Erkki Posted November 11, 2004 The Entertainment & Leisure Software Publishers Association (ELSPA), the UK's collective gaming industry identity, today announced that Rockstar North's Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas has become Britain's fastest-selling game of all time, across all platforms. The "M" rated game has sold one million units in just nine days at retail. Whoa! Well, if I were a pessimist, I'd think: Damn, more than a million people in the UK alone are playing it and I still can't. This was to be expected of course, but that number still dazzles me. What was the previous record? It was set by The Sims 2 recently, wasn't it?
Chris Posted November 11, 2004 Scarily, Halo 2 looks like it will be setting even newer records. At least, until Psychonauts is released. :shifty: :shifty: :shifty:
Intrepid Homoludens Posted November 11, 2004 Microsoft Seeks Video Game Winner With Halo 2 The New York Times online, 11/8/04 (free regist. required to view full article) And just as a splashy Hollywood premiere attracts attention for a film, a video game's first-week sales can be critical to winning shelf space and retailer support. More than 1.5 million people preordered a $50 copy of Halo 2; if all of them pick it up the first few days, the game's opening gross will be $75 million, almost $5 million more than the animated film "The Incredibles" did this weekend. Chris Posted November 11, 2004 I highly doubt all 1.5 million of those people will pick up their preorders, but no matter what the game is going to sell like mad. At my local store, almost all of their preorders have already been sold. When I was there at midnight on Monday, the line had about a hundred people in it. Intrepid Homoludens Posted November 11, 2004 Doesn't matter. Now that the game's received stellar reviews and the infectious buzz is at large worldwide those whores who haven't [yet] followed through on their pre-orders will anyway. After all, you were among the countless hordes and hordes waiting in line. Whore. H2>chris
Thrik Posted November 11, 2004 Halo 2 is ridiculous. I kid you not, three people who go to my college were saying how they've arranged to visit GameStation at midnight to pick it up, and there's probably plenty more like them. This makes me believe that Halo 2 really could have sold the 2.38 million units which are reported to have been sold here.
Erkki Posted November 11, 2004 That Halo 2 is selling so much is indeed scary. How many games that have come out this autumn have made some kind of sales records? The Sims 2 (or was it? I can't remember), Fable, San Andreas, Halo 2, Half-Life 2 very soon now.
Bc9b Posted November 12, 2004 It's like the movie box office, where sales records are made EVERY DAMN WEEKEND. And the attendance records remain untouchable.
