Erkki Posted March 9, 2008 I'm thinking of getting a domain name, so I would have a good URL for OpenID that I would own myself. And I could also move my blog'n'stuff there. But I've never had to bother with domain names before and the places that sell them always seemed fishy, so... Since many of you have domains for your blogs (and of course the thumbs itself etc.), I thought I'd ask which are the best places to buy them from?
Nachimir Posted March 9, 2008 123-reg.co.uk seem to be the de facto standard when I ask any web professionals in the UK where they register their domains.
Marek Posted March 9, 2008 I've been buying domains through 000domains.com forever. I don't know if they're the best or anything as I have little to compare to, but they've always worked for me. Oh yeah. Don't use GoDaddy.
Thrik Posted March 9, 2008 There's really not much in it between providers other than the financial bottom line. A lot of the well-known providers really overcharge, making you pay for things as minor as name server changes and transfers. I've been using Dreamhost to do domains for years now. It's $10 per year for a .com (£5), and they also throw in free privacy which means your address and whatnot isn't displayed on the public whois database. This is something pretty much all other registrars charge for. Theoretically you could of course just put fake info in, but that can lead to your domain being revoked if someone hates you enough to point it out to domain authorities (FYI!).
