Twin Peaks Rewatch 6: Cooper's Dreams
Argobot replied to Chris's topic in Twin Peaks Rewatch Episodes
On Audrey and Cooper -
I strongly disagree with the idea that Taylor Swift doesn't sell sex. Her earlier music (which, I'll admit, I am only passingly familiar with) sells this ridiculous image of a saintly, pure young woman. Even with this more blatantly pop album, Swift is still positioned as the anti-Katy Perry, or the anti-Brittany, or the anti-Miley, because she maintains that virginal, girl next door quality. It's still sex, the Madonna side of the whore/Madonna duality, and it still sends unreasonable messages to young women about how they should relate to their sexuality. The new album is frustrating because she is clearly talking about sex, but it's cloaked in gauzy metaphor that feels calculated to allow her to hold onto the Madonna image, while providing a very measured, clinical titillation.

Twin Peaks Rewatch 5: The One-Armed Man

I've been rewatching Gilmore Girls on Netflix (it's starting to become a problem, honestly) and I have to disagree. That show and its characters are woefully underdeveloped. But, it does have a strange connection to Twin Peaks in that they're both shows about small towns with wacky characters and Sherilyn Fenn and the woman who played Shelly were both supporting characters on the show (Fenn was Luke's ex and Shelly was Sherry, Chris' ex). There ends my ruminating on Gilmore Girls. -
Twin Peaks Rewatch 6: Cooper's Dreams

Yes, these are both so fantastic. Especially the last one, because "Into the Night" can be heard in the background. This whole scene where they discover Jacques' cabin is one of my favorites from the show because it has that song in it. -
I'm glad that my negativity hasn't stopped you from enjoying the book! My criticisms kind of soured my partner from reading it, so I've felt a tad guilty about disliking this book in the first place. You're completely correct that Mitchell's strong suit is writing convincing characters (although I think the way Holly ended up at the end is anything but convincing). Please share your thoughts after you finish! After being in a kind of reading slump, I finally finished Marilynne Robinson's Lila. Now I have the time to start rereading Inherent Vice before the movie comes out. Pynchon writing a hardboiled detective novel set in a foreboding late 1960s LA is truly a fun reading experience. Anyone who has an interest in seeing the PT Anderson movie really should consider reading this book first.

Interstellar is the most frustrating movie experience I've had in a while. You can tell that there is a good movie in there somewhere, it's just buried under cliched dialogue and a failed attempt at recreating parts of 2001. It's the fastest moving three hour movie I've ever seen, which means that the movie never felt long, but I also never felt that it gave its audience enough time to understand or appreciate what was happening on screen. The idea that love is this powerful force that can transcend time and space is something that I am willing to accept in a certain kind of movie, but Interstellar wanted to be three kinds of movies all at once, and ended up weakening its central point. The overuse (and misuse) of the Dylan Thomas poem was also unhelpful.

When Audrey is asking her dad for a job at the department store, there's a picture of her and Laura that she glances down at on her father's desk. For those who have already watched the show: -

When Cooper retells his dream to Lucy and the Sheriff (It's not really a spoiler, but if you haven't seen the European pilot and don't want to know anything about it, then don't read)

Twin Peaks Rewatch 3: Zen, or the Skill to Catch a Killer
Argobot replied to Jake's topic in Twin Peaks Rewatch Episodes
I think Hawk is wearing the oven mitts so that he is not directly touching the bucket which might interfere with Cooper's rocking throwing magic. Or because it's a great visual. -
Congratulations! Best wishes to you both.

Twin Peaks Rewatch 3: Zen, or the Skill to Catch a Killer

There is a truly great NY Mag article from 1990 (apparently written right after this episode airs). It goes into some background detail about the show, with really great quotes from Lynch on the meaning of the weird parts of Twin Peaks. It's crazy to read something from that era now, with the 20+ year distance. Really worth reading, and zero chance of being spoiled if you have only watched the first three episodes. http://t.co/PY8EM2ip0Q -
How did multiple people reference Hellmouths and not make a Buffy joke?

I buy Wicker Man connection, but Silence of the Lambs might be too much of a stretch. Either way, this is also one of my favorite episodes of the show, mostly because of that dream sequence. There is something so psychically penetrating about it and I'm always enraptured when I watch it. The sound of the (I think) Man From Another World's hands as he rubs them together is especially hypnotic. -
Most things that Gamer Gate stands for sounds nice on paper, until you remember that the hashtag was started by a washed up actor after reading a blog post written by a disgruntled ex who was clearly trying to shame his former girlfriend. Anything that comes out of that initial vileness cannot be good. Plus, these "ideologies" are really just reviewers from different backgrounds saying they want better representation in games. Labeling it as an ideology gives it a much more nefarious sounding bent and acts as a dog whistle for those with misogynistic feelings. Any legitimacy this movement has is lost every time the hashtag gets repeated.

I listened to that story when Chris shared it on Twitter a few days ago and was so disheartened. It's good that CS departments are actively working to address the issue raised in the episode, but it's still so sad thinking of all the women who were pushed out of CS between 1984-today. It also reminded me of this great essay by Ellen Ullman. (She wrote By Blood, one of the Idle Book club picks, and is a long time computer programmer.) http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/19/opinion/sunday/how-to-be-a-woman-programmer.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

Twin Peaks Rewatch 2: Traces to Nowhere
Argobot replied to Jake's topic in Twin Peaks Rewatch Episodes
The place setting in TV shows with a central murder mystery is very obvious. Shows like Twin Peaks are much better served by being able to watch every episode in a row without stopping. There's a lot of important information revealed in this episode, but I know it's important because I've already seen the show. I'm sure that if this was my first viewing, and I didn't immediately watch the next 5 episodes after seeing this one, that I would also be underwhelmed. -

Good essay on Twin Peaks, the third season, and David Lynch (spoilers). http://lareviewofbooks.org/essay/tools-chemicals-david-lynch-retrospective -
Who exactly is the other side? People who are making threats against women? I doubt they are hurt by Anita Sarkessian retweeting some quip.

The Twin Peaks exterior shots near Seattle are worth seeing if you're ever in the area. You can go to Twede's Cafe (location of the Double R) and pay way too much for cherry pie and then drive around the little town where some of the best landscape shots were filmed. I didn't realize this until recently, but Lynch is actually from the PNW. It's the perfect setting for such a weird, terrifying-in-an-unnameable-way show like Twin Peaks. The colors are so unique to this area and they really set the right mood.

To partially answer the question asked about how much of the show's central plot was pre-written (huge spoilers, obviously) I kind of disagree with the notion that Twin Peaks is about modernity coming in and corrupting a sleepy, working class town. I thought the show was a statement on how that darkness was always present. This becomes more apparent when the more mystical parts of the show start dominating the plot. . That makes Cooper this tragically naive character, because he is so easily charmed by what seems like an idyllic town and he lets it get the best of him. Really good first episode, excited for more!

Twin Peaks Rewatch 0: The Pre-Episode

The European pilot isn't really a pilot, it's a TV movie. You'll know if you watched it because it (partially) reveals who killed Laura Palmer at the end.
