Tanukitsune Posted August 18, 2008 I've been playing Lost Odyssey and I've finally reached disc 4.... And guess what happened? The disc is damaged! YAY! By the time I get a replacement my vacation will be over! The game was new too! Dammit, it's seems I'm not having much luck gaming-wise lately.... I'm almost tempted to search for a used copy, but I doubt I could find it used anyway...
toblix Posted August 18, 2008 I got a bit of a shock when playing Assassin's Creed today. Suddenly wham, the disc is damaged. I took it out, put it back in and I haven't had any problems since. Unnerving, though.
Tanukitsune Posted August 18, 2008 I've put it it several times, and I've cleaned it even... It actually seems to be scratched even though it's new!
toblix Posted August 18, 2008 Have you tried blowing into the DVD tray? A huge piece of crap may have landed on the lens or something.
Tanukitsune Posted August 18, 2008 Would that work? The other dvds work fine!
toblix Posted August 18, 2008 Would that work? I'd try it, but probably not.
DanJW Posted August 18, 2008 (edited) Things to try: Polishing the DVD with a microfibre cloth (ie something very soft, for instance the cloth that comes with a pair of sunglasses or spectacles. Under no circumstances use a paper-based cloth such as tissue paper, which will only scratch it more). Doing the same as above with a non-caustic cleaner, eg rubbing alchahol Running a lens-cleaner CD through the console Get yourself a Skip Doctor (these things are actually great, and pretty cheap) Or if you are really desperate you can try number 2 above but with toothpaste. Sounds insane but the microcrystals in toothpaste act in a similar way to the special fluid that comes with the Skip Dr, filling in scratches. Make sure the DVD is flat by looking at it side-on. If it is is warped then very gently bend it back, erring on the side of extreme caution. Finally, find the receipt and get a replacement from the shop, safe in the knowledge that any damage caused by the above methods is no longer your problem. Tanukitsune Posted August 18, 2008 I think my most logical option is to try to get a replacement... What sucks it that I was SOOO into the story, and by the time I get back to it, it won't be the same...
Nachimir Posted August 18, 2008 If it has scratches on it, 15 minutes of polishing with brasso or a similar mild abrasive can wear them right down until it works again. I've saved a couple of discs with this before.

ThunderPeel2001 Posted August 19, 2008 Don't forget the Golden Rule: ALWAYS clean with a cloth in straight lines from the center of the disc to the edge. NEVER go along the curve of the disc!
Nachimir Posted August 19, 2008 Ah yes, Thunderpeel speaks truth. Long time since I've needed to fix one
