made money! I still need to learn how to do things, but at least pulling stuff off the bulletin board led to a successful evening. It's the first time since I decided to jump in that I haven't wanted to clear my save and start over.

I wondered that myself, but between Sean's recount and watching Drew play the game, even 6 days in they are rapidly separating experiences.

Ok yep, I'm right there with you on the device maker vs phone company distinction. Makes sense. And yes, I don't want to let people who verbally attack developers off as merely ignorant rather than their actual malicious intent. Those are two different groups of people, and I don't want to suggest that anyone claiming people offering their goods for a fee are in the wrong shouldn't be held accountable. I do wonder if the money split on the app store is more along the lines of NEVER pays any money vs will buy things, rather than will buy things for a one time fee vs secretly a free to play whale but is outraged at "traditional" pricing.

I definitely want to continue the discussion about Pagan Min, want to mull some thoughts. JUST listened to the App Store discussion. One of my thoughts on free vs one time payment is maybe people feel like buying apps is an extension of phone companies doing sleazy things with their phone plans? IE, roaming fees, text plans, monthly overages. Rather than seeing it as using a store interface on your phone to purchase a product from a purveyor, it's all just grouped into throwing more money down the hole (buca) at the phone company. I can easily imagine a Mom Rant about already paying enough on the phone bill, don't you already have enough levels in your valley? My other thought is because some things are "free", no one wants to pay money for any things anymore. I definitely don't use the app store very much, in part because I'm worried the pocket change per purchase will add up over time. Which makes me the person i described above I suppose, viewing it all as "app store purchases" rather than one each from Sirvo, Vlambeer, Frogwares and Ustwo. This episode is an awesome episode. So much great discussion and also I've laughed a goddamn lot.

I think maybe perception of the game and the character suffered a bunch from the reveal where everyone saw the character and thought it was a white dude, and there's this feeling that he was changed to be Asian instead of actually developed as an Asian character all along? Also I'm dipping my toe into uncharted waters here, but why is it taken that the character is "strained through perspectives" and why probably white people (if you're not just going on the assumption that most game developers outside of Asia are white people, like I would be)? To phrase it differently, does it matter for this character but not for others in the game, or would it if they were well characterized? I have played the game as much as Sean, which is to say none at all to this point, but in reading reviews I haven't seen anything that make me think the characterization is objectionable in ways that would matter because of his race. I am not trying to play devil's advocate here. I would like discussion if there's some to be had.

Yes of course.

Because of course we're gonna talk about history in the Idle Thumbs AC thread, I would actually say that the overall "pirate" representation of history is far more murderous than they actually were. That's not to say there wasn't a fair bit of murdering, because of course there was. However, there are quite a number of pirates you would recognize the names of that were landed gentlemen before turning to piracy. On top of that, some pirates were secretly commissioned by the crowns of Europe as privateers. They were certainly actual ship's captains. Like lots of history that's given lip service but not explored in depth in history classes, the age of piracy is highly caricatured. It was also shorter than you probably think.

I mean, I actually do know what it is (plus context clues). It seems like sort of a step in between Olive Garden and Bertucci's/Macaroni Grill. I just didn't know it was such a part of the Idle Thumbs zeitgeist.

Cast in progress - thoughts grab bag Sean: this comment you made nagged at me, and I would be interested for you to expound on it. Discussing Pagan Min (FC4 antagonist), you said it didn't matter that he was Asian because he was a made up person. That immediately made me wonder why then such a big deal's made out of all the white man video game characters, because they're just made up people. Obviously there's a very, very good reason people make a big deal out of all the white dudes in video games, so I was surprised to hear you say that in such a cavalier way. He's the ruler/king of this faux Himalayan country that has ties to the region. Of course it matters that he's Asian. Am I taking this completely out of context? Assassin's Creed: Rogue looks good! It looks very much like it's continuing from the foundation that Black Flag built on, what with the boats and the British Isles protagonist and the working for Abstergo outside the Animus. It came out the exact same day as Unity to 0% fanfare and it looks (to me, a very big AC fan) like precisely what I want. AC: Unity absolutely has child models. Its early tutorial sequence has you as the child version of the main character doing things. The models look fine when they are applied properly. Confirmed bug (wontfix). I am probably almost precisely the Thumbs host member median age, and I've never Pokemon'd. I was a teenager when it first came out, and by the time I heard of it it seemed like a game that was aimed at a far younger audience than me. I had no interest whatsoever. It's interesting that there was a HS following at that time, because I definitely didn't perceive one. As a certified Old Person, I now assume that things 10 year olds like 13 year olds also like because obviously they're the same age, but there's such a stratification when you're younger. WHAT THE FUCK IS BUCA DI BEPPO?

I tried to be thorough in my search for a thread about this, and I haven't seen one. So here is a thread for COD: Colon 2014 Edition. Kevin Spacey plus a slew of reviews that were positive in the ways that they needed to be for me to buy this again has me back in the COD fold for the first time in quite a while. I've finished the campaign, and while there was nothing overly spectacular or ambitious about the plot, it's well carried out. Spacey is legitimately excellent with at least one really great supervillain moment, the rest of the acting is solid, and the animation and capture is all really well done. The game looks quite good. I'm not quite Blown Away overall, but the mission loading cutscenes had me wondering if they'd subbed in live video for some moments. The movement and future tech adds things the multiplayer needed, and the co-op seems solid if potentially running really long per round to its detriment. It's a good video game! Talk about it here.

Just saw the AC: Rogue quick look from GB. That looks like the AC game I actually want to play. Anticipating its PC release sometime next year.

Whoops wrong thread! I still want this game.

Idle Thumbs 183: The Anonymouses

I... had the same thing happen to me. One of us is a ghost. -
So, I'm starting to get quite frustrated with this game. Maybe I shouldn't be so reliant on the bulletin board, but the game is completely directionless without it. I've cleared my save and started over (not counting the times right after beta 3 when it was literally unplayable) 3 or 4 times due to not being able to deliver cargo. Systems it seems I should be able to reach comfortably I'm not able to go to, even when carrying no cargo at all. I am thousands of credits in the red over the time I've spent in the game so far for reasons I obviously know (fines for not delivering) but honestly can't understand. It's not an issue with the actual mechanics of the game. I have chosen to attempt to trade to make money to then ?(something?)?, but the game seems hell bent on denying me the opportunity.

The Governor of Missouri has preemptively declared a state of emergency to call in the National Guard in response to the findings that haven't even been released yet of the grand jury on the Mike Brown shooting.

I feel similarly, except that I wish I was better at cooking any of it. In general, if I'm just in the mood to cook something but just do it quickly, I'm never going to just happen to whip up any sort of Asian cuisine. For the folks that do, where do you get your inspiration? And even though I realize I'm lumping all the cuisines together (this is a thing that's true of basically all food cultures, frankly (the melding of Mexican and Spanish food?!)), what are some easy or go-to Asian recipes you use? I want to cook more of it and I don't know where to start.

Game looks awesome. Give me more Far Cry 3 but Far Cry 4 instead. I bought Call of Duty as a "looks decent, nothing else really coming" purchase, and now there's all this Far Cry and Dragon Age in my face and I'm regretful. At least those other games may go on sale at some point.

DA:O is bioware as hell. It's really a great game. I am almost certainly going to get Inquisition at some point, but I am STILL incredibly anxious to see what the multiplayer is like.

I have never eaten or made (possible seen?) a Christmas pudding. I assume it's like a tapioca-style affair so you're just substituting a colder and more delicious substance? My second assumption is it has some sort of animal blood in it, because England.
