toblix Posted November 14, 2007 So I've played it for about an hour, and I think my favorite tactic is cloaking and sneaking inside an enemy encampment, and then people start getting shot in the head. And when others come to investigate, I wait until they get real close and... bang! Anyway, it's good fun, but it really does seem like they're actually trying to make the game look as realistic as possible, almost like everything has been modeled after diagrams and reference photos, and the only graphical design is in the interface. Are you playing on a PC? If so, how does it run. My graphics cards a year or so old and frankly my rig isn't up for Crysis yet. But you're liking it?
Jayel Posted November 15, 2007 I've only played the demo so far, and I'm liking it so much I plan to get the full game this week. Just a simple short demo has so much replayability already. I played through it twice just running and gunning, a couple more but without using guns. Then I found that cloak last much longer and more useful if you stay prone, so I played it again using stealth. Stealth is fun, but I wish they had some way of disposing dead bodies. I like enemies AI. What it does differently from other games is that enemies actually get startled when you pull off those superhuman moves. They will stare at you awestruct for a moment, so you can punch them in the face before they regain their composure. I have a 8800gtx running winxp, no slowdowns whatsoever at high settings at 1680x1050. I tried the dx10 features hack, which makes the game look much better (if you can believe it) but it's only playable at 1280x800. You may have to stick with medium settings if your videocard is anything older than a current-gen.
Thrik Posted November 15, 2007 Heh yes, it really is fun once you get into using the different abilities to take out enemies in increasingly elaborate ways. There's really a shitload of potential for different gameplay, but I suspect a lot of people will just stick to the old run and gun technique. The video that plays at the start of the demo is actually quite inspiring, with moves such as using the strength ability to vault over a jeep about to run you over, etc. I decided to try this and ended up landing on the jeep, at which point I panicked and smacked the driver in the head with my fist, inevitably causing a crash. I had a particularly hilarious moment in my last session where I'd used the cloak and some sneaking to get inside an enemy encampment, and thought I'd take some guy out a little fancily. So I pick up a big object (possibly a washing machine), activate strength mode, and chuck it at the bastard. ... Well, not only does it miss, but it then proceeds to rip right through the wall and bring the entire fucking section of the building down. Needless to say, this did my stealth strategy no favours. Until this point I did not realise the buildings themselves were destructible.
Erkki Posted November 15, 2007 I played a bit of the demo yesterday. It seems like a better Far Cry, of which I only played the demo, though. Runs quite nicely on 8800 GTS / Dual Core Opteron 185 (2,6GHz) / 2 GB RAM -- but I haven't looked at the settings yet and just played with the defaults. Nachimir Posted November 15, 2007 As my brother said when he first played Far Cry: "There's something really nice about strolling down a beach shooting people in the face" I'm tempted to build a new gaming desktop, given that I really, really want to play this and I'm going to be modding UTIII too. My present one is creaking along at the very, very bottom of Crysis' system requirements :/
Cigol Posted November 15, 2007 Crysis won't be the game I upgrade my machine for. I enjoyed strolling around in the demo but the gameplay was rather Artificial Intelligence was strategically poor at the best of times. I appreciate the touches like them calling in for backup and so on but I was less impressed with stationary vehicles and your ability to just walk up to said driver and deck him in the head. Things like that shouldn't be in a game like this. With better AI Crysis would be the ultimate FPS in sandbox mode - but as it is I have to dream and continue playing Operation Flashpoint (lamenting the non-FPS control scheme) I enjoyed the sound effects - and the music in particular. I didn't realise it was dynamic (?) but it lends a good sense of drama and elevates even the most irelevant of skirmishes. Well it got my blood pumping when I wandered into an enemy encampment and hid in the huts like a little girl. Nice array of vehicles, physics and impressive graphics.... but would I sacrifice 100fps for all of that if I can get a solid singleplayer experience like Episode Two for example? I dunno, if you're going to push the boundries of hardware you're going to have to give me a reason for it. Operation Flashpoint was the last game to do that for me and Crysis hasn't captured my imagination.
