Interesting developer discussion

I just stumbled upon this discussion amongst racing game developers. It struck me as unusual how open they are about how they consider each other's games and stuff. It's a pretty interesting read, maybe.

Saw this on RPS and had to laugh being a PC gamer (one that owns a Logitech Momo and a G25, for what reason I couldn't possibly divulge)

I think racing games are stuck between two groups. On one side is the sports sim, the Forzas and the Gran Turismos and Race Drivers. On the other there’s arcade racers, the MotorStorms, Sega Rallys.
They are in their own little mass marketed bubble!
I wouldn’t call Gran Turismo a racing simulator. It’s more like collecting cars.
...then they come out with this truism.
And now it seems that to have a professional simulator, you have to have this in-car view, or photo mode. Gran Turismo started that.
...until we finally come full circle. I'm not sure what the point of that discussion was at all. Their thoughts are applicable to practically any genre on a console simply because it's mass marketed, streamlined entertainment.

I now have very little interest in reading this discussion at all.

Edit: A newly-hired colleague at my work place used to be a developer for Codemasters, and Gavin Raeburn [see article] was his old boss. Interestingly, my new colleague pointed out that 'Gavin Raeburn' is an anagram of 'vagina burner'... (May read this article after all.)

Yeah the conversation was a little unfocused.

One minute they seemed to be saying that there would be a shift away from graphics now that they were at such a high technical level then they were saying that there is was still so many things they could still do to improve it.

It was convenient to have guys behind some of the best racing games of the last year so none of them could really slag off the others' games. I would liked it if they had just thrown one of the random Devs from Crazy Frog Racer in the mix to watch him flounder.

I recently read an article on ET and another game that failed miserably and it went into some detail with the guys behind the development for them and it was really interesting to see how they fought and lost in their attempts to release a half decent game. I don't know I always find I learn a lot more from mistakes than people gathering to pat each other on the back.
