I love Danny as the foil for the ad reads. It's the best. Unlike mayo, which as established, is the opposite of the best.- 1367 replies

Idle Thumbs 210: Pro Fish Smart Fish

I am enamored with the battery for scale. -
Believe it or not, there are things I am more passionate about than video games. Food is basically at the top.
-
Half of a bone-in picnic shoulder later, I am pretty damn happy you decided to buy a crock pot, Twig.
-
yeah there are some parts and pieces I'd like to add to my ship. Some of them are just super expensive (for the ship), and some aren't available where I've been poking around. Would be nice to be able to sniff that stuff out. Fightin' and Upgradin' is still by far the most rewarding experience I've had so far.

I had a much more interesting and fun time tonight shooting space mans than hauling space grain. Made about 600k in bounties, which is closing in on the value I've made over the entirety of the game on trade. eeking out the next piece of the upgrade puzzle is super interesting, too.

I am drawing the goddamn line. The line is here. ps standardization -
If you are purchasing a crock pot, you are explicitly making the culinary statement that all your meat will be reduced to delicious shreds. Outside of tougher cuts of beef you're not gonna have a choice if you let them sit long enough. Oh my goodness. I am absolutely breaking out the crock pot tonight.

Neat. That basically squares with what I've been reading. Are ship and part prices generally static? The wiki says the Viper is 140k. Are there pitfalls to avoid or is buying a ship somewhere basically the same as anywhere else (so long as I can get to where I want to go)? Should I get a warrant scanner?

If you play any games that involve space, you are insidiously being taught the metric system at all times. The conspiracy reaches to the government level, where NASA uses metric measurements. -

Thank you. I hope for those things one day too. -
Interdiction is super predictable. If you are in a system that sells rare goods, you will get interdicted. It's kind of disappointing to be honest. Yes, I got pulled out of supercruise and exploded the minute I ended up in Diso, at the end of a 25 minute journey. That was extremely frustrating. Then an hour later after making the return trip and a trip out I finally cashed back in only to find that there were barely any goods where I landed. Two small hops later and I had nearly a full cargo, and after that hour I ended the night in Diso. Don't get me wrong, since Sunday when I bought the hauler I have exponentially increased my funds but last night was extremely unsatisfying. I think I might give bounties a shot? Take one more load of corn because it's already in the hold, and do something else. What's a good primer for picking fights? I'll have like 750k or so to work with. What ships are good options, what is a reasonable starting loadout, what should I avoid? I'm normally willing to give trial and error a shot, but in such a huge sim with so much room for messing up your play, I'm willing to take the shortcut of some institutionalized knowledge for some more immediate enjoyment of actually flying.

Australia's minimum wage is more than double the US. Pardon my comparative lack of sympathy for the slight premium on video games. I am relistening to all the casts, and I am reveling in the Breckoning of Crusader Kings, as well as Danielle's first appearance on the cast. -
I'm not much for jar salsa, but if you like this idea and you like spicy, smothering them in a can of chiles in adobo sauce is really, really tasty. In general if you're doing "pulled something" in the slow cooker, you cook then sauce. So if you're doing a pork shoulder and you cover it in barbecue sauce of some sort, you're going to get those flavors but the sauce itself is going to break down. When you pull it, your protein will be sitting mostly in its own juices and whatever liquid you added, at which point you can add back more stuff to get that barbecue "look" and flavor. My favorite rub is super similar to Jon's. 1 part salt, 2 parts paprika, 2 parts brown sugar. Add cumin when I have cumin. If you like vinegar bbq, do apple cider vinegar (or apple cider?!) for your liquid. Crock potting is great. You get real person cooked food by pointedly walking away.

Bought the PC version, played 90 minutes or so. I had my friend's PS4 copy to borrow, and I've already gone a completely different direction than I did the first time with the consequences of not being able to get back to that area yet. I'm not entirely sure where I SHOULD go at this point. I know I'm not stuck but I am also not seeing where I should be. It's not THAT linear.

