Yeah, I certainly would have a hard time respecting any youtuber who took that ethical dodge. It's interesting seeing how ethical policies that used to be dictated by large publications are being fragmented by single-personality media outlets.

I suppose it is kind of a NotAllX problem, but still, it just seems crass and unhelpful to scapegoat a given career for generalized internet misogyny just because a couple of the personalities driving it come from there. And, tangentially, I do think that LPers/video reviewers have a role in the games industry, in just the same way as make-up tips youtubers have a role in the cosmetics industry. They can certainly help to drive people to or away from a given product. I don't think there's any magical difference between games media as represented by a guy with a mic and screen capture software and games media as represented by an established gaming site.

Well, yeah. There are several people whose work I'm aware of who certainly seem to cater to the same noxious dudebro demographic, which isn't too surprising because the conventional wisdom seems to state that that's where the money is in video games. Still, it's painting with a wide brush, and the implications of it make me uncomfortable. I mean, it's not like the beat up Anita Sarkeesian game is any more noble because it's a game -- shitty people are going to be shitty, regardless of their role in the video game industry. I'm much happier when the devs and the LPers seem to be on the same page about being in a mutually beneficial relationship.

I kind of think the whole rule against supporting Patreon's is real fucked up. This post by Brendan Keogh explains why better than I could.

Ah, sorry, I was specifically responding to the quote in Tegan's post. There are a few youtube 'celebrities' who brighten my day a lot, so I don't like seeing them indirectly shit upon just because someone has a beef with JonTron. Maybe that's just the way I read it, in the context of a conflict between JonTron and Tim Schafer. Maybe I'm off-base. I've seen a few bits of seemingly nasty anti-youtuber sentiment popping up in my timeline though.

I don't think that's necessarily a fair description of what youtube games personalities do, but this is probably not the thread to talk about it. There are a lot of people whose charisma, humor, and showmanship make them entertainers in their own right, though, even if they medium through which they choose to express it is playing games for the internet to watch. It doesn't make me comfortable to say that game devs make content and they don't. I mean, playing games and talking about them is basically what Idle Thumbs is. I think it's tremendously dismissive to say that it's inherently less worthwhile than any actual game creation. Crap, I said this wasn't the thread to talk about it then talked about it. I suck

That's your evidence? Vocal criticism = sabotage? I think I might have hurt my eyes rolling them too hard.

That's odd, I haven't followed what they've done with the character of Bane, but wasn't he originally a political prisoner in a fucked up dictator state in the comics? Strange for him to be espousing a pro-fascist stance. Maybe I'm putting too much thought into it though.

It's unfortunate that at this point no genuine criticism can be levied at Zoe, but unfortunately that's the situation that's been constructed, and it's basically entirely the fault of the people harassing her. I can entirely believe that she's an imperfect human being with her own personal issues, but I think that most of those are none of our business. That said, it is troubling to silence any form of harassment claim, but I don't know any of the circumstances. As far as profiting from harassment campaigns, I think that's in the same realm as winning a lawsuit for punitive damages after getting third degree burns to your legs and genitals from a cup of coffee. I don't begrudge anyone their silver lining -- especially when any awareness she has has largely gone towards promoting a free game that builds awareness of depression.

I can't hear "Super Male Vitality" in anything other than the Super Meat Boy announcer voice in my head.

Couldn't we just keep them in some sort of tank of foul goop like in the Matrix? It's much more sciencey, and therefore more objective, and probably a lot closer to the kind of environment they're used to living in. Slap a Mountain Dew logo on it and they won't even notice a difference.

Question: Why would we build a sweet monastery full of LAN machines and then give it to a bunch of douchebags?
-
This is something I wonder a lot: It's a nice thing to believe, but I wonder if it being such a nice thing to believe is why I'm inclined to believe it, rather than it actually being supported by the evidence.

Every time I think about this I get so angry my stomach hurts. It's really fucking hard, even as a total bystander.

I wonder how they'll bend over backwards to defend that as being based on 'ethical principles'.

Actually now that I think about it I remember being disappointed for the exact opposite reason, because I wanted the depressing ending and was stuck with the 'good' one, heh. Though personally I don't buy it as a good ending, because IMO Laura is just another constructed manifestation of Mary like Maria is. -

What's wrong with a bad ending? It seems thematically appropriate. In SH1 my favorite ending was the 'bad' ending. -

You seem to be confused -- this is an unrelated shooting that happened a few days ago, not the Michael Brown shooting. I know, there's a lot of them. Crazy, huh?
