If anyone is browsing the thread right now, there's going to be another TASbot block within minutes, and then the Super Metroid race. The donation incentive for Kill/Save is like $170k, which is wildly more than the whole AGDQ altogether from 2012.

Idle Thumbs 192: The New Blindfolded Fool
Badfinger replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I find it hard to imagine that even a plurality of the people in the survey reporting very low amounts are wealthy beyond needing an income, forget the majority. The amount of people who donated $1k+ by income bracket is a pretty reliably increasing percentage in a way that suggests that "income" is essentially synonymous with "wealth". The survey results are here, by the way. I still don't know what Star Citizen is, but apparently people want it to be Star Wars, Firefly and Mass Effect rolled together. https://www.instant.ly/report/54a985dde4b0cea5d72c8c2a -

Idle Thumbs 192: The New Blindfolded Fool

No he's got it right. Dishonored was Volume GOTY (VGOTY) for 2012 which makes it Dishonored GOTY 2011, one year earlier. Star Citizen is Dishonored GOTY 2013. Also this joke has gone far beyond its natural conclusion, I think. -
Figured I should chime in, but DA combat is wonderful (at least Origins). I played it with the same glee I played Baldur's Gate, which makes complete sense to me because that's what they were trying to hit. I actually feel some buyer's remorse from getting Inquisition, because what I really want is the DA world and characters with Divinity's combat. (What I really want is Baldur's Gate: Inquisition let's be real) Regarding Danielle's accent, wasn't she the impetus of her own change? I don't mean to imply there aren't outward social connotations to accents and dialect, but I thought I recalled her saying she inwardly wanted to change the way she spoke.

I prefer it when the people who are playing aren't dicks. If you're interested in crazy skip stuff in a similar game, I recommend the Dishonored runs from AGDQ/SGDQ, or the Half-Life 2 runs. Holy smokes the skips.

It's right and good that the Idle Thumbs GOTY 2012 is Dishonored. -

Even Shark Week sucks now. Survivorman is still cool, but my god everything on History, Discovery, and Science is garbage now. Anyone remember that TLC stands for "The Learning Channel"? That's the worst of them all. -

Oh Jellyvision is an awesome name. I was thinking only of the name of the game rather than the company. -
Shovel Knight beaten in 47 minutes is pretty insane. It was like a magnitude less insane than the Tetris stuff. TAS block and Tetris are probably highlights so far. Also recommend Battleblock Theater run. Shovel Knight was really cool though, and the devs were impressed. :3

I'm having trouble coming back to the game and having it stick. The fact that it has overarching goals but is basically unstructured has made it tough for me to figure out what I'm "supposed" to do, and nothing but shuttling stuff between stations is really surfaced very well. I enjoy the sensation of flying this spaceship, but I need it compounded with something else or it gets repetitive.

Idle Thumbs 192: The New Blindfolded Fool

I know for certain that PS3s can and have been used by the US military. They made a supercomputer with them that was operating, at least as of 2010. I was sure that the comment that people had been using PS2s as supercomputers was just a complete misremembering and attributing PS3 chat to earlier in time. Then I did a little searching and found THIS: http://www.zdnet.com/article/uk-intelligence-dismisses-ps2-missile-fears/ In it, there was reporting on the speculation that a few thousand PS2s bought and imported into Iraq within 6 months after the US launch weren't, you know, game consoles, they were being scooped up for military purposes. The revealing quote? SUSPICIONS CONFIRMED. (Actually they were probably confirmed when someone made a supercomputer out of PS2s http://www.geek.com/games/researchers-create-a-playstation-2-based-supercomputer-553365/ but that's way less fun). Also what's wrong with the names of the games in the JackBox? JackBox makes me think of jack in the box, where when you use it something wacky pops out. Drawful conjures images of drawing, and fibbage is a game about lying. The fact that it's a portmanteau of fib and cribbage is probably incidental. I actually thought they were good names. Now I'm questioning myself, Jake! -
Actually, It's about Relocation in Games Journalism

He mentions being "one of the first" to break the story. The key point though is that he didn't see it on some other website and decide to swoop in and publish to a broader audience. He was doing actual reporting, and was getting information directly from sources. When he had enough to corroborate, he published. It just happened that he wasn't the only one that was getting that information, and someone else beat him to the byline. At the time it was thought that he had broken the story because he DIDN'T rip off another reporter. He doesn't have to credit someone else in his article for independent reporting. "Credit where it's due" is saying he wasn't first. -

I'm pretty disappointed Patrick left Giant Bomb for Kotaku. I've never been interested in the content that site produces, and Kinja websites are hideous. I think the change makes sense for him, both in terms of his goals and his focus. I also have to imagine, even though it was a personal decision that I deeply understand and respect, that working for a personality-driven website where you're 1500 miles from any of the other personalities has to be a tough row to hoe. I don't have any interest in horror games, so something like continuing to do Spookin' with Scoops isn't anything that will draw me back in. He basically has to write the best eye-grabbing articles ever, and I have to be able to get to them without having to wade through the rest of the garbage that is the Kotaku website. So, I guess goodbye Patrick. It was nice to get to know you. -

I do not think the point of video games is escapism, but I also think it's fine if the point of video games is escapism to you.

Ok I'm probably giving him too much credit on carefully choosing words he writes, but I really do think there's nothing wrong with that tweet. I am reminded of a friend of mine in some ways when people discuss Dan. She and I were asking each other how our New Years Eves were, and she said she loved hers because she had an amazing time going to dinner and dancing, and then had wild, crazy sex when they got home. My reaction internally to when she says those things is: why did you say that? You know people don't say things like that, right? One, she doesn't seem to know. From many conversations, she paints this picture of everyone around her walking into a room and casually announcing "man I'm tired from all that sex I just had!" Two, why can't you say that? I don't say things like that, and I never will, but on reflecting there's nothing that actually prohibits you talking like that if you wanted. I would NOT have said publicly what Dan did, but I don't actually see anything wrong with him saying it. How fucked up is our society that it probably is the best personal 6 months of his life or career or what have you, but to actually say that gets him vilified? I understand there are larger themes and important things in play out there in the world, but man it's a tweet.

Oregon is absolutely gobsmacking Florida State, and my god there isn't a better way the year could start than this.

No, there wasn't. Suggesting that is both disingenuous and dangerous. He got hired by one of the most popular and personality driven video game websites in the world, and he moved to San Francisco for christ's sake. I realize that people expect someone to not publicly exult in their personal joys when other people are not having a great time, but he had a pretty fucking awesome year. I wish I had Dan's year. And take note, he did NOT say 2014 was the best year ever. He said he'd never personally enjoyed a 6 month period more than the preceding. I realize he comes off as a dope, but he seems pretty careful with the words he writes.

Hello friends. Have a happy and safe New Year's. I look forward to seeing you all in world that's more positive in the next 365 days. -
I had a roommate in college who was gay. Everyone knew he was gay, he was spending all his time with another guy who was openly gay (obviously his boyfriend, but not directly reference) who confided to a mutual friend of ours that the roommate not coming out was a source of tension in their relationship. Even so, every once in a while he would make these really stilted comments about how hot some girl or other was, or they did a sexy thing. It would have been relieving to laugh about it with him. He never came out to us, and we never had that moment with him. It was four of us in two room, and I shared my room with him. I wish I had been closer with him. I probably was not a very good roommate, which is partially because I'm probably not a very good roommate, and partially because I was going through family things that of course I didn't share with anyone. Yeah, I wish we'd had the chance to talk. Grayson it might even be worth checking out Craigslist as well. Just be thorough in checking stuff out whatever you do and you'll probably find something and be fine.
