  1. AC operates similarly to Call of Duty. A different studio internal to Ubi is the lead every year (with a pantheon following behind in the credits) ala Infinity Ward/Treyarch/Sledgehammer. They're just way less up front about it. This AC game is likely the team that produced either AC3 (eek) or Black Flag (hooray). AC: Rogue has been generally positively received, it just got all the "it's a bad game" markers prior to release because Ubi dumped all its marketing and hype into Unity and no one got Rogue for review prior to release day.

When my father was born, the top marginal income tax rate was 90%. Two years before I was born, it was 70% The year I was born, it was 50%. The year my sister was born, it was 30%. Those events are in chronological order. In that 6 years from when Reagan took the presidency to when my sister was born, he* (*Reagan in tandem with congress, but reaganomics let's be real) lowered the taxes of people who made adjusted for inflation $20,000 by 10% net! That's a lot! He lowered the taxes of people earning ten times that ($250k) by 40% net. Working class people in the post-war period had higher taxes than we do now, but did not pay monstrously more of their income to the government. Wealthy people paid way WAY more than they do now. I am willing to bet a lot of money that people who complain about taxes don't understand how much more of the tax burden used to be assumed by people who could easily shoulder it, and if they were in that class of person it wouldn't matter like it does now. The problem is you can't run an election on the platform of "I'ma make some rich people pay some taxes again please so we can have a government".

Hi I finally got a new job. It's not quite where I could have been with the other ones, but maybe I'll get an insurance now and stuff.

  5. Idle Thumbs 186: Doctor DNA

The world of console cartridge re-releases is fascinating to me. The vast majority of the populace (myself included until extremely recently) has no idea anything like that would happen, but it's so interesting how people like the speed running community find the release version most able to be blasted apart and broken to do things the fastest.
  6. Elite: Dangerous (Kickstarter)

I haven't seen another ship. How do I find and get this ship?
  7. Sports

I am quite happy with how the Eagles did on Thanksgiving. If they beat the Boys again they basically win the division, and have a good shot at a bye.
  8. Star Wars VII - Open spoilers

A weapon that shoots light. Hmm... Things that put me off- broadsaber, whatever dumb landspeeder that was, droid noise in the desert Things that make me excited- X-Wings, FIFA Bot, the Millennium Falcon, THAT FUCKIN MUSIC I'm not concerned it'll be bad, but I still share Jake's concern that it's something I'll just consume and move on.
  9. Elite: Dangerous (Kickstarter)

I believe it's the first scenario. The one where you learn how to deploy hardpoints and target a dude. The other ship doesn't have weapons or shields, it's just a target.

  11. Idle Food - Cooking!

Ok, here's my Thanksgiving lineup now that most of my food is prepped. Just a reminder that Thanksgiving is objectively the best holiday that exists, and due to that it is my favorite. http://www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2012/11/butterfiled-roast-turkey-with-gravy-recipe.html Turkey. I'm also going to be using an herb butter under the skin, and I "dry-brined" it. This is a change! I have been brining and doing Alton Brown's turkey for years now. Making turkey backbone stock for gravy, which I'll do using a roux. 5 pounds of mashed potatoes. Russets, skin on, I'll do a stick of butter, salt, pepper and milk until it's mashed potatoes. http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/sage-dressing-recipe.html Herb stuffing. It's not really this but it's close enough. 1 king sized loaf of white bread torn up. 1 stick of butter melted in a pan, add 2-3 stalks of chopped celery and a medium white onion, cook down until everything is thoroughly cooked through. This isn't sauteing really, they're almost swimming in the butter. Add fresh thyme, sage, and chopped rosemary, salt and pepper to taste. Pour over the bread, add 16oz of chicken stock. Mix up. I don't stuff a bird, so it goes into a casserole and will get baked at 450 until I remember to take it out of the oven after the turkey's done (probably about 30m). I double the recipe because it's my mom's recipe, everyone loves it, and I'm not allowed to change it. I feel for the people whose idea of familial stuffing is Stove Top. People say the secret to cooking is love. Nope, it's butter. http://www.wholefoodhabit.com/bacon-brussels-sprouts/ Trying these sprouts for the first time. Shameless plug, this is my cousin's website and it's awesome for easy and healthy food. http://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/cranberry_sauce/ Basic cranberry sauce. One of those dishes that seems fancy and is incredibly simple. http://www.simplyrecipes.com/recipes/applesauce/ Apple sauce. Same deal. Apple sauce seems complicated and everyone loves it so if you make it you're a hero. It's braindead easy. I'm making a spinach salad as well. Going to do some strawberries in it, and make probably a balsamic vinaigrette. And that's it! Except, of course, for cranberry sauce from the can. My sister is making dessert, something I've never been good at doing. THANKSGIVING, EVERYONE.
  12. Idle Workouts

