GDC 2011: The Idle Thumbs Conf Grenade: Hold On To Your B.U.T.T.O.N.

I weep for joy! Aren't I glad I stayed up late? YesIam, yesIam! -
I agree, Rodi. I even wrote a short story about that particular Penny Arcade strip. I'm not sure if I have it anymore. . . Edit: I do! It's rather shite, as it was written under insomnia conditions, but if someone wants to read it, I can likely PM it to you. The vomit bucket will be your job, though.

. . .I could post a twenty paragraph rant about how destroying the story of Moby Dick should be a capitol crime. I could rant far and wide about how much I hate Danny Glover. I could tell you how very little I want another dragon movie. Instead, I'm just going to go crawl under my sheets and weep for the death of cinema and literature. /dramatic.

High concept sci-fi is probably my favorite literature genre in existence. I really enjoyed TMOPI for a number of reasons, one of the main ones being that he's probably got one of the more realistic views of "everyone is immortal and can do whatever they want without consequence" that I've seen. Plus super-computer stuff always makes my mind tick over for a considerable period of time after I read it.

The demo has never been updated past the launch day build, as as such, is not indicative of what the actual game is like today.

I smell a night coming where I shoot at dots on the screen and don't hit any of them. Then crash a helicopter into a boat. Oh ArmA, you thing you.

I'm always up for some ArmA2!

I have it on the PC.

Technically not videos, but worth the read. Gods he's lost it. . .to comedy gold! http://mediumlarge.wordpress.com/2011/02/24/cats-quote-charlie-sheen/ http://mediumlarge.wordpress.com/2011/02/28/cats-quote-charlie-sheen-morning-news-edition/

Fair enough. I wasn't fond of the "I've just experienced a magical world, let's go fuck ours over!" but to be honest, I just didn't care. And your point about this versus the actual Alice story is a good point, but not having read the original in a great many years, I just let it go by on its own merits. And I haven't seen Stardust, because I'm a bad person. Suffice to say, I enjoyed it enough to sit through it and ignore the bad points, but I do like it a little less now that YOU'VE RUINED MY WHOLE EXPERIENCE, RODI. Not really, it's still just there, and like most movies I watch will be forgotten in anywhere from a week to a month. Meh.

It's (currently) a single-player story-based physics fighter. The combos in Lugaru were pretty simple and obvious to pull off, and from the Alpha, these seem to be the same way. I have it as a result of pre-ordering NS2, so that was cool of Wolfire. That said, I believe there was talk of some sort of multiplayer.

Like I said, I think I'm starting to get to the point where I enjoy cinema simply for the effect of not experiencing the world for an hour or two. There are few movies where I really have anything bad to say about them, or anything that genuinely annoys me about them, or I thought was bad. (Though there are also few movies where I go "**** THAT WAS AWESOME") I just sort of mildly enjoyed Alice, so if you'd be so kind as to tell me what was wrong with it? I'd heard not-so-good things about it and kept my eye out, but didn't really find anything note worthy. What'd I miss?

I uh, in the course of about 4 evenings, went from four hours of Saint's Row 2, to. . .fuckin' hell, 35. This, you must understand, is a result of co-op. The things that can occur in a less serious GTA-like setting with 'story'-based co-op is ridiculous. Staying up until 4/5 in the morning was the norm for all those days. I've since stopped doing that, but I have a feeling when we pick it back up again, we'll lose ourselves once more. About the story/feel of Saint's Row 2, my friend and I are constantly chuckling at the cutscenes and commenting on how much of an asshole my character is. I'm fairly certain they're not taking themselves to seriously, but even if they are, I just enjoy the game for what it is. That said, watching a dude in a hazmat suit and a bright green and white diving helmet, with a horrible chimneysweep accent, stoned out of his mind is not an experience I will soon forget. I'm not nearly done with Saint's Row 2 yet (maybe 30%) but I have a feeling I'll have more good things to say when I am.

