Idle Thumbs 125: Eyes of the G-Man
Badfinger replied to Jake's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
I don't necessarily disagree with her. Star Wars is much more Space Soap than sci fi, and I don't know of many people who would argue otherwise that have exposure to more than just Star Wars. That's essentially where the nerd Star Trek/Wars divide comes from. Star Trek is all about megalyzing the proton reactium reductors to inhibit the negafield, and Star Wars is about using your feelings and wanting to hug a dad. I don't know if I thought about it critically at the time, but reading Foundation was a massively different experience to reading/watching/playing Star Wars. The actual debate is does one cheapen the other, and my answer is no, Star Wars can only cheapen itself and will not hesitate to do so. -
Traditional controller usage makes those 4 buttons around the touch screen scream "We're impossible to use!", but maybe they actually aren't.

Congrats Jake and Sean, on the nerds rope! Also on starting a company holy crap. -
What the hell is that thing! I want to hold it.

I guess my biggest thrust is the first rule of computer building is you can't future proof, and you are throwing bad money after good if you attempt it. The second rule of computer building is also that you can't future proof. If games crush it with an 8 core processor then go hog wild, but games released this year have run extremely well on hardware from a year to 18 months ago. I'm still rolling strong on an i5. We're right at the beginning of the transition from 8 year old hardware to shiny new hardware. Also I am excited for this afternoon! Tell me about the boxes, Gabe.

I want to be on the same LoMas no babies train as Nick, but I'm feeling the same squeeze on time lately that Chris probably experiences on a much more regular basis. Yeah I could jump into a game but it's already only an hour before bedtime; I could jump in but I'm tired and I don't want to crap up a game and tank my rating; I could but I'm talking to someone and the conversation would get much more staccato, etc. Which is all weird because when I THINK about playing, I'm really excited about doing it. -
I really cannot recommend following advice to move to more than 4 cores until there is proven need for more than 4 cores. You are also not going to be building that $500ish sweet spot machine by overspending on processors.

Without having to buy an OS or a monitor, you can probably make a PC that can tackle this year's releases in 1080p for something competitive in price to the XBox One. Things like if you want an SSD and how much video card you want will push it up or down in corresponding fashion.

I think one of the most interesting developments is how SteamOS and Greenlight will intersect. Right now if you're trying to get greenlit and you have a neato concept, you point people to your website and say "Download this executable!" If we're living in a world where some not-insignificant percentage of computer gamers are using a version of Steam that's not built to run on a Mac or PC, will options like those disappear? Is the benefit of having a flexible pc-esque living room experience the cost of the openness that's really pushed PC gaming forward with the rise of indie development? Or will this be the slow smothering of the Greenlight initiative, folding back into the curated experience?

As I was googling around for a picture and wording of the old "Editor's/Gamer's Tip" comment box from hint guides, apparently I pulled a google search that led to the result "7 Tips for Dating A Gamer" which I could not resist clicking on. http://love.allwomenstalk.com/tips-for-dating-a-gamer That's not All Women's Talk, by the way. It's All Women Stalk. I considered posting this in the Feminism thread, but because it's a little bit lighter and not exactly on topic I didn't want to detract from the more important conversation going on. This is a weird article. It has some generic "how to handle your SO's hobby that isn't yours" stuff, it has some gaming misconceptions (your man is going to need a LOT of time to game, so give him space), even though it offers up the "ask about games you might be interested in" avenue it's written basically from the perspective that the only kind of game is an FPS, and Tip 1 and Tip 5 are basically the same bad advice. This article comes complete with the hysteria-driven 'gaming is an addiction/games always come before you' first comment. I think the best tip is #7, and that's just general advice that men (or at least me) think practical gifts are romantic. I think the comments are probably the most redeeming part, because most of the women either enjoy gaming or are included in the gaming experience their SO's have. For the most part, it's a clickbait article and it could have been on any topic (cars, books, movies, sports) but it's interesting that gaming is still this weird and mysterious thing that people have to "deal" with even though there are hundreds of millions of dedicated gaming platforms in the US and everyone who has a smart phone has games. If someone you know asked you for advice on their new SO who plays games, what would you actually tell them, as opposed to "Give them hours of space they need it that's how gamers are"?

Using their loose terminology, she stalked women's suffrage and disabled person advocacy. And possibly Anne Sullivan.

One of the things that sprang to mind about bluffing is actually FPS games (and also LOMA games). In most shooters, for deathmatch/TDM/small objective based modes, people start to fall into patterns. I know I certainly do. When you're doing well, you'll tend to run certain routes around the map, and you always seem to be in the right place. When you're not, someone's always behind you no matter where you start and where you go. If you play consecutive rounds with the same opponents, you can start to find their tendencies and exploit them when you recognize them. LOMAs are the same way. If you are in a place with the game where you can actually pay attention to what your opponent is doing and not just tunneling on worrying about yourself, you can start to pick up their tendencies. You can bluff that someone's waiting to kill them by playing out of character and aggressive, or you can attempt to purposely over-extend to get them to fall into a trap attack. Sean, I recently dislocated my shoulder by being a clumsy oaf, and it came right in the middle of softball season, but also right in an extreme period of stress. So not only was I injured by my own idiocy, and then losing out on a recreational activity, but it happened at a time when I desperately needed that activity to help alleviate the frustration of the rest of my life, and I went into a really big lull, compounded by the fact that I couldn't exercise. I can empathize with you. On a positive note, I've come out of it and my shoulder's ok and I can go to the gym (now I have to go to the gym :[ ) and also we won the softball league. It's ok! -
I think it is a testament to the fidelity of this game that I desperately want to read a where are they now, or message these ladies on twitter and see what's going on in their lives.

Thank you for asking. I am very grateful to have closure on the issue. I think they made a smart decision. Asserting a non-falsifiable statement, that all women stalk, is an easier position to maintain than attempting to gather all of women's talk generated in one place. That would likely be very exhausting.

Why do footlong hot dogs come sold by weight rather than by quantity?
-
Does that actually make anything you've simulated experiencing less real or true?
-
You did, which I thought was funny, doubly so because with the amount of fussing that sometimes can be heard during Episode Start Mode no one corrected it. Not intended as criticism, just saying if you have some kind of deadlines you have to meet, you have a month less than you thought!

The article doesn't use SO, I did. It's significant other, because the article was about girls dating guys but I was talking about people dating (or being married too?!) other people. Some of those people aren't girlfriends probably. ...No I guess sombre overlord works.

I think it's silly, but I keep attempting to put discussion into a thread that was meant to be silly. I'm gonna sit back and let the web ad/gamer dating take their course, because that was mostly what I was hoping would happen when I posted this.
-
I don't self identify as a capital-G Gamer, but if someone asked if I played games I would say "Yes, I'm a gamer." I must have missed the discussion and decisions made where calling someone "gamer" is terrible. It's a description, not a lifestyle.

I don't mean to alarm you guys, but it's September. I realize this may be worrisome.

It turns out that with enough salt and fat, anything can be fucking delicious. EDITOR'S TIP: Adding bacon is a shortcut to leveling up any dish!