Agreed. When I tell people what I weigh, 1) they don't believe me and 2) when they find out it's not what I'd like to weigh they flip out. Because I've added so much muscle while losing weight, my body shape has changed. People can't fathom what I'd look like under 200 lb. Even though I would consider myself overweight, I'm also fairly athletically built now but BMI would probably say I'm obese. Yep just checked. I am a point into the obese category. BMI wants me to lose FORTY more pounds to be "normal", which is almost as much as my original goal 3 years ago was from a weight higher than this one. I can stand to go for a jog, but people wouldn't recognize me after that.

Cold showers in the summertime are amazing.
  14. Nope, I'm right there with you. I STILL feel this is all rooted in the very first screenshots being released and people seeing him as a white guy rather than him actually being one. I heard about it first and was caught in the same wave of being upset, and then when I saw the high res screenshots he's obviously an Asian dude. I 100% believe this discussion would not have happened then and would not be happening now if they had released any of dozens of other PR screenshots of him looking obviously East Asian, and not "whitened up" by white dudes in Montreal.

To answer your question directly where Bjorn expanded on the reasons why it did not go to trial- Yes, Wilson should absolutely have been indicted and stood trial in a world where justice is blind. He may still be prosecuted on federal charges, and I can say with a reasonable degree of certainty that he's going to be wrung dry in civil court.
  16. Relistening to the podcast, I am feeling I misunderstood the direction of Sean's comment that I questioned earlier in the thread. I had thought his comment was directed towards the race of Pagan Min, but it sounds like it was because he was a fictional character that we shouldn't care. Sincere apologies! I hope it didn't come across as an accusation, as it was never meant that way. With that said, I still don't get the allusion. In movies, for example, those characters are still fictional. They aren't real, but we are implicitly asked to make the effort to take them seriously if that's how they should be taken. I'm not sure how that's different from a video game character except that sometimes Nicholas Cage is the wacky flamboyant bad guy, so we're judging if he's playing with or against "type".

It was cool when police gassed people trying to help a woman having a heart attack. http://www.rawstory.com/rs/2014/11/thats-my-momma-cops-fire-tear-gas-into-crowd-as-woman-suffers-medical-emergency/

I finally got to pick my commander name! Now I need to learn how to play this damn game!
  19. Ferguson

I am saddened, frustrated, disappointed, mad, upset. I am not at all surprised. Apparently police or municipal resources now admit that the distance from the vehicle was closer to 150 feet than 50. Quite literally, the police lied and a young man died.
  20. Crikey, It's Christmas (2014)!

Die Hard is the best Christmas movie, full stop.
  21. Assassin's Creed Rogue

I am legitimately excited about Rogue, and will be in on the purchase when it makes its way to PC. It feels like a game that should be in GOTY discussions ala Black Flag, but no one will have played.
  22. I confused her with Miley Cyrus because I'm an idiot, but I do actually know who she is. I'm willing to bet quite a lot of bucks that there are things or people I'd consider obvious and mainstream that you're not familiar with. As always, even popular culture isn't as popular as it used to be. e: It wasn't meant as a takedown of you. She's a lady that makes music I don't care for or about. Popular culture is increasingly fragmented and even "important" things matter less and less to fewer people.
  23. Embarassed admission: When you guys were having the conversation about Taylor Swift on the cast, up until the moment when Sean actually said "go full Miley" that's who I actually thought you were talking about, and I was really fucking confused. Following this line of questioning, when in the 'cast process do you guys do ad reads? Before/after/during? No reason to ask except to satisfy my curiosity and get a glimpse into the sausage making.
  24. Idle Food - Cooking!

I was going to say I am excited to see the Thumbs output of foods in the next week for Thanksgiving, but I realized that no one here lives in the United States.
  25. My biggest exposure to Taylor Swift is when one of her songs got spoofed by the Bad Lip Reading guy https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC67f2Qf7FYhtoUIF4Sf29cA, and then was was taken off his youtube channel for copyright infringement. (With the magic of the internet: ) Taking that into consideration, and comparing that "version" of the song to the actual music in the video tells me everything I need to know about Taylor Swift, which is I am aggressively disinterested in her or her music.
