I demand that journalists/paid bloggers only write about things they have no affection or passion for.

Men cannot be treated identically because the society in which we live is not equal in it's treatment of genders or race. Media cannot truly objectify a man.

A Dedicated Thread For Talking About Star Trek Episodes
feelthedarkness replied to BigJKO's topic in Movies & Television
Here is something for the TRUE sci-fi fan. All of the Star Trek movies without all the yik yak. SHIPS ONLY. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=+Star+Trek+%28ships+only%29 -
i think there are some chests in the bar you can leave things in. you get armor with more artifact holding slots, so hold onto your artifacts, until you get upgrades. also, you'll need anti-radiation artifacts to counteract the other good ones, like passive healing artifacts or anti-bleeding artifacts.

I think this is really important and speaks to the fundamental lack of experience of the complainers. If you're hiring a project lead for a 200 million dollar game, or any position of responsibility are people really expecting them to pick somebody they don't know anything about?

Vulcan Neck Pinches and Other Such Things
feelthedarkness replied to singlespace's topic in Idle Banter
Haha, no way! The James Cawley/Phase II ones are totally charming! (sidebar, I love that his Star Trek fan films are funded by a day job of Elvis Impersonator). How are they going to get away with raising a quarter million dollars to make a Star Trek movie without the wrath of Paramount? -

I can't dignify this stuff with much more than "loser shit." These are the words and ideas of 19 year old dopes with no practical life experience or accomplishment. (Also, anime avatars.(again sorry good AA'd people of IT)) The idiotic idealism of the callow. As if some blogger needs to recuse themselves if they they know the smallest fish of game developers. The current head of the FCC, which will decide our fundamental information access is a cable company lobbyist. The monetary policy in the U.S. has been dictated by a 30 year streak of Goldman Sachs CEOs and COOs. The iron triangle on Pentagon leadership, legislative committees, and weapons manufacturers/lobbyists. But this is where these children are focusing their petulant rage. I don't even understand where this fictionalized version of games journalism comes from? (Obviously people with no actual journalistic experience) It has largely been an expanded PR arm of publishing companies, and a tremendous amount of real life valuable journalism is leveraging closely guarded relationships. Greenwald/Snowden, the unfortunate Manning/Lamo/Poulsen incident, Woodward&Bernstein/Deep Throat.

oops. 1 luv to all IT peeps. You're good folk.

This has been a truly dark zenith in a dark year of gaming bullshit. On top of the cited examples, I really think the anonymity is a tremendous enabler. Also, if I can just dump some bile. It crushes me that actual creators are being hurt by these anime avatar'd losers. Not a one of them creates or contributes anything of value. This isn't the activity of a successful person.

Idle Thumbs 172: http://malaise.ennui/
feelthedarkness replied to Chris's topic in Idle Thumbs Episodes & Streams
Zombies Ate My Neighbors co-op is also great fun because you have one pool of lives, so you can yell at your friends for stinking! (or being bad at the video game) -
I love using my telekinetic spell or abilities (i have like +4 on assorted gear) to push a barrel into some creeps and then either shoot it, or throw a bomb dude onto it.

The story behind this is sort of weird. "terrorist fist jab" is like comically offensive, but it wasn't originally said by any right wing media pundit. So, in the hours after the fist bump that shook the world, the right wing media machine was baffled by it. On some dopey right wing blog a commentator said "Hezbollah fist jab", and the reader comment was eventually removed. But not before a Slate blogger cited it in a story about how the fist bump confused the right wing media world, and linked to the article where the comment was made, but it wasn't expressly stated that the column's author didn't say it. Then that night, Fox News had a panel about what it all meant, and the host (E.D. Hill) said "A fist bump? A pound? [or] A terrorist fist jab?," but never explained where it came from. She lost her show over that. Now, the right constantly traffics in racist innuendo, and Fox has often suggested that the American born president is actually a Kenyan terrorist, and an arguement could be made that E.D. Hill was doing that, but in this ONE case it wasn't an original thought.

here is my 5 minute attempt at Social Justice Barbarian

It's a simple enough google, but 40% of american households have a gun. I feel like that even skews low for unreported gun ownership, or stuff bought at gun shows, which aren't as stringent about paperwork. Which is to say, I understand cops need to be armed, but more importantly, they need to be members of the community in which they operate, not act like an occupying army, and get some understand of a racist power structure.

also, the suggestion she asked for this kind of sexual humiliation because she dared to appear in public really crosses the line.

I think your "modern military shooter" has received a fair amount of criticism. I'm a strong supporter of Spec Ops: The Line, which was a decently budgeted, and almost popular direct criticism of the genre. Progressive critique isn't exactly the salve of the masses.

haha. it's such a weird (shitty) term. okay, i'm a social justice warrior? fighting for social justice? is that an insult? the term is an implicit tautology that there is injustice.

This is nothing about "what she may have done" which I do not care about. I'm not calling these allegations "networking." I'm saying that caring about her alleged behavior and the treatment she received is misogyny. These attacks are based on her gender. No man is treated this way. Take Dov Charney for instance. He has used his privilege and power to force employees to sleep with him. It was bad enough that a lawsuit was raised. Do you think his using his privilege and sex has received the same treatment? He broke actual laws, and barely received a title change.

80% of Jobs are found through networking: http://www.recruitingblogs.com/profiles/blogs/80-of-today-s-jobs-are-landed-through-networking You can consider yourself atypical. Wealthy people tend to know other wealthy people. There is ample data on shrinking class mobility on how this plays out. These people are not realistically attacked for privilege. She is being attacked by what some men call an unfair advantage. I'm saying that attack is inherently misogynistic. and no, it would not be misogyny to not humiliate her for being a woman. The point I'm trying to make is that men are not humiliated for receive the biases they receive. No white man is going to be targeted by a hate group because of his inherent advantage. Zoe was. The world "lets go" natural advantages of being wealthy, male, and white all the time. What is different in this case?
-
Also, as a man, and possibly (likely in certain fields) of a certain class, you enjoy certain inherent privileges that are not accessible to women (or all) developers. Calling out Zoe for this is misogyny. Nobody is going to get humiliated in public for having grown up with upper/middle class and having all their upper/middle class friends pull strings to get them jobs. It's how MOST business is done. Nobody is humiliating men for being "taken more seriously" etc....

Haha, yeah. I feel sort of bad when i see the updates. I think I backed at a tier that lets me put my name in something, and I honestly didn't do it. I'm hoping they can pull it out. they should have got back to EGA style.

this is a new low in a series of endless lows. i really think one step is accountability, and reddit/4chan's culture of total anonymity is a problem. the other step is cultivating communities that won't stand for, and grow them. i know that can't stop the outward facing things like twitter.

or like, if you're a woman trying to see an OBGYN, remember the supreme court overturned that law so some maniac can get up in your face all the way the door of your clinic.