So a billion years late, I just discovered all this in about an hour and a half, see how many bullet points it takes you to understand what movie you need to see. - Willem Dafoe is patient zero! - It's the next logical conclusion of shoving a pole into a person. - I always wondered why I didn't like coffee. - I always knew he was the clever one. - It makes sense that something like that would go in reverse eventually. - I can stomach excessive and realistic gore, but not simply realistic gore. - Why was there only one black dude? - I like movies that end with a conclusion but leave you able to fill in the rest of the story. As opposed to obvious sequels. It's movie night in the Brockenflat household, so; Alice in Wonderland. - One complaint, and one only: Johnny Depp break-dancing. No. - Alan Rickman is now in my top 5 voices. For those who are wondering; 1. Jeremy Irons 2. John Hurt 3. Stephen Fry 4. Richard Wilson 5. Alan Rickman He beats out Martin Sheen by a silk thread. (Oh gods, someone shoot me.) - Excellent VFX. I especially loved the night sky when Alice and Hatter are standing on the balcony. I do love me a good sky. - Despite my thinking at the beginning (I was prepared for the most formulaic movie ever) I quite enjoyed the twists, what there were. - How does anyone not like Johnny Depp as an actor anymore? PotC, Once Upon A Time In Mexico, need I go on? Not my favorite movie, but I enjoyed it. I'm beginning to think I'm willing to watch any movie though, just for the chance to not do anything and escape for an hour or more. Edit: Oh! And the first song in the credits, I quite enjoyed. Re-edit: Oh dear, it seems it's Avril Lavigne. . .I guess liking one won't kill me.

I just. . .man, I really don't care about GTA by this point. While GTA 4 was a spectacular piece of. . .nothing really. The story (and I am by no means the first person to say this) was, "But I'm a good man," protested Niko Bellic as he gunned downed the patrons of a coffee shop. Over and over. I haven't finished it! Maybe it redeems itself. I really have no desire to know. Nor have I played the "Stories" So may GTA 4 experience may be lacking, but by this point, I just feel like GTA is so very, very played out. Am I a bad person?

*Sigh* The commercial for this came on last night in a crowded room and I howled like a maniac for a moment before realizing other human beings were nearby. I then had to explain the connection to Christ Remo, a video games journalist/developer. I then had to explain what video games journalism was. I then went and cried myself to sleep. . . .I was going to edit "Christ Remo" but I think I'll just leave it there.

Sandbox games or lulls in MMO activity are my usual times. Cap'n said Just Cause 2, which is great. That's my usual Bombcast partner. Minecraft Flying around in low-sec in EVE waiting for a target. I've gone back to Dwarf Fortress recently, and that's a big podcast sink for me, since as charming as the music is, it's repetetive.

Mein Thumbcraft—IdleT Dedicated Minecraft Server

Eeeeeee. They're going to catch so much flak for that it's not even funny. Ah well, c'est la vie. -
Fair enough. I sincerely hope they do some sort of tweaking or modification between the console and PC version, but it's sort of a latent hope. The same sort of hope I had as a child that I would get a Porsche for christmas. Ah well.

Ye gods man, why would you ever play an Elder Scrolls game on console? Part of their immense and somewhat ridiculous longevity is the modding community. Hell, Oblivion is a palatable game because of mods, in many aspects. If DLC for Oblivion doesn't concern you (there is no SI affected DLC, it's all for the base game) it's 20 greenbacks on Steam. If you want the DLC (there are some admittedly really nice ones, like The Frostcrag Spire) it's 30, I believe. As generic as Oblivion can be, it does have some spectacular vistas. (Both of these are from Frostcrag.) Gods I love whoever invented draw distance.
-
Granted, Rodi, I don't mean in that way. It's a point leveraged against Oblivion pretty regularly: Trees! So many godsdamned trees. And grass. Green, basically. I really enjoy the shifting visual style that you could get from moment to moment in Morrowind. Things like Aeylid ruins and the Frostpeaks or whatever the mountains were called were very nice, but Oblivion was very same-y. Keep in mind I consider Shivering Isles to be essentially a separate game in which you can import a character from Oblivion. SI was amazing.
-
Sure, will do in a time here, Kingz. I still really enjoy the original Morrowind graphics, and various things are making me consider dumping the mods, but I guess it'll all come down to how my experience is. I tried to get mods that stayed as close to the original feel as possible. And when I say "as good as Oblivion" I mean "not 2001 graphics" because Oblivion didn't look great anyway.
