  1. I read this too quickly and missed the word "off" so I thought you said she grabbed a kid and ripped in it two. That would be quite shocking indeed.
  2. I Had A Random Thought...

I just encountered this. Hitman Go is on sale for $2 right now, but my $1.09 in Play credit is unusable. Super annoying.
  3. I want him to go to those meetings now just to be a nuisance. Just sit there and loudly hum the theme song he composed or purposely ask dumb questions
  4. I Had A Random Thought...

Is there a Social Justice League? There should be.
  5. The Ethics of Battlefield: Hardline

It had a scene where you take out some large artillery at Saint-Mere-Eglise during D-Day, but I don't think the first game had the actual Normandy landing in it. The scene I'm talking about is this (there's more after the loading screen) I still think it's far more effective than anything I've played in a recent CoD type game.
  6. The Ethics of Battlefield: Hardline

This is a bit of a derailment here, but I miss what I liked about the first Call of Duty game. And I mean the very first one, back when it was set in WWII. I remember the very first mission of the Soviet campaign. It takes place during the Battle of Stalingrad. The game purposely does not give you the chance to obtain a weapon at all during the first part. You have to dodge mortar fire and snipers as you make your way across a battlefield where dozens of other soldiers are being shot all around you. It's a mostly scripted sequence but I still died periodically and the famous quotes (which was a new thing at the time) during each death became much more poignant. I was a completely helpless soldier just trying to survive an intense battle with explosions and bullets flying everywhere. It was very effective in removing the glamour of war. I miss that.
  7. I Had A Random Thought...

This makes me wish I could make a game where one of the classes was Social Justice Warrior.
  8. Feminism

There potentially was an ethical debate that could have happened at one point. But it's grown WAAAAY beyond that. There is a massive difference between an intelligent discussion about press coverage and threatening a woman with death, rape, phone calls, and actual real life visits to her residence. The former is not misogyny. The latter is and it's what's happening now. It's not that she's a woman and should therefore be immune to scrutiny. But that level of scrutiny should be the same as it would be for any man. I very much doubt if the roles were reversed and an angry ex-girlfriend made a blog about her boyfriend in the games industry he would get this level of treatment. If anything the ex probably end up getting what we're seeing now with Zoe.
  9. The threat of Big Dog

Quick update on HitchBot. The hitchhiking robot managed to complete it's journey intact. If you're in Victoria, B.C., there's going to be a celebratory finale event on Thursday, August 21st.
  10. Feminism

For the record, I don't believe the ethics angle either. It strikes me as a smoke screen to cover up attacks on a woman for the apparently heinous crime of being a woman. I am bothered to the extreme when people purposely do horrible things under the guise of good intentions. But as I said earlier the discussion doesn't really go anywhere if all we do is agree with each other. So I'll play the bad guy and ask the shitty question.
  11. Feminism

I'm going to play devil's advocate (because it's how I contribute to discussions like this) and ask "What if this was the case". Would it change your opinion if she did work for a big company? Is her case different because she's indie and will impact a smaller audience? And to be perfectly clear: these are not my opinions. I just feel that a real discussion needs to be looked at from multiple angles. As an aside, it's also part of the reason I hate scored reviews but I won't go into it because it's mostly off topic.
  12. Feminism

When a guy does it, he's a playa. When a girl does it, she's a whore. One is commended, the other reviled. What's the difference? Fuck if I know.
  13. Feminism

I've seen a couple of ideas like that, such as this list here. I particularly like the one about auto-blocking someone if they've been blocked by a number of other people you follow. And yes I'm contradicting my earlier post about how ignoring the problem doesn't make it go away.
  14. Feminism

I agree with that (man I just agree with everything here I guess). Anger is a powerful motivator and can definitely be used in a positive way. I'm fine with people venting some emotions, I'm just advising some caution. I worry about it going from someone saying "I wonder how they would feel if it happened to them" to actually trying it. I don't believe anyone on these forums would do such a thing, but I also know that these forums are not a good representation of the world outside, no matter how much I wish that were the case.
  15. Feminism

This I also agree with. I hate all this as much as anyone here but it disturbs me when the almost exact same words that made us* angry to begin with are used by us with some pronouns replaced. I believe there are times to fight fire with fire but I worry about it when emotions are involved. It's too easy for it to become an internet arms race where the weapon of choice is vile, hurtful sentiment, even if that sentiment is deserved. I fear becoming what I hate. *by "us" I don't mean the Idle forums specifically
  16. Feminism

Despite what I said earlier about it possibly being ineffective, that sounds hilarious.
  17. Feminism

I agree with those thoughts with two caveats. The first is that simply silencing people doesn't do anything to change their minds and in fact would probably drive even further into their own thoughts. It's similar to the "don't feed the trolls" idea in that ignoring them doesn't mean the problem goes away. What really needs to happen is to foster understanding, but I recognize that this is not likely to ever occur. Secondly, I liked the idea that a game had (Titanfall I think?) where they didn't block cheaters from servers, instead they created cheater only servers and anyone who was a known cheater got shunted there so that they were forced to deal with others doing the same shit to them. Except I don't think that would work in this case because it would just create a monster that feeds off of it's own bullshit.
  18. Damn it, but computers have become really complicated

In general, paid ones are almost always going to be better than free, but there are some good free ones out there too. I use a combination of Avast and Microsoft Security Essentials. AV-comparatives has a pretty good summary if you want a detailed breakdown, note that their list does not include Norton.
  19. Left 4 Thumbs - The Homethumbing 2

Yes. This post brought to you by Naturedipes. The diapers for video game babies like me.
  20. Left 4 Thumbs - The Homethumbing 2

I haven't played in a long time so I'm probably not up to the task of Expert, but I'd be willing to try failing it a few times.
  21. Left 4 Thumbs - The Homethumbing 2

Does this still happen frequently? I've been in the mood to play the game lately, specifically a few of the mutations, but I'm unwilling to wade into the potential cesspool that is public servers and playing with bots just isn't interesting.
  22. I Had A Random Thought...

There's a Little League baseball player named Blake Money. He has 3 siblings. One of them is named Cash. His name is Cash Money. And as if that wasn't enough, there's also a 13 year old girl named Mo'Ne Davis who pitched a shutout game with 70 MPH fastballs. I once spent a day in high school working a baseball pitching carnival game for charity. The average speed for the adults was around 55 MPH. This girl is throwing 70.
  23. The Dresden Files

I can only speak for myself, but there's a lot of things I like about it. The series overall is a essentially a hard boiled detective story in which the detective also happens to be a wizard. There are a lot of interesting characters and it has a tone that is serious about it's story and plot but not so serious that it can't recognize the absurdity of the setting. I think what I like the most about the series is that there are rules. Magic exists but it's more like a science than not. The characters can't just do whatever they want and justify it with "magic". It's not about a mystical force, it's about knowledge and the kinds of things that can be done with that knowledge. Plus Harry cracks me up.
  24. Feminism

I'm not a medical professional by any means, but I'm hesitant to apply the label sociopath to internet trolls. They may be jerks because they can hide behind a shield of anonymity, but they might not act that way in real life. There's no way to know for certain, but I think a distinction should be made between people who are incapable of feeling empathy because of an actual condition and people who are just assholes.
  25. Breaking Bad

Still trucking away at Breaking Bad. I watched the third season episode Kafkaesque last night. There was some unexpected stuff in there. I'm also finding Saul to be increasingly amusing which is also a surprise to me. Apparently he's getting a spinoff show? That could be interesting.
