Decent Cameras - advice?

Recommended Posts

I want to snaggle up a decent little camera, but I don't even know where to start looking. One that takes nice, sharp pictures with proper depth and colour would be nice. My current camera is a £100 jobby that takes forever to take a photograph, and then it looks a bit better than a camera phone job.

It would also be nice if it was some sort of size that wasn't ridiculous to carry around all the time.

Also though I'm very poor so it would be nice if it wasn't enormously expensive.

I await your awesome advice!

EDIT: something like this: http://www.which.co.uk/technology/photography/reviews/digital-cameras/olympus-mju-tough-3000/specifications/product-finder/basket-/page-1/view-10/sort-urlName-ASCENDING/activefilter-6/appliedfilter-UHJpY2UtMTYxMzI3LS0xNTAtMjAw,V2F0ZXJwcm9vZi0xNjEzMjctLVllcw==/low-/high-/appliedglobal-false-false-false/

What would that be like? Waterproof would be an awesome additional feature since there will be lots of water-based action this year... euphemism euphemism euphemism.

Also something with this level of awesome but a fraction of the price would be sweet ass: http://www.sony.co.uk/hub/nex-compact-camera-system/range/nex-5

So like... yeah.

I've been happy with Canon Powershot S95 I bought 9 months ago. Very compact, high quality camera with RAW support etc. It's not the cheapest model available, though, and obviously doesn't compare to real DSLR. I wouldn't throw it into a lake expecting it to work afterwards, either.

The current equivalent, Powershot S100, has GPS which could be nice if you need to know where you have been the whole summer.

Definitely read reviews on dpreview. Personally, I'd recommend Panasonic as a brand. My last few have been theirs, and plenty of friends have bought other models too. All happy with them, and they tend to have decent ergonomics.

Not sure what budget you're on, but at the moment the GH3 is about £450, and is an excellent camera. Much lighter and smaller than a DSLR due to being a micro four thirds camera, but with similar capabilities.

In terms of compacts, I'm a bad person to ask.