I wouldn't stress over the details on a crock pot, especially if you're not going to be taking food anywhere. The $25-30 crock pot is gonna work just fine for shoving food in on a Sunday. Find a size and cost you're comfortable with and grab one. I can imagine the programmable nature of the one you linked could be useful if you want to pay that premium. When you get one, get these. They will change your crock pot life. (don't buy them online though, just go to the store) http://www.amazon.com/Reynolds-Metals-00504-Cooker-Liners/dp/B00578EKRY/ref=pd_bxgy_79_img_y

Hero Quest owned! Oh I'm sorry, I have those words in the wrong order. I owned Hero Quest. I recall having fun the 2 or 3 times I played it. Then we used the pieces for a game my friend made. -
I was mostly using 1 million credits to be illustrative of my current situation. Additional illustration: I didn't know there was such a thing as ship insurance. 50 tons isn't much of a burden, considering I have 16 tons of cargo space. I don't need to trade necessarily. It's just the safest and most intuitive way I can think of to make money. Wookie, most of what you're saying is complete Greek to me. How would I know to make those connections for trade routes? Where can I learn that? I mean, I'd like to make some money because it seems like it would expand my opportunities, but I also want to have fun. If I took 150k and threw it into an Eagle+upgrades, I could make money through bounties as well correct? e: so if I went to diso and filled up a load with corn, if I took it to Zeessze 135 LY away I would be making close to max profit, and could turn around and grab the rare there and send it back? If I wanted to buy a fuel scoop, what component should I replace? I'm not fighting in this thing. Should I scrap shields? 2e: attempted to move rare goods around the galaxy for profit this evening. That was miserable.

Help I'm back in Elite. Used the equity from the backer Eagle to get a hauler, and I've put about 200k into it to upgrade various parts and pieces. Via one website that gins up trade routes, I can make about 20k profit per cargo load on sites 20-30 LY apart. Which means I can buy the million credit ship in... maybe about 10 hours of doing nothing but running beryllium back and forth. What else can I do as a poor space trader to make some cash and get a ship that isn't straight peanuts? I know I've asked this question before, but the game has no internal resources and I don't know which external ones are the best. I don't really understand how exploration works. Is mining a reasonable alternative to hauling for making some bucks? What can I do to learn about trading myself besides punching in a system name on a data aggregation site?

Neat. I have learned something and for that I am glad. Spaff, you Partridge'd the end of the podcast. D3: Reaper of Souls is such a better long-term experience for Diabling. The difficulty settings make sense, which makes advancing to a new difficulty a something exciting. Ironically enough, the loot changes are basically what happened from Vanilla WoW to Burning Crusade. Yes, you're not getting a bunch of stuff with intelligence on it as a Monk which means each piece is either just a flat upgrade or garbage, but it means you're getting things that legitimately make your character better. Layering on the unique legendary items, the blood shard vendor, item sets, and then adventure mode and rifts is so much good Diablo. Even the "season" system is really neat, which makes no sense to me externally considering it's a game of ever increasing progression on a specific character. Somehow though, it's incredible. -
There are plenty of things that show our brain sort of smooths over misspellings and wrong words and extra articles and too many uses of the word "and" in a sentence to just inject what is actually meant straight into our thoughts without pesky interpretation. I would guess the most straightforward reason is a combination of the fact that you and I know how to read, plus we've spent years and years on the internet subliminally parsing writing from people who are bad at writing to have it make some kind of sense (see this post for examples). I never did a hooked on phonics thing. Lots of being read to and attention from my parents.

Oh, obviously. Don't we all? I didn't mean to suggest you went full Clarkson. You never want to go full Clarkson. Does it? I honestly have no idea. That's the only place I ever heard it. -

Oh my goodness the ending to this episode. And Spaff, I'm calling you out. You totally Clarkson'd the end of the podcast. I heard it! -
Looking for apartments. Is the common adage that you shouldn't spend more than 30% of your gross income on rent, or on total living accommodations? That makes a pretty big difference and I have seen both. It's making me nervous.

Damn it, but computers have become really complicated

I pulled the trigger. Twin Frozrs will be mine on Friday. That SSD looks awesome. I was given explicit instructions from the internet to avoid the Samsung 840s, but the 850 is supposed to be amazing.
