You may find this talk by Robin Hunicke (ex-ThatGameCompany) useful, at around min 25 she explains the origins of Journey's design pholosophy, a general method for very high-concept game design (from a desired aesthetic to the system of rules or "mechanics"), and presents a three-axis system for categorizing games.
