Playing DS online

Recommended Posts

So, pleease, please bear with me here. I don't really know mcuh about this stuff at all. I was planning on buying a DS lite for my brother next month, and I"m just wondering how online play works on that. Like can he just run a cable from his lite into the usb port and hook up that way? How does the whole wi-fi, wireless thingy work?

Please speak to me as if I am a 4-year old regarding this subject as that's about the extent of my understanding at the moment.

thanks

Wifi is basically the way that local area networking has evolved. Instead of having cables all over the joint, what you instead have are wireless transmitters and receivers that can be put anywhere, effectively eliminating cables. This is great for laptops and stuff, as you can imagine.

The general idea of a conventional wifi network is that you have a standard broadband internet modem (often supplied by your ISP) that plugs into a wireless router with a cable; the wireless router then transmits a wireless signal over a considerable distance (potentially hundreds of metres) that wireless receivers/adapters are able to pick up. Wireless receivers can be either slotted inside a PC, or plugged in via USB.

As far as I'm aware, all the DS does is come with one of these wireless receivers inside it, so a wireless router should be the only thing you need if you haven't already got a wireless network in your home. As long as you're in an area with a local transmitter, you should be able to play online. For most people, this means “buy a wireless router and set it up with your internet modem”, but cities and stuff are starting to have 'hot spots' that anyone from the public can just walk up to and use.

There might be ways of getting the DS online by plugging it directly into the modem or something, but really I don't know as I don't have one. The above is just how wifi in general works.

There isn't. The DS can only connect wirelessly. If you don't have a wireless router (using the 802.11b or 802.11g standard) then you can buy a separate first party accessory that plugs into a USB slot and sends a wireless signal to the DS. I have a router, so I have no idea how well this adapter works, but it IS available. Anyone used one and have some feedback?

Yeah, I've got one, and it works without a hitch. It comes bundled with a USB extension cable and a driver disc. Connect up the thing into the USB slot, it'll autodetect and prompt for a driver disc. Insert the disc, finish installing the drivers, and away you go. Just keep your PC plugged in and turned on with the USB thing in your PC, then choose "Connect via Wi-Fi Adaptor" on your Nintendo DS in your game's Wi-Fi settings. After a few seconds, you'll see a window pop up on your PC asking if you want to allow the DS to use your internet. Accept, and away you go.

It sounds complicated, but it's really quite easy.
