GDC~TV - Hal Barwood talks about Narration in Games

... and makes of fool of himself by saying Emperor's Tomb sucks while forgeting to mention that The Infernal Machine and RTX Red Rock were records in shitty games history.

Yet, the guy still knows what he's talking about and his presentation is the the most interesting one - in term of ideas and concept - provided by the site so far, as it wasn't just a demo.

As a first unpredictable move, the guy sets a disclaimer that helps to understand the limit of his views :

" I like single-player games

I don't play multi-player games

I haven't picked the best examples

I believe the arts teach each others".

Boom, the board is set. He can now spread his cleverness among the people laying before him. And, man, he does it with variety... in fact, he's the only one that quote examples outside of the movie industry; and when he come to movies, I think he avoids being cliché.

I only went :shifty: and :barf: twice during his speech : the first time when he said that a secondary character was the best way to represent a book's underlining trend which doesn't show itself in the form of words but as a diffuse impression.... I wonder why this diffuse impression can't be given by games too :/

The second time was when he seemed to give to scripted events the award for best way to

The rest is pure genius and I really like the comment about dialog being the easiest and most lazy way to convey a story.

Sounds interesting - going to check it out.

Edit : Loved the part about player credentials, some pretty good points were made. Thanks for the link
