The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS
SecretAsianMan replied to Henroid's topic in Video Gaming
I think a lot of businesses would benefit from more transparency like that. It helps to cut down on speculation that usually leads to the wrong conclusion. I'm always interested when I see reports about how much a thing costs to produce vs how much money is actually made with the product. -
Briefly touching again on the earlier discussion about rent, I saw this infographic that seems relevant. Hidden behind spoiler in case you don't care. In more recent news, I'm currently at work on my day off. Jobs are fun.

I just finished the second season of Breaking Bad. Things are starting to get pretty interesting. It was kind of weird seeing a whole bunch of stuff happen in that last episode compared to the slow drip the series has been giving me so far.

Idle Thumbs 170: Esophagus Sarcophagus

The one PAX in the last couple years I can't attend and of course Idle Thumbs is going to be there.

Another example is when people like Danielle retweet some of the bullshit sexist stuff that gets tweeted at them. They certainly don't like it and aren't retweeting to show any kind of appreciation. It's more to raise awareness of a topic to the public than a specific comment to the original tweeter.
-
You are not alone in this opinion.
-
I more or less figured that the largest use for it was to say "I like this thing you tweeted". I guess I just needed to be told directly because I'm an old man apparently and I don't understand how to internet. I will say though that using favorites as a shorthand for liking something does work. I admit to getting a thrill when someone favorites one of my tweets; if nothing else it at least tells me they saw it.

RE voices: If I know what their voice sounds like I'll hear that voice in my head when I read their words (such as all of the Thumbs) but otherwise I'll substitute my internal one. I've actually been trying to stop doing that altogether because as Clyde mentioned it's a speed reading trick. It's one of the reasons I chew gum a lot. Supposedly keeping your mouth occupied will help you stop voicing words in your head because your brain thinks your mouth is busy so it won't try to speak.

This is probably a random thought more than anything else but it's about Twitter so here goes. What do people use favorites for? I sort of treat them like bookmarks to keep track of tweets I want to see later or on the rare occasion it actually is a favorite, but I see a lot of other people favorite dozens of tweets a day. Are you really keeping track of that many? Are all these tweets really your favorites? Is it the twitter equivalent of liking a thing on Facebook?

The Business Side of Video (Space) Games EXCLUSIVELY ON IDLE THUMBS

I don't watch very many live streams so the Twitch thing doesn't directly bother me but I understand the sentiment going around. One thing I did see mentioned somewhere is that this might be a potential opportunity for the indie scene to gain ground if they implement their terms of use properly. I would be amused to see indie games being marketed in a way that makes sure to mention they can be streamed without muting their audio. -
Quitter's Club: Don't be ashamed to quit the game.
SecretAsianMan replied to Tanukitsune's topic in Video Gaming
Honestly, this describes almost all open world games to me. Granted I haven't really played many recently (the last new one was probably Infamous or AC2 or Red Dead Redemption or something) but open world games just never really did it for me. I almost never find the world at large to be interesting enough to keep me going past the first few hours and I'm not a big fan of the "go here and do a mission" type of thing. The idea and possibility space intrigue me but I find very few execute it in a way that satisfies me. -
I wasn't gonna mention anyone specific but since you pointed it out... yes it was you. Also I totally understand what you mean about working up to playing the daily. I didn't go near them until I could consistently get to the temple and even then my first few dailies were terrible. I used to do warm up runs before a daily as well but I found that actually ended up hurting my performance on average. For some reason I tend to do better when I jump straight into the daily.

I would say the US has certain... perceptions of what free speech is/isn't and what it should/shouldn't be. As a whole, we tend to not agree on anything apart from "it's good" even though a lot of people don't even have a clear idea what "it" is. As an example, I'm sure there's someone who disagrees with everything I just said.

You see a figure on the side of the road with it's thumb out. You decide to pick this person up because you could use some company on your drive. Only too late do you realize it's actually a robot. HitchBOT

Poetic justice?

I own a home and have that worry. The only problem is I am that idiot. But seriously, sorry to hear all that.

Good help is so hard to find.

I mostly just follow several gaming sites on twitter (like Polygon, IGN, Gamespot, Giant Bomb, RPS, etc). I also have an app on my phone (Appy Gamer if you're curious) that aggregates news from a lot of different places. I can't recommend one site over another because I try to only pay attention to facts and purposely distance myself from reading opinions that may influence my own before I've even formed it. This means I don't read reviews or editorials/opinion pieces very often and get news from whoever has it.

This is also how I feel about it. The same three arguments have been made about video game violence. Obviously child pornography and murder are not the same thing (unless you count certain types of snuff but that's beside the point). The idea that an imaginary thing should be banned because it's based on a real thing people find reprehensible is a concept that seriously bothers me, whatever that thing may be. I'm generally ok with regulating and perhaps in certain cases restricting access to that thing, but not with making it illegal to exist, at least in the imaginary case.

If it would help your narrative, I could start sending you taunting messages and generally acting like a cheesy 80s villain. YOU WILL NEVER DEFEAT MY HIGH SCORE! BWAHAHAHAHAHA!
-
Heh, I actually dislike ghosting. I generally don't aim for a high score on purpose because I find score to be an uninteresting goal. I'll do stuff like rob a vault or get an idol because of the extra challenge involved in doing those things, with a secondary benefit of increasing my score. I will ghost gems if I happen to stay in a level long enough for the ghost to spawn but I almost never wait around long enough to spawn a ghost if I have nothing left to do. When I say bigger risks, I mean stuff like leaping before I look, using lots of bombs/ropes to get things I don't necessarily need, cooking off bombs, whipping arrow traps even though I can trigger them safely, taking almost every alternate path (e.g. the worm, castle, mothership), etc.
-
I don't see a lot of people on my boards after I finish a run mostly because I usually do the challenge as soon as it resets and I don't usually bother looking back at the last one to see if anyone else did it. So it's not that I'm ignoring anyone, I just don't see them pop up. I've been taking bigger risks in dailies lately to spice things up since if I play conservatively I can beat Hell almost every time.

I don't totally agree with you here. I'm not saying I condone comics depicting underage children in sexual situations, but I wouldn't support a ban on them either. If that's not your thing (or if it is), that's fine but I strongly dislike getting rid of something simply because you don't like it. That's such a dangerous thought. Basically I agree that it's a "fucked interpretation".

That happened to me about a month ago. Someone on my Steam friends list who used to play Spelunky all the time but stopped earlier this year was suddenly playing it again. Turned out it was actually his girlfriend playing it.
