ThunderPeel2001 Posted October 26, 2008 I just picked this up on a whim. (Er... I liked Midtown Madness ) Anyone had a change to play this yet? I'm kind of interested in learning Los Angeles's geography... I'm not sure how accurate it actually is, though!
toblix Posted October 26, 2008 This is from Rockstar, right? What is it, some sort of open world racing game?
ThunderPeel2001 Posted October 26, 2008 Yup. It's a huge chunk of LA rendered using the RAGE engine from GTAIV... but with more of an emphasis of racing (so it's not just the GTAIV handling).
toblix Posted October 26, 2008 Does it have pedestrians?
DanJW Posted October 26, 2008 Does it have pedestrians? You know that question really makes me want another Death Race 2000 game (also known as Carmageddon). I was so disappointed that they took the pedestrian-killing satire out of the movie remake
ThunderPeel2001 Posted October 27, 2008 Yep, it has pedestrians, but you can't kill them. In fact, interaction with the environment is pretty minimal... but! It's still pretty good fun. I actually wish the driving in GTAIV was more like this. You can slide around corners at almost full speed, which is damned enjoyable if you time it right. Also, the loading is much quicker than GTAIV -- there isn't any. Not sure why since they're both using the same system to render a massive city. At the end of each race you zoom up into GoogleMaps view and then seamlessly zoom down into another area of the city and begin your race. Damned impressive. Maybe the rendering of LA is smaller than GTA's Liberty City? It's got the same kind of high quality cut-scenes as GTA, too. Still, it's really good fun and it's designed so that you never get stuck -- there's always something to do (well, a different race to race).
toblix Posted October 27, 2008 Cut-scenes? So, it has a story and stuff? I'm almost starting to be intrigued by this.
ThunderPeel2001 Posted October 27, 2008 The story is kept to a minimum, I think, but yep you work your way up the ranks of street racing, proving how good you are. I admit that I only bought it because of how much I love GTAIV...
Cigol Posted November 1, 2008 Lovefilm sent me this instead of Valkyria Chronicles, which I'm sort of glad for as I went out and bought that instead. I'm a fan of the original Midnight Club (precisely because it was fun just cruising around) and things started well in this new version but where's the damage model? It's a bit lacking after playing Burnout Paradise. The graphics are nice, and in contrast to GTA4 (on the PS3) clean, sharp and smooth. But I have to say I'm a bit bored with the whole Need for Speed, Test Drive Unlimited, Burnout Paradise model, so now there's a Rockstar equivalent (that I think probably started the genre off?) what's it got new to offer... and from my quick play through not much? ThunderPeel2001 Posted November 1, 2008 Yeah, it's pretty old skool. It's really all that different than even Midtown Madness, I suppose, but it's just a slick racer in a realistically mapped city... Although that can work against it. Hitting lamp posts, trees and other cars only to come to a complete standstill can be VERY annoying. In GTA and in the original MM, you could knock down lamp posts and traffic lights... and think going back to a "realistic" model is a bad idea. It's one thing to lose a race because you're lacking in skill, it's another to lose it at the last second because you clipped a tree.
