  1. Dark Souls lore is like the songs and poems from Tolkien's novels. You can skip the songs entirely and still fully understand the story and enjoy it. Those who read the poems and songs might learn a little more about the world and the creatures in it, but the actual story doesn't change. Tolkien poem readers will be baffled as to how you enjoyed the book without knowing the entire history of elves. The Dark Souls Lore analyzers will be baffled as to how you enjoyed the game without knowing Gwyn's backstory.
  2. Twin Peaks Rewatch 1: Pilot

Watching this pilot again, I was really unnerved by Jacoby. When he starts to talk about Laura, I noticed he absent mindedly puts his hands under the skirt of the hula lady on his tie. And this reminded me of Norman Bates on Psycho, who starts unconsciously rubbing his inner thigh when talking about his taxidermy My initial impression of him was just another wacky character in a weird town, but this made me think of him as much more insidious person.
  3. Wait, so a bunch of us heard the game title un-bleeped in the podcast, and no-one has said the name in the forums or publicly? This is such a great community of folk. Also Jake, if you were to wear both the hat and moustache at the same time, Nintendo would have shut the stream down, and banned you from Evo.
  4. Tone Control is a Podcast!

Man, this was a really great podcast! I really liked the conversational tone, and the free flowing interview style. Steve, do you write some questions down, or is it all off the cuff? Also, terrific theme music, never change it. The only thing I didn't like was that is was in stereo, I had to change my phone to output mono so I could listen with one headphone while at work, but otherwise,
  5. I also put together a Spelunky Explorers Club compilation. Only with 4 people for watching ease, and I took out the voices, and just played the music, until just one runner remained, then turned up his audio.
  6. Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs

Man this was such a great game. I went in expecting it to be the same game play as the Dark Descent, and was so glad to find out it is way closer to Gone Home with (more) ghosts, and pig-men. I don't want to talk explicitly about the story beats and how it all plays out, but I found it getting under my skin in a way I didn't anticipate. There are a couple of notes that I found, that reminded me, in the best possible way, of 'I have no mouth and I must scream' by Harlan Ellison. Last week I played Outlast and it felt more like a modern horror movie, with cheap jump scares, but the horror of the whole thing faded pretty quickly after I walked away from the keyboard. Where A Machine for Pigs, felt more like a Hitchcock film with it relying more on tension, and a sense of building unease and dread, that caused it to be scary long after I finished it. Erikki: I found the screen tearing in the beginning to be really, really bad, but it got better (or I stopped noticing it) the more I played.
  7. The Last of Us

Well this is a snippet from an apparent upcoming Empire review: “The Last of Us is not just the finest game that Naughty Dog has yet crafted and an easy contender for the best game of this console generation, it may also prove to be gaming’s Citizen Kane moment,” reads the review, “a masterpiece that will be looked back upon favorably for decades.” Also it may cure all disease, and feed the starving children.
  8. My wife and I are about 2 hours into the coop, and it is terrible. I thought it would be like Trine's coop, but because of the 'three person to solve' puzzle design, it means we have to babysit three characters the whole way through the game. We are currently in a section that only allows one character in it at the present moment, so only one of us gets to control a character for large chunks of time, and it is really frustrating and annoying. Earlier we were completely stuck on a puzzle involving mine carts, because the camera refused to follow the character in the mine cart, and instead showed the other two characters. It took about 20 minutes of experimenting and tedious backtracking to try to work it out, but turns out it wasn't a puzzle, it was just terrible camera design. I don't think that I would keep playing if I was playing it single player, just because I haven't found it particularly funny, and the amount of backtracking, and character babysitting you need to to do is tedious.
  9. That is way less impressive than what I had conjured up in my mind...but it is still strangely fascinating.
  10. I really have to know what this Tijuana snake finger pinching box for kids is.
  11. Tex Murphy - Project Fedora Kickstarter

I have never played a Tex Murphy game, but I am intrigued by that Kickstarter Video. I see the previous games are available on GOG.com but I will probably only get around to playing one of them, so which one is the best?
