I've had great learning experiences watching people stream games like LoMas and tactical/ccgs. I use them mostly for background education (if you can call learning about games that) when I'm too bushed to do anything myself.

Episode 239: A Blizzard of Enthusiasm
osmosisch replied to Rob Zacny's topic in Three Moves Ahead Episodes
For what it's worth, League of Legends already does this. I'm also one of the people that fell off the blizzard wagon post-WC3. WoW's online-only stuff was acceptable for obvious reasons but them trying to fold it into SC2/D3 made me not want their games. WC3 is also where they really started huffing their own farts plot-wise, which has been getting progressively worse. -
Wow, that's the opposite of how it works for me: the sting of paying has worn off, so if the game is good (and I take care to only buy the best games) there is only pure enjoyment left. See also http://money.usnews.com/money/blogs/the-best-life/2013/05/20/5-ways-money-can-buy-happiness

Gosh, that's amazing. What a read. Thank you.

I don't think I know you well enough to respond to that meaningfully, except to express as much sympathy as you think is appropriate. Everyone in the book struck me as deeply, fundamentally unhappy. e: I wouldn't say it didn't work for me - if anything it worked too well. As a father of two growing daughters I found the book frightening. I'm just a bit tired and stressed lately and wasn't expecting something this harsh. e2: I'm quite happy I read it and I think it's a book that has taught me some lessons, but it wasn't comfortable and I'm not sure I was ready for it. But thanks for the recommendation, and I'm on the whole happy I followed it. Sorry for the poorly-worded first response. I should have let it settle a bit more.

Infinite Jest, no contest.

Just bought & read it on this recommendation. Fucking hell, this was depressing. Just, ugh. Ugly, broken people with ugly, broken lives. I'd say a good book, but man. Not actually what I was looking for right now.

I automatically felt a lot of empathy with the characters, mainly due to the many little character-building moments. Setting doesn't really figure into that much for me. Brothers are brothers, fantasy world or no.

http://www.faeria.net/ I checked out this game's kickstarter and was intrigued enough to back it, and I have to say nothing has captured my interest like this since Pox Nora. Key feature: NO BUYING OF CARDS FOR MONEY. You get points by playing which you spend on booster packs, and then you can trade - but you can't put money into the game except by paying for expansions or cosmetic items further down the road. I can't say how refreshing this is.[/url] There's also a very interesting resource/spatial mechanic where you need X terrain tiles of a certain type in your domain to be able to play certain cards, thus forcing expansion and conflict. Any thumbs in on this? I'd love to get some games going.

I'm afraid I don't fit your generalities. I found King of Tokyo without the expansion to be random and kind of boring, and Galaxy trucker depressing because of all the failure. I've had the best experience re: general hits with Dixit, 6 takes and Great Dalmuti.

In what sense? In general you just plonk 'em down. If it's about activated abilities, this is by far the biggest ui problem - you need to hover the unit that has the ability, then there will be a popup letting you use it. I really hope they come up with something better for that,.

I listen to Bonfireside Chat, a D*Souls podcast by the Watch out for Fireballs guys.

Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.
osmosisch replied to Tanukitsune's topic in Video Gaming
Oh, I'm on PC. In general, yes it's possible. You just arrange (easiest via voice) a place where the person helping you will put down their summon sign, and pray to the dark gods of Souls' netcode. -

Also there's plenty of thumbs (me, Rodi for sure) that would be happy to help out I have a sorcerer pretty much permanently ready to kill O&S because it's one of my favourite fights. -
There's some kind of neat tutorial quests that also get you started with basic cards and some ingame cash to spend on packs.

I'm not a fan of any traitor games, including BSG.

I love the stereo effect when using both earplugs but i often only have one on when cycling for example to better hear traffic. As such, while I prefer stereo aesthetically I prefer mono in practice.

The downtime at least isn't too terrible as I remember it, if you die just roll up a new guy; turns themselves are brief.

I want a good Dune game that isn't a strategy.

That reminds me, in Cash & Guns you are required to say "Cojones!" when you don't duck out.

100% agreed. I once manged to make one of my friends ragequit by managing to steal from/assassinate him three turns in a row as he was about to win.

My favourite not-very-good game to generate ridiculous stories is Talisman. Like the time one guy managed to teleport and finagle his way to the centre and started trying to drain the rest of us and failed...for 13 straight turns, while we painstakingly made our way to him, and were one space away from winning, when he rolled again..and failed! it was like a raid boss encounter all of a sudden instead of the weird cutthroat race it normally is. Basically any games where barbarians can get turned into toads is going to tickle my fancy.
